The second goal came soon after, and it was Gamban again who finished. Lee
Jordan dribbled round several men and was fouled to win a free kick. Simon
Marsden’s free kick came back off the bar to Marc Peacock on the byline
and he back-healed it into the path of Gamban, who opened up and lifted it
over the keeper from a tight angle. It became three when man-of-the-match
Ben Jordan knocked a no nonsense clearance down the line and Wilkinson won
several 50/50s with the Birdwell defence and keeper to eventually roll it
into an empty net.
The second half was a story of missed chances and excellent defending and
goalkeeping for both teams. Roan Heeley had a shot tipped over the bar and
Adam Martin performed heroics of his own to keep Boynton’s three goal
advantage. Peacock and Ben Jordan
missed open goals to make it safe, but it didn’t matter in the end as
Boynton’s defence held firm. Boynton now join FC Inter and the winners of
the twice delayed Brinsworth Whitehill v Cotts tie in the semi-finals,
meaning the League will provide three of the four teams in the
semi-finals. Brinsworth Whitehill and Cotts will have to try again next
weekend.
Norton Sportsman stayed second as Brad Bowland netted twice in a narrow
3-2 win over Wadsley Bridge Pheasant. Pheasant struck first when a 50/50
ball fell kindly for Dan Callow to score, but Sportsman got back into the
game before half-time when a cross-field ball found Anthony Holmes who
finished well to equalise. A very scrappy second half followed but
Sportsman got ahead when James Yeardley slotted a well weighted through
ball to Brad Bowland who rounded the keeper and finished. Pheasant came
back strong and they equalised through George Rudd. It looked like a it
was going to finish all square until Justin Circuit found Bowland with a
through ball and he finished well to steal all the points for Sportsman.
Handsworth Everest Inn lost ground after a 4-0 home defeat by relegation
threatened Oughtibridge WM. Everest almost took the lead within 30 seconds
when Sam Marsden hit the post and Marsden, Liam Greenfield, Phil Miskell
and Lee Slingsby all either missed great chances or saw the Oughtibridge
keeper pull off some great saves. Oughtibridge held on and grabbed a first
half lead with a sweeping counter attack that saw Paul Cadman set up Adam
Thomas to finish. The second half saw Matt Harrison break through to force
an unreal save from the Everest keeper, but the ball fell to Jack Ridge,
who smashed home from the edge of the box. The visitors third came when
Harrison again broke through and this time finished well, before the
fourth came when a corner fell for Harry Coy to poke home.
Eckington reclaimed second place with a narrow 2-1 victory over Wadsley
Jack Athletic. A bright start to the game saw Eckington take the lead when
a ball into the box was not dealt with and Joe Harris was on hand to tap
home into an empty net. The lead was soon doubled when a great pass out
wide was fired into the box and turned home by Joe Renshaw. Wadsley grew
into the second half and deservedly pulled a goal back close to the end
when a long throw was flicked on and into the bottom corner by Reece
James, but Eckington held on in the last few minutes to take the points.
Ross Lamkin scored twice on his debut to help Sheffield Sixs keep their
promotion hopes alive with a 5-0 victory at Colley, Sixes got off to a
flying start and piled on the pressure from the off. Within ten minutes
Sixs took the lead when Liam Davies volleyed home from the edge of box.
Colley weathered the storm, but on the stroke of half time Sixs got their
second when Harry Buxton beat three defenders before curling the ball into
the corner from outside the area. Soon after the break, Sixs put the game
to bed when Aaron Buck scored a great solo goal. Colley huffed and puffed,
but it was Sixs that added two more through Ross Lamkin on his debut to
mirror the 5-0 defeat Colley had inflicted on them a month ago.
Just above Sixs is Intake Old Boys after a Jack Heald double helped them
maintain their good form with a 4-2 home win over Southey Social.
Bohemians started well and opened the scoring when James Hastings fired
into the bottom corner from outside the area, but Intake levelled with a
Julian Lawrence strike. Intake then went ahead with a Heald penalty, but
it was Bohemians turn to level with a terrific individual goal from Dan
White to send the teams in level at the break. Another Heald penalty put
Intake back in front before a Reece Treasure strike sealed the points for
Intake.
Chapeltown took the lead in the first half when Morgan Cowell volleyed
from 30 yards in to the bottom corner, but Jubilee retaliated well and
equalised when a good move was finished off by Lewis Smith. Chapeltown
then re-took the lead in the second half when Dave Millen showed great
composure to hit a half volley from the edge of the area. Jubilee then
managed to get another equaliser coming when Alfie Smith produced a great
header from a corner to take a share of the points.

22 FEB –
Fixtures & Referees for MARCH –
Fixtures and Referees for
MARCH are now shown in the Fixtures section of the
website. All home teams MUST make sure that their home pitch is available
on all the dates shown. Please email Keith immediately if your pitch is
not available on a date shown.
Any team that have opponents shown
as "No game yet" should NOT assume that they will have no game on that
date as we have often had to change fixtures at short notice as we try to
get as many games played as possible. There is certain to be some changes
during March due to Sunday Junior Cup ties, but we do not yet know which
date(s) they will be played on.
All home clubs MUST also confirm
the details with your referees and opponents for all dates shown as soon
as they are shown. If you are having to kick-off at a time other than 11
am, you MUST make sure that both your referee, opponents and Keith are
aware. The home clubs should later (the Tuesday before the game) ring the
referee to make sure the referee has got all the details. If a referee
says he cannot do a game listed for them, please notify Keith immediately.
Matches without referees must
still go ahead and, if you have not been allocated a referee by the date
of the game, the two clubs must agree on a stand-in 'referee' between
them. Although Keith will
still be working to gain more referees, because we have a lower number of
referees than in recent season, it is very likely that some games may not
have an official referee allocated to them. If you find one yourself, will
you let Keith know immediately please. |
The other ties, Brinsworth Whitehill v Cotts and Birdwell Rovers v Boynton
Sports, will have to try again next week.
Oaks took advantage of the conditions by pressing Pheasant high up the
pitch and they were soon rewarded when Ireland tapped home from Michael
Peake’s corner. Oaks further reduced the arrears when a Will Carlisle free
kick proved too powerful for the Pheasant keeper, but the game looked to
be swinging Pheasant’s way when former Oaks striker Danny Reet hit their
fourth with the help of a big deflection. Undeterred by that, Oaks
continued to press forward and got their third when Peake played the ball
into Ireland for him to find the bottom corner. More Oaks pressure got its
reward when Pheasant didn’t clear a corner and Elliot Hall picked the ball
up on the edge of the area before giving the keeper no chance with a near
post shot. The only blot on a terrific game came late on when Pheasant’s
Harry Holland landed awkwardly and suffered a dislocated knee.

FEB – DIVISION 2 –
All games off –
All the Division Two games were
postponed due to waterlogged pitches. |
A
minute into the second half and Everest got there third when Greenfield's
pass found Marsden and he turned the defender before blasting into the
goal from just inside the box. Greenfield then raced away from the defence
but dragged his shot wide and a great run from right back Ross Whitehead
saw him take on three defenders, but his shot was well saved by the
Crookes keeper. Crookes put Everest under pressure in the last fifteen
minutes and managed to pull a goal back through John Brelsford, but
Handsworth stayed strong after that. The other CBC Premier games were
postponed due to waterlogged pitches.
|
Michael Vella struck twice in Crookes’s 3-2 victory over a Handsworth
Everest Inn now above them on goal difference only. After the Crookes
keeper had made a good save from
Second place Sheffield South failed in their chance to do the same with
Eckington as their visitors turned the tables on them with an emphatic 6-1
win. In a good start from both teams Sheffield South took the lead through
Tom Davis when a short corner was curled into the top corner. The lead
didn’t last long as Pat Stothard equalised with a cool finish from close
range and just before half time Eckington took the lead when a deep corner
was headed home at the back post by Mitch Walker. After the break
Eckington extended their lead in with a great strike from Joe Renshaw into
the top corner and soon after Harry Bell fired their fourth into the
bottom corner. Ben Renshaw’s header from a corner made it five before
Ethan Flower strike from the edge of the box completed the scoring.
