With both sides tiring, chances in extra time were at a premium, with Shackshaft having the two best efforts, so it went to a penalty shoot-out. Richardson saved Bomber's first penalty, but James Leesley blazed Turf's first over the bar. Richardson then saved Bombers second spot kick, leaving Grady to score to put Turf in front. Bombers then hit a post with their third penalty before Tom Crosby gave Turf a two goal advantage. Bombers finally scored their first at the fourth attempt, but it was too little too late as Danny Wilson stepped up to give Turf an unassailable 3-1 lead.
It stayed like that until the break, but straight from the restart a shock looked on when Bulls scored a second. The ball from the kick off was played down the left and Alan Mowforth ran onto the ball and took a player on before putting a perfect ball into the box for Nick Ash to nod home his second. Oughtibridge hit back almost instantly with a Justin Westoby strike (right) and although Coates again pulled off a string of superb saves, Oughtibridge finally got their equaliser when Adi Tomlin headed home from Townsend’s free kick. Bulls defended resiliently, but the Oughtibridge pressure just kept coming and they took the lead when James Baker played Danny Clinton for him to add the perfect finish. Townsend then made it safe when he fired home a loose ball in the last few minutes.
City Taxis stayed hot on Phoenix’s heels with a 3-0 victory at Norton Oaks B. It took just two minutes for Taxis to take the lead when Wayne Toulson scored his first of the season with a terrific volley from just outside the penalty area and they doubled their advantage just before half time when Jason Hopwood hit a real screamer from twenty yards. Taxis stayed in control in the second half and completed the scoring when Brandon Smith tapped in his third of the season. Hallam FC climbed into the top three with a 7-0 home win over Steelers. David France opened the scoring with a superb strike from outside the box and Michael Kay added a second a few minutes later. That gave Hallam the confidence to play some free flowing football and the effectively had the game won by half time as Joe Howsham, Hothryfa Gadour and Lewis Mitchell goals made it 5-0 at the break. Steelers did better in the second half, but they couldn’t stop Aemad Gadour adding a sixth, before Joe Howsham scored his second in the final minute to take his tally to twenty three for the season. The clash of the bottom two saw Brad Richards score twice as Cobden View claimed their third win of the season, 3-0 at Crookes & District. Cobden took the lead when a Joe Taylor shot was saved and Lee Mansell followed up to put home the rebound and Taylor was involved again when he set up Brad Richards to volley their second. Cobden completed the scoring before the break when Richards snapped up his second from a scramble in the six yard box and although Crookes had lots of possession in the second half, they couldn’t fins a way through a stubborn Cobden defence. The win lifted second bottom Cobden View level on points with the two sides above them. |

DIVISION 1 -
Southey now on their
Todd at the top -
In Division
One, two goals from Todd Guest helped Southey Social to a 4-0 victory
over Ranch to go three points clear at the top. Southey made a good
start and after a succession of corners got their breakthrough. When the
last of the corners was cleared, it was picked up by Dave Wheeler and
when he played it back in to Joel Askham and his chip over the keeper
was perfect for leading scorer John Mellor to volley his thirteenth goal
of the season. Southey continued to dominate, but they couldn’t force a second and Ranch eventually began to get into the game. New signing Ash Hukin went through, but was thwarted by a good save by Southey keeper Andy Guest (right) and soon after he hade to make another great save when he tipped Jakob Burgin’s free kick away from the top corner. Southey were always’s dangerous though and just before the break Ranch conceded a a second when a corner by Askham was met on the volley by Todd Guest to score his fourth of the season. Ranch started the second half well and thought they should have had a penalty when Burgin and keeper Guest collided as Burgin lifted his shot onto the roof of the net. Ranch then switched formations to try to get more men forward and that left them vulnerable at the back and when Todd Guest’s run ended with him feeding the ball to Ash Matthews, his shot was saved, but Guest had continued his run and he tapped the ball into the unguarded net. Despite Southey now dominating the game, Ranch continued to try to get something from the game and they was again foiled by Southey keeper Guest when Mikey Thomas went through one-on-one. Southey always looked likely to add to their score and they got a fourth when Wheeler and Matthews combined to get the ball to Rob Womack and he smashed an unstoppable shot from the edge of the area to confirm a richly deserved victory that put them back on top. Ranch’s day was finally summed up when Joe Whittaker’s late effort came back off the bar and no one could force home the rebound.
DIVISION 2 -
Phoenix flying as they ruin Colley's record
–
Unbeaten Phoenix also opened up a three point gap at the top of Division
Two as a man of the match performance by Dale
Cull made it four direct from a corner and the fifth came from another corner, with Clarke heading his second from Josh Aston’s set piece. Colley’s Curtis Gregory pulled one back with a terrific strike from just outside the penalty area, but any thoughts of an unlikely comeback were extinguished immediately as straight from the kick-off Phoenix went down the pitch and Savage’s cross saw Aston rise highest and plant his header firmly into the top corner. There was still time before the break for Colley’s Chris Fowler to hit his fourteenth goal of the season to make it 6-2 at half time. After that goal glut, the second half was a bit of a non-event and that’s how the score stayed until the end. JUNIOR SUNDAY CUP - Fox & Hounds and Handsworth Turf will have to try again - In the Sunday Junior Cup, both Fox & Hounds Rangers, at home to Longcar Inn, and Handsworth Turf, at home to Red Lion Bombers, had their cup ties postponed, so both will have to try again next weekend. |
12Jan 2015 - Referees for Sunday 18 January now listed - The Referees for Sunday 18 January are now listed in the Fixtures section of the website. Home clubs must contact their respective referees straight away to confirm the details of the game and that the referee is still available to do the game. Please let Keith know if any referee is not available.
11-Jan 2015 – KITLOCKER CUP - Holders go through - Goals from Paul Vickers, Jon Wall and Dan Bathie saw Kitlocker Cup holders Redmires came out on top of their all-CBC Premier quarter final tie at Brinsworth Whitehill. After a goalless first half, Redmires had the benefit of the strong wind and broke the deadlock when a shot by Vickers sneaked through a crowd of players into the net. Brinsworth responded with a shot by Matt Langley that was well saved by the Redmires keeper and it was Redmires that doubled their lead when a corner by Wall flew straight into the net. Brinsworth got back into the game when they were awarded a penalty and Ross Johnson stepped up to beat the keeper, but they couldn’t force an equaliser and with virtually the last kick of the game a quick break saw Mikey Taylor pick out Bathie to confirm Redmires place in the semi finals.
After that it was the Civil back four of Josh Corker, man of the match Carl Ledger, skipper Ben Brown and John Charles that did their best to keep Angel at bay. Chris Towey and Gareth Simons both had chances to level for Angel and Sam Comer had one effort cleared off the line. Dave Kippax went close and Michael Towey had two chances well saved by the Civil keeper, but the worst miss came from Hague who somehow headed over from six yards after Mark Coggins’ long throw was flicked on by Kippax. Action from the game is below (pictures by Mick Moat).
Bulls Head climbed out of the bottom three as they had eight different scorers in a 10-2 victory over The Park. Rob Dawber tapped home Bulls Head’s first following a corner and it was soon followed by a Matt Evans header from a John Kentzer cross. Ryan Damms pulled one back for The Park, but a second from Evans and one from Adam Sui put Bulls Head back in control. The second half began with two Mark Bryant goals and a seventh came from a Sam Dean tap in from another Kentzer cross. Damms grabbed a second for The Park, but Bulls Head shrugged that off with a Nick Ash strike from twenty five yards to make it eight. Chris Peel found the bottom corner for number nine and Kentzer rounded things off with a solo goal for number ten. DIVISION 1 - Danny boy keeps Turf on top, but Southey stay with them, while some old Ranch hands shock Norton - 18 year old Danny Wilson hit a hat-trick as Handsworth Turf stayed top of Division One with a 7-0 victory over Dam House Bar. Wilson and Ben Shackshaft gave Turf a two goal half time lead and with the wind at their backs in the second half their was no stopping Turf. Wilson completed his hat-trick and Mario Esposito netted on his return from injury, while Craig Cansdale and Ollie Grady netted their others. Southey Social stayed level on points as an own goal gave them a narrow win over an Aston Swallownest that lost two players after they clashed heads with each other. Southey had the benefit of the strong wind in the first half, but they struggled to take advantage. Chris Roberts fired just wide and they finally broke the deadlock when Ash Matthews beat a defender before drilling it past the Aston keeper. Aston continued to defend well and had one or two breaks of their own, but Aston’s game plan was plunged into disarray when the Aston strikers Danny Wilcox and David Sills clashed heads with each other and were taken to hospital. Aston reshuffled and they levelled soon after the break when a ball over the top was flicked on by Conner Payne and Lee Anthony fired home. Southey quickly responded and a quick break saw Danny Lindley’ cross turned into his own net by an Aston defender for what turned out to be the winner.
A Carl Andrews double saw The Pheasant pip Ecclesfield Players Lounge 5-4. Danny Turner gave Ecclesfield the lead, but a neat finish by Dylan Parrott and a Josh Statham volley put The Pheasant ahead. Turner then hit his second to draw Ecclesfield level and The Pheasant keeper made a good save to stop Turner from completing his hat-trick. The Pheasant keeper also made good saves to stop Joe Knight and Craig Senior putting Ecclesfield ahead, but it was The Peasant that struck next when quick goals by Lewis Fothergill and Carl Andrews made it 4-2 to them by half time. The second half started with Dylan Parrott missing a penalty for The Pheasant and instead a penalty by Senior reduced the arrears for Ecclesfield. Andrews grabbed his second to give The Pheasant some breathing space, but Knight again pulled one back for Ecclesfield. That gave The Pheasant an uncomfortable last five minutes, but they just managed to hold on.
City Taxis stayed level on points with Phoenix, but narrowed the goal difference gap to just two as new signing Nick Garvey hit five goals in a 8-1 victory at Steelers. Although Matt Wraith pulled one back for Steelers Garvey’s first four together with two from Flo Fadiga gave Taxis a 6-1 half time lead and they continued to dominate after the break with Garvey’s fifth and one for Richard Ellin. Colley stayed third as Matt Meaney and Chris Fowler both scored twice as they ended Chapeltown RBL's unbeaten away record with a 4-3 victory over them. Joe Moorhouse gave Chapeltown the lead midway through the first half, but ten minutes later a Richie Whitworth corner was headed home by Meaney to bring Colley level. Colley went ahead when Meaney crossed the ball across the six yard box to give Fowler an easy tap in and with half time approaching a superb through ball by Meaney allowed Fowler to grab his second from just inside the area. Colley grabbed a fourth after the break when Brendan Drew cut the ball back for Meaney to hammer in his second, but Chapeltown got themselves back into it when Liam Gibson smashed the ball home from a tight angle. Moorhouse then grabbed his second when he cut in from the left and found the far corner, but despite giving the home side an uncomfortable last few minutes, Colley held on to maintain their perfect home record and their eighth consecutive win. Hallam kept up the pressure on the top three as Joe Howsham took his season's tally to twenty one with his sixth hat-trick in their 6-1 victory over Sharrow Vale. Howsham set the ball rolling when he finished of a good move in the first minute. This set the tone for the first half and some more delightful football finished with Lewis Fothergill heading Hallam’s second. David Primhak pulled one back for Sharrow five minutes before the break, but there was still time for Fothergill to hit his second for Hallam. Hallam stayed in control in the second half and Hothryfa Gadour tapped home their fourth and Howsham scored his second with a calm finish. After Will Deniff had been brought down in the area, Howsham took the penalty and although the keeper saved his spot kick, Howsham was first to the rebound to complete his hat-trick and the scoring. Paul Adams and Steve Morris both hit doubles in Laycock Sports 5-1 victory over Cobden View. Adams opened the scoring, but Paul Griffiths through ball allowed Joe Taylor to level before the break. Laycocks had the wind behind them in the second half and went back in front with a beauty from Steve Morris and they increased their lead with a penaly by Scott Lyons. A non-stop performance by Adams made him the Man of the match and he grabbed his second before Lyons completed the scoring with his second. JUNIOR SUNDAY CUP - Intake go out despite a Hobson double - Despite a Russ Hobson double and one from Matt Hunter, Intake Old Boys went out of the Sunday Junior Cup with a 5-3 defeat at Upton Wrangbrook. |
CBC PREMIER - All CBC Premier games postponed - The rain and freezing conditions put paid to all the CBC Premier games. DIVISION 1 - Turf go top in style - Waterlogged pitches and freezing conditions meant just one game was played in Division One, but that game saw two 18 year olds, Danny Wilson and Ollie Grady, both score twice as Handsworth Turf went top of Division One with an 8-0 victory at Ranch. Wilson’s were his first goals for the club, while Grady’s brace capped a terrific performance in the centre of midfield. Ben Shackshaft hit his ninth goal of the season while Craig Cansdale, Keiran Gallagher and James Leesley all found the net for the first time this season. As Turf ran riot against a Ranch outfit missing a number of key players. DIVISION 2 - City , Taxis, Hallam and Chapeltown step up their title bids, while Laycock surprise Fox – Division Two managed four games, including City Taxis’ 5-2 victory over Crookes & District 5-2 that put them level on points with leaders Phoenix. Scott Westney’s thirty five yard screamer to put Taxis in front was cancelled out by an equally good long range strike by Crookes’ Rob Acheson, but Nick Young and Jason Hopwood strikes had Taxis back in charge before half time. Crookes got back into it at the start of the second half when Jonnie Butler’s cannonball shot went straight through the home keeper, but Taxis made certain with a Brandon Smith strike and Jordan Marshall’s twelfth of the season. Addie Gadour netted a hat-trick as the unbeaten Hallam FC stepped up their title bid with an 8-1 victory over Cobden View. Lewis Mitchell put Hallam ahead with a goal that almost needed goal-line technology to confirm (first picture below), before Gadour netted his first two. Matt Hunter then powered home a header to make it 4-0 at the break. Gadour completed his hat-trick at the start of the second half with a spectacular overhead kick (second picture below), before the League’s leading scorer Joe Howsham took his season’s tally to eighteen with two his first is the third picture below), the second being a spectacular forty yard thunderbolt. Mitchell scored his second before Ben Bell’s cross allowed Joe Taylor to net a last minute consolation for Cobden. More action is below - pictures by Mick Moat.
Sam Walch also hit three as Chapeltown RBL extended their unbeaten away record with a 5-0 victory at Steelers. RBL got off to the perfect start when Gary Bacon played a one two with Joe Morrhouse from a short corner for Bacon to fire low beyond the keeper. That’s how it stayed until just past the hour mark when sub Sam Walch made an immediate impact with an unstoppable shot into the top corner. Paul Milner then set up the third for Tom Wright, before Walch hit his second from just outside the area. Walch completed his hat-trick when he was sent clear to poke the ball past the keeper to complete the victory that keeps RBL in the promotion hunt. Steve Morris scored twice as Laycock Sports pipped Fox & Hounds Rangers 5-4 in a real topsy-turvy game. Scott Lyons, man of the match Luke Glaves and Paul Adams gave Laycocks a three goal half time lead and it looked as if they were on their way to a comfortable victory when Morris hit his to make it 4-0. Fox had other ideas though and they quickly puleed two back with Dan Hartley and Russell Dutton strikes, and they should have had a third when they missed a penalty. They continued to press though and after Adam Skelton pulled a third back, Ash Peet grabbed his eighth of the season to bring them level. Fox looked certain to go on to win it as they pressed for the goal that would keep them in the promotion hunt, but a quick break allowed Morris to grab the winner for Laycocks instead. |
