MARCH – CBC PREMIER –
Top two share a thriller, and Pitt strikes lift
Dronfield –
Leaders Joker Wickersley Youth’s 11 game winning run was brought to an end
by second place Norton Sportsman and Joker needed two Ben Thornton
(pictured right) strikes to earn a point in a 3-3 draw. Sportsman started
well with Danny Rogers scoring in a scrappy goal mouth scramble to give
them the lead. Joker replied and after Sportsman keeper Jensen Beever had
brilliantly denied a Joe Austin once he couldn’t stop Austin from
levelling things from Brad Morton’s cross. Sportsman’s Matty Ord was
causing Joker all sorts of problems and when he broke away and was brought
down in the penalty box, allowing Brad Bowland to put Sportsman back in
front from the penalty spot. It took Joker just two minutes to hit back
again when an Austin ball into area found Adam Daughtrey who showed great
skill on the turn to provide a cross for Thornton to score.
Joker started the second half on top and deservedly went in front when a
Kallum Nix lob into the area allowed Thornton to hit his second. To make
matters worse for Sportsman, Ord was red carded for his protests about the
goal, but they dug in and levelled when a diagonal ball from James Archer
was headed home by skipper Josh Gibson. Joker almost won it at the end,
but two more terrific saves by Beever kept the scores level.
That
allowed both Stannington Village and Royal Earl to gain ground on the top
two, with Jon Wall netting twice in Stannington’s 4-1 victory over
Handsworth Everest Inn. Stannington took just 12 seconds to take the lead
when Jon Wall (pictured left) capitalised on Carl Bowler’s bad back pass
and side-footed in the far corner. Everest equalised
when Ryan Goodinson crossed for Ben Shackshaft to volley home from 12
yards and they almost took the lead when Sam Marsden raced away from the
defence, but after rounding the keeper he hit it wide from an acute angle.
Shackshaft thought he had a second, but he was ruled narrowly offside and
instead it was Stannington that lead at half-time after Jack Haslam
glanced home a Wall free-kick. After the break Stannington increased their
lead when Wall sent Shaun Flynn through to beat the keeper and the scoring
was completed when Flynn was brought down in the area and Wall scored from
the spot
Alex Rippon (pictured right) hit a hat-trick in Earl’s 6-1 victory over
Oughtibridge WM. A Matt Cowen own goal gave Earl the lead, but
Oughtibridge quickly levelled with a great turn and snapshot from Matt
Harrison. After that it was one-way traffic, especially after Oughtibridge
was temporarily reduced to 10 men. As well as Rippon’s three, Joe Pearson
and a 25 yard half volley from Earl legend Ryan Hindley completed the
scoring.
He
was outscored though by AFC Dronfield’s Tim Pitt (pictured left) as he hit
four in their 6-1 victory over a, Civil Sports they leapfrogged in the
table. Gary Eades gave Civil the lead, but they were second best after
that. James Taylor levelled and Pitt netted his first to give Dronfield a
half-time lead. Sm Porter increased the lead after the break before Pitt
netted three more.
Crookes
added to Wadsley Bridge Pheasant's relegation woes as two Max Rhodes
(pictured right) strikes helped Crookes to a 4-1 victory over them.
Crookes started brighter and Ehsan Mohammed gave them a deserved half-time
lead. Pheasant had ended the half stronger and missed chances to equalise,
but they got their equaliser soon after the break through Carlton Carty.
Crookes are in their best form of the season though and re-took the lead
with a Pete Smith strike and two clinical finishes by Rhodes saw Crookes
safely home.

MARCH – DIVISION 1 –
Cotts hold Inter as Boynton cut the lead to 2
points –
Despite goalkeeper Thomas Brightmore (pictured left) scoring with a 60
yard free kick, leaders FC Inter dropped points for a second consecutive
league game after being held by a 10 man Cotts. Sam Read’s opener for
Inter was cancelled out by Callum Shaw, but the game looked to be going
Inter’s way when Cotts was reduced to 10 men and Brightmore gave Inter a
half-time lead. Cotts dug in and they deservedly took a point with a
Harvey Smythe goal to end Inter’s perfect away record.
That
result allowed Boynton Sports to cut the gap at the top to just two points
with a 2-1 victory over an unlucky Shaffield Sixs. Ethan Wilkinson twice
took advantage of defensive errors to give Boynton a two goal lead, but
after that it was Sixs that dominated and Ross Lamkin deservedly pulled
one back and only a terrific display by Boynton keeper Adam Martin
(pictured right) stopped Sixs from taking at least a point.
Despite
a Jordan Lonchar hat-trick, third place Sheffield South couldn’t keep pace
as they let a three goal lead slip to draw 4-4 with relegation threatened
Southey Social. Lonchar’s treble and one from John Rossiter had seemingly
put South in command, but two from Jack Appleyard (pictured left) and one
each from Jordan Livett and Brandon Whitfield gave Southey a surprise
share of the spoils.
Eckington kept their promotion hopes alive with a 2-0 victory at
Brinsworth Phoenix. After a goalless first half, there had still been no
clear chances until a great cross from Eathan Flower was converted by Joe
Renshaw. Eckington then hit the bar and post before Alister Haydock added
a second ten minutes from time.
Colley
came from two down to beat Intake Old Boys 4-3 and take a big step to
safety. Although Colley started brightly two Sam Morley strikes gave
Intake the lead. Chris Belshaw (pictured right) hooked into the corner to
reduce the deficit, but Intake went on the attack and Reece Treasure
restored their two goal lead before half-time. Colley got themselves back
in the game again when Belshaw grabbed his second within 30 seconds of the
start of the second half and after that it was all Colley. Billy Thorley
smashed in to level the scores and ten minutes from time a cross into the
box saw Christopher Onjia bundle home to give Colley the points.
New
Bohemians climbed out of the bottom three after two Zach Burns (pictured
left) goals helped them to a 4-2 victory at Wadsley Jack Athletic.
Bohemians took the lead when good work by Tom Burbeary was finished off by
Burns, but Leon Dearns and Lee Cookland strikes either side of half-time
put Wadsley in front. Bohemians levelled when Burbeary was fouled in the
area and Burns scored from the spot and they went in front with a
tremendous strike from their veteran Jono Cooper. Late on Wadsley hit the
bar when it was perhaps easier to score, before Sam Smith scrambled home a
fourth for Bohemians.

MARCH – DIVISION 2 –
Phillips is electric for Legion and Magpies
arrested by Sherritt –
Division Two has new leaders after two Jed
Phillips (pictured right) strikes helped Chapeltown RBL come from two down
to beat title rivals Brinsworth Whitehill 3-2 to take over at the top.
After an uneventful half an hour, Brinsworth took the lead when Brad
Carroll fired home from Matt Claxton’s free kick. Claxton was again the
provider when his flicked header was tapped home by Drew Houghton to give
Brinsworth a two goal lead at the break.
Legion made a double change at half-time with Joe Long and Adam Todd
coming on to change their formation and it soon paid dividends when Joe
Long hit an unstoppable volley from the edge of the area to reduce the
deficit. Legion played with much more intent, with Ash Gray and Harley
Wilson getting on the ball much more, but Brinsworth were dangerous on the
break and a good it needed a good save by James Birch to stop them
restoring their two goal lead. Legion’s Ben Stringer was causing problems
down the left and his deep cross was met with a thunderous header from
Phillips to equalise late on, but Legion hadn’t finished there though and
in injury time Long whipped in another wicked cross for Phillips to climb
the highest again and find the top corner to send Legion top of the league
with just three games remaining.
Mosborough
Reds four match losing run ended as two Ash Sherritt (pictured left)
strikes helped them to a 4-1 victory over Beighton Magpies. Jack Turner
saw the Magpies keeper off his line and chipped it in to put Reds in
front, but just two minutes later a corner was met by Danny King to
equalise. Reds regained the lead minute before half time when Alix Sorsby
hit a wonder strike from the halfway line into the bottom corner and they
secured the points with two from Sherritt in the second half. |
26 MARCH –
Fixtures & Referees for APRIL & MAY –
Fixtures and Referees for
APRIL & MAY are now shown in the Fixtures section of the
website. All home teams MUST make sure that their home pitch is available
on all the dates shown. Please email Keith immediately if your pitch is
not available on a date shown. Teams shown as having midweek games are
shown mostly as the date on Thurdays, but if their pitch is not available
on a Thursday, they should try to organise the game on a different day of
the same week.
Any team that have opponents shown
as "No game yet" should NOT assume that they will have no game on that
date as we have often had to change fixtures at short notice as we try to
get as many games played as possible. There is certain to be some changes
during March due to Sunday Junior Cup ties, but we do not yet know which
date(s) they will be played on.
All home clubs MUST also confirm
the details with your referees and opponents for all dates shown as soon
as they are shown. If you are having to kick-off at a time other than 11
am, you MUST make sure that both your referee, opponents and Keith are
aware. The home clubs should later (the Tuesday before the game) ring the
referee to make sure the referee has got all the details. If a referee
says he cannot do a game listed for them, please notify Keith immediately.
Matches without referees must
still go ahead and, if you have not been allocated a referee by the date
of the game, the two clubs must agree on a stand-in 'referee' between
them. Although Keith will
still be working to gain more referees, because we have a lower number of
referees than in recent season, it is very likely that some games may not
have an official referee allocated to them. If you find one yourself, will
you let Keith know immediately please. 23 MARCH – Reminder to clubs about British Summertime and the Sheffield Half Marathon on Sunday 27 March – A reminder to everyone involved that Sunday 27 March will see the clocks go forward an hour due to British Summertime and there will be many road closures from the city centre up Ecclesall Road through to Dore due to The Sheffield Half Marathon. |

MARCH – SUNDAY JUNIOR CUP –
Inter the Final –
The first of the Sunday Junior Cup semi-finals saw
two Lewis Whitaker (pictured right) goals help our Division One leaders FC
Inter overcome the Imperial League’s Woodman FC 4-1 at Warminster Road. Both
teams gave everything, with Woodman coming out of the blocks early on, but
Inter stayed calm and took the lead when they were awarded a penalty,
confidently put away by Whitaker. Whitaker struck again with a free kick
that gave the keeper no chance and the tie was as good as over when the
ever reliable Sam Read scored for the fifth consecutive round to make it
3-0 at the break. Inter controlled the second half and an own goal
extended their lead further, but Woodman score a deserved consolation late
on. It means that the final scheduled for Doncaster Rovers on 24 April
will be an all-Blades Super Draw affair as Inter will meet the winners of the Boynton Sports v
Brinsworth Whitehill semi-final due to be played on 3 April.

MARCH – CBC PREMIER –
Adam’s the apple of Joker’s eye, but Stannington
get Ripped –
Adam Daughtrey (pictured left) hit a hat-trick in Joker Wickersley Youth’s
5-2 victory over AFC Dronfield and they now look strong favourites to take
the title for the first time. After 30 minutes of stalemate it was
Dronfield that shook the leaders by taking the lead with a Tim Pitt
strike, but just three minutes later Daughtrey picked up a loose ball in
the box to score to bring the game level. Joker then took the lead as a
Joe Austin cross found an unmarked Shaun Edwards to power a header into
the roof of the net. Dronfield suffered a further blow when centre half
Aaron Ellis had to give way after suffering an accidental head injury.
The second half saw Liam O’Brien go close for Joker with a volley before a
Joe Austin shot was well saved by the Dronfield keeper. Their pressure
paid off when Kris Lee-Green provided an accurate cross for Daughtrey to
slide in for his second and he completed his hat-trick when Joker was
awarded a penalty. O’Brien netted number five when he dribbled through the
Dronfield defence before hitting an unstoppable shot into top corner. Josh
Sell netted a deserved second for Dronfield, but the result was never in
doubt and it put Joker nine points clear at the top.
Second
place Norton Sportsman lost ground when they were held to a 2-2 draw by
Handsworth Everest Inn. It was Handsworth that took the early initiative
and after Liam Greenfield had hit the bar with a 20 yard shot he gave them
the lead when he curled a shot into the top corner. Handsworth remained in
control for the majority of the first half and Greenfield had two chances
to increase their lead after the break, but began to get a foothold in the
game and Anthony Holmes beat the offside trap to equalise. Only minutes
later Holmes beat the offside trap again to put Sportsman ahead, but
Handsworth didn’t give up and after Carl Bowler had headed just wide,
they equalised when Ryan Goodinson
chipped the ball into the box and Joe France chested the ball back into
the path of Greenfield, who side-footed home from 10 yards. Special praise
went to Ben Shackshaft
(pictured right), who is normally a striker, but had an excellent
game in goal with no recognised keeper available.
Stannington
Village’s title hopes took a blow as two Alex Rippon (pictured left)
strikes saw title rivals Royal Earl come from behind to beat them.
Stannington started brightly and took the lead when a right wing cross saw
Jon Wall apply the finish with the help of a slight deflection. Earl hit
back and levelled when Johnathan Williams beat the keeper and they took
the lead with Rippon’s first. Rippon increased Earl’s lead ten minutes
into the second half with a cushioned header and although both Arnie
Grayson and Lee Johnstone hit the post for Stannington, Earl hung on to
the points.
At
the other end of the table, two Charlie Cope (pictured right) strikes
helped Oughtibridge WM move further away from danger with a 4-1 victory
over the already relegated Norton Oaks. In a fairly even first half
Oughtibridge broke the deadlock just before half time with a lovely finish
from Luke Needham, but the second half saw Oaks level when Elliott Hall
sent the ball high up the pitch and an under pressure defender headed it
up and behind for Michael Peake to latch on to and lob the keeper from
outside the area. Oughtibridge responded straight away and Jordan Holland
broke before crossing for Wilker Sousa to finish at the back post. Holland
was again the provider with a terrific cross for Cope to finish with a
neat header and Cope completed the scoring with a finish from the edge of
the area.
Two Connor Platts strikes helped give Wadsley Bridge Pheasant a 3-0
victory at Civil Service that gives Pheasant more hope of avoiding the
drop and drags Civil into the relegation reckoning. Pheasant started
brightly and Platts early strike put them ahead and an Ash Simpson strike
doubled their lead. Platts scored his second to put Pheasant in control at
the break. Even though the second half was a very scrappy affair, Pheasant
remained in control and hold on to take a vital three points.

MARCH – DIVISION 1 –
Boynton, Sixs and South all close up on the leaders –
With Division One leaders FC Inter in County Cup action three of the teams
behind them took advantage to make up ground on them. Jake Gamban
(pictured right) scored twice as second place Boynton Sports had the
biggest win, 7-0 over Brinsworth Phoenix. With man-of-the-match Kurt
Cockburn pulling the strings, the result was never in doubt and other
goals from Marc Peacock, Lee Jordan, Roan Heeley, Nathan Davies and Curtis
Priday came at regular intervals. The victory put Boynton just four points
behind the leaders.
Third place Sheffield South also won comfortably, 4-0 at Intake Old Boys.
Chris Samuels gave them a first half lead and they completed the win with
second half strikes from Jordan Lonchar, Najib Arrian and Ben Bertram.
Sheffield Sixs victory though was anything but simple as they came from
behind three times before winning a real thriller at New Bohemians 6-5
with two very late goals. Bohemians took the lead when James Hastings hit
his free kick into top corner and Hastings then brilliantly got his second
when he cut in from the left before finding the top corner again.
Sixs got one back when Harry Buxton smashed home inside the box, but
Bohemians restored their two goal advantage with Tom Burbeary finishing
low into the bottom corner. Sixs again pulled one back when Ross Lamkin
headed in George Utley's corner before half time, but Bohemians again
restored the two goal advantage after the break when a brilliant pass from
Jono Cooper allowed Sam Brown to slip the ball past the keeper. Sixs hit
back and levelled with Liam Davies and Luke Allison strikes, but they went
behind again when Zach Burns converted a penalty. For the second week
running Bohemians were beaten 6-5 by two late goals after both Danny
Barnsley and Davies with his second netted in injury time.
Another
late comeback saw Southey Social net three goals in the last ten minutes
to beat Wadsley Jack Athletic 3-2 and lift themselves out of the bottom
three. Two first half George Scott goals looked to be giving Wadsley a
rare victory, but Todd Guest pulled one back with just ten minutes
remaining, before a Kieran Hopkinson strike and a special free kick into
the top corner from Jordan Livett (pictured left) turned the game on its
head.
Cotts
also improved their chances of avoiding the drop with a 2-1 victory at a
Colley side beginning to look nervously over their shoulders. Cotts went
two up in first half with a Chris Salt (pictured right) header and an Alex
Calton shot into the roof of the net. Colley rallied in second half and
growing pressure resulted in Chris Belshaw heading in with 25 minutes
remaining. Colley’s momentum was lost with a ten minute delay in play due
to a Colley player suffering a badly broken nose and Cotts held on for a
valuable three points.

MARCH – DIVISION 2 –
Stalemate for Lion and RBL, but Sheaf win at Jubilee –
Division Two leaders Red Lion
were
held to a goalless draw by second place Chapeltown RBL and after beating
their hosts 5-1 the previous week, this time Chapeltown were left to rue
missed chances. Legion started brightly with stand in skipper Josh Savage
working hard in midfield, but chances were made and missed. Lion also had
their moments, but Legion’s man of the match Joe Long (pictured left) had
a composed game at the back and together with keeper James Birch earning
his first clean sheet for his new club the Legion defence held firm.
Chapeltown almost won it when Josh Savage sent Joe Moorhouse through late
on but his effort was saved by the Lion keeper. Legion will hope they have
their shooting boots back on when they face their other main title rivals
Brinsworth Whitehill next week at St Georges Park.
Sheaf House came from behind to inflict just a second home defeat, 3-1, on
hosts Jubilee Rangers. Jubilee Rangers started the game extremely well
coming out of the gates quickly and they took the lead instantly with Josh
Jackson heading the ball home from a great Jack Shaw corner. Jubilee then
controlled the game for the majority of the first half until Henry Bagshaw
equalised for Sheaf. The second half was scrappy and Sheaf House took
advantage of that to go in front with a Dan Lockwood strike and with
Jubilee pushing more players forward in search of an equaliser, Sheaf hit
them on the break to secure victory with a Taku Padiwa strike. |

MARCH – SUNDAY SENIOR CUP –
Pheasant put on a Ruddy good show –
Wadsley Bridge Pheasant became only the second Blades Super Draw League
side to reach the final of the Sunday Senior Cup after a George Rudd
(pictured right) strike gave them a 1-0 victory over Mexborough’s Dog
Daisy United. Pheasant lost in the semi-finals the last time the
competition was played so they were determined to go one better this time.
The game started brightly and Dog Daisy had a few half chances, but a
knock-on and a flick-on by Rudd gave Pheasant the lead. Daisy hit back and
started to dominate and have chances to score but they couldn’t beat
Pheasant keeper Joel Statham.
The second half was more even and Phesant had couple of chances on the
break to increase their lead, but as the half wore on Daisy began to pile
on pressure. A combination of missed chances and terrific defending saw
Pheasant hold on for a famous victory. They will play either Doncaster’s
Scawthorpe Athletic or Mexborough’s Queens United in the final on 24 April
at the Doncaster Rovers Eco Power Stadium when Pheasant have the chance to
become the first Blades Super Draw League side to win the competition.

MARCH – CBC PREMIER –
Crookes Purk up to ruin Sportsman’s title hopes –
After their hosts had had a player dismissed, Crookes, with the help of
two Joel Purkiss strikes came from two down to win 3-2 at second place
Norton Sportsman and potentially end their hosts title chances. Both sides
had early chances, but it was Sportsman that opened the scoring when Matt
Ord picked up a loose goal kick and drove forward to slide in Anthony
Holmes who produced a good finish. The second half started with some
Crookes pressure, but it was Sportsman that struck on the break when Luke
Francis exchanged passes with Ord before Francis found the net.
Sportsman looked to be in control, but when Joel Purkiss was fouled just
outside the area, the defender saw red and, to rub salt into the wounds,
Purkiss scored from the free kick. Purkiss soon grabbed his second to
bring the scores level and Crookes won it when John Brelsford’s cross shot
found the top corner.
Leaders
Joker Wickersley Youth also found themselves behind at Handsworth Everest
Inn, but two Ben Thornton (pictured left) goals helped Joker to a 4-2
victory to go seven points clear. Everest took the lead in the first half
when Lou Jackson's pass found Lee Slingsby in the box and he slid the ball
under the keeper. Handsworth kept pressing and Liam Greenfield's cross
shot just went past the post from 20 yards
and Sam Marsden shot just wide from inside the area. Joker hit back
and only a great diving save from the Handsworth keeper denied Nathan
Taylor, but an equaliser came when Liam O’Brien found Ben Thornton out
wide and his cross allowed Adam Daughtrey to slam home inside the six yard
box.
The second half saw Joker score three quick goals. Liam O’Brien crossed
for Thornton to turn the ball in and three minutes later a Danny Parker
cross was missed by the Everest keeper and dropped into the net. Five
minutes later Joe Austin was tripped by the keeper and the resulting
penalty was driven low into the corner of the net by Thornton. Everest
then showed great spirit to create a lot of chances. Liam Greenfield fired
into the bottom corner from inside the box to make it 4-2 and Lou
Jackson's header from a corner hit the crossbar. The Joker keeper then
made two great saves to deny Jay Evison and Carl Bowler headed just over
from a corner. Mike Golland fired over the bar from ten yards when he
should have scored and Handsworth appealed for a penalty when Ben
Shackshaft went down in the area, but referee Dan Laugharne waved it away
and Joker held on.
Joker’s biggest threat looks as if it will come from Stannington Village
who beat Civil Sports 6-0 with the help of doubles from Jon Wall and Luca
Defalco. Stannington took the lead when a good run and cross by Defalco
was finished first time by Wall. The second came when Dave Shepherd’s
through ball allowed Defalco to round the keeper to score and Defalco then
took advantage of a defensive error to score his second. Wall then grabbed
his second when he met Charlie Hobson’s cross at the back post to put
Stannington four up at the break. The second half saw Jack Haslam break
clear to score the fifth and in the dying minutes a Wall corner was headed
home by Ben Cook to complete the scoring.
Royal Earl kept their hopes alive with a narrow victory over Norton Oaks.
Earl took the lead with a Joe Pearson tap in halfway through first half
and with Oaks making a real game of it, it wasn’t until the last minute
that Sam Fewkes smashed home from a tight angle to finally seal the
victory for Earl.
The day’s other CBC Premier game saw AFC Dronfield and Oughtibridge WM
share the points after a 3-3 draw. Oughtibridge went ahead early in the
game through Matt Harrison and although Joe Taylor scored direct from a
corner to level the scores, Matt Cowen and Matt Ensor goals gave
Oughtibridge a 3-1 lead at half time. Dronfield hit back after the break
and levelled the scores with James Taylor and Tim Pitt strikes. Both sides
went close in the final minutes, but it finished all square.
13
MARCH – DIVISION 1 –
Eckington end FC Inter’s perfect record –
A
Pat Stothard (pictured right) strike helped Eckington to hold leaders FC
Inter to a 1-1 draw to become the first team to stop Inter taking maximum
points. Although both sides had chances in the first half, the game
remained goalless at the break, but five minutes into the second half
Stothard broke the deadlock. It looked like Eckington would end the
leaders unbeaten record, but Inter kept plugging away and five minutes
from time skipper Chris Lees smashed home Inter’s equaliser.
Two Ross Thompson (pictured left) strikes helped second place Boynton
Sports to a 4-1 victory at Intake Old Boys to narrow the gap to seven
points. All the goals came after the break with Ethan Wilkinson setting
Roan Heeley for the first, before Thompson scored direct from a corner.
Wilkinson then provided a second assist for Kurt Cockburn to tap home,
before Thompson netted his second from the penalty spot. Another penalty
allowed Jack Heald to score a late consolation for Intake.
Sheffield
South climbed to third after two last gasp Ryan Phillips (pictured right)
strikes gave them a remarkable 6-5 victory against New Bohemians.
Bohemians took an early lead when James Hasings cut the ball back for Chay
Hill to find the corner of the net. South equalised with a Chris Samuels
penalty, but Bohemians went back in front when Dale Jones put Hill through
for his second and they doubled their lead before half time when Sam Brown
netted after a scramble in the box. South came out like an express train
after the break and goals from Said Benaissa, Brad Smith and John Rossiter
putting them ahead for the first time. Bohemians fought back and levelled
with a Sam Brown strike and then looked to have won it with a Hastings
penalty, but the two last gasp strikes from Phillips saw the points go to
South instead.
A
Liam Davies winner against Wadsley Jack Athletic kept Sheffield Sixs in
the promotion race. Wadsley opened the scoring when Leon Dearns
capitalised on an error, but Sixs equalised before half time when Ross
Lamkin squared for Aaron buck to tap home. A cagey second half was decided
when Lamkin won a penalty which was converted by Davies.
Brinsworth
Phoenix climbed out of the bottom three with an emphatic victory over a
Southey Social they had lost to the previous week. Phoenix took a deserved
lead when a touch of magic from midfield general Rob Gardiner when he took
advantage of a defensive mix up to lob the keeper. They doubled the lead
when Daniel Commander floated in a cross for man-mountain Dane Hodgson to
head home and it became three when Logan Pearce showed quick feet to
dazzle past three defenders to bend home an absolute pearler. The second
half saw Jack Hawkes get in on the act with a real striker’s finish and
the scoring was completed when new signings Danny Clinton (pictured left)
and Marcus Gordon combined before Clinton was brought down in the box, and
he picked himself up to send the keeper the wrong way from the spot.
13
MARCH – DIVISION 2 –
Lion Savaged by Chapeltown and Whitehill close up –
Mitch Savage (pictured left) hit a hat-trick to help Chapeltown RBL come
from behind to beat leaders Red Lion 5-1 and throw the title race wide
open. It was first vs second at St Georges Park and after a scrappy start
in the wind, Red Lion took the lead when Daniel Nelson scored from the
edge of the box. That served to kick RBL in to action, who drew level when
Niall Smith was brought down in the box and Mitch Savage stepped up to
convert. Within five minutes Legion took the lead as Denham Saxton was
this time brought down in the area as he was about to shoot and Savage
this time finding the top corner from the spot.
Legion started the second half with more intent and with Jed Phillips
leading the line soon extended the lead when Jacob Walkland’s marauding
run ended with a cross for Joe Moorhouse to apply the finish in the area.
Mitch Savage then completed his hat trick with a thunderbolt from 30 yards
beating the keeper all ends up. The scoring was completed late on when
super sub Morgan Cowell sent Niall Smith racing clear to lift over the
keeper. |

MARCH – LEAGUE TWENTYTWO CUP –
Joker leave
Pheasant Green with envy –
The last of the League Twentytwo Cup quarter finals saw a Kris Lee-Green
(pictured right) strike in extra time give Joker Wickersley Youth a 2-1
victory at Wadsley Bridge Pheasant. Joker made a strong start and took the
lead when Ben Thornton’s low cross was turned in at the back post by an
unmarked Adam Daughtrey. They nearly doubled the lead soon after, but
Parirs Dixon was denied by the Pheasant keeper Joel Statham and it proved
crucial as a minute later Lee Gillott hit a great strike to level the
scores. Statham was in action again soon after to stop Ben Thornton
restoring Joker’s lead and the teams went into the break level.
It
stayed like that throughout the second half and the first half of extra
time, but a winner finally came with just ten minutes remaining when
Daughtrey made the opening for Lee-Green to turn in the winner. Joker will
now face Handsworth Everest Inn in the semi-finals on 3 April at the HSBC
Sports Ground along with the other semi-final, Royal Earl v Norton
Sportsman. Both ties will kick-off at 11 am.

MARCH – SUNDAY JUNIOR CUP –
Johnson has a party at Cotts expense –
Ross Johnson (pictured left) scored twice as Division Two Brinsworth
Whitehill blew Division One Cotts out of the Sunday Junior Cup 5-1. Joe
McGuinness, Matt Claxton and Jonny Claxton netted Whitehill’s others, with
Cotts only reply coming from Callum Shaw. Whitehill will now face another
Division One side in Boynton Sports in the semi-final.

MARCH – CBC PREMIER –
Crookes put a dent in Earl’s title hopes –
Crookes produced their best performance of the season to put a real dent
in Royal Earl’s title hopes as Joel Purkiss (pictured right) scored twice
in Crookes’s 5-2 victory over them. It started well for Earl when an own
goal put them ahead, but goals from Purkiss and Andy Parkin then put
Crookes ahead. Theo Wilson levelled for Earl before half time, but the
second half belonged to Crookes with Michael Vella, Pete Smith and a
second from Purkiss giving them victory.
Handsworth
Everest Inn’s chances were also damaged for a second week running by
Oughtibridge WM as the hosts completed an eight day double over them, 2-1,
to lift themselves out of the bottom three. Liam Greenfield gave Everest
the lead, but Oughtibridge levelled when Matt Harrison’s free kick was
spilled by the keeper and Ollie Black (pictured left) pounced to score.
Oughtibridge’s winner came in the second half when Matt Cowen played a
class ball through the defence for Jordan Holland to run through and
finish calmly.
Stannington Village made no mistake though as Jimmy Middleton hit a
hat-trick in a 10-1 win over Norton Oaks. Stannington’s first came when
Shaun Flynn’s cross allowed Jon Wall to side-foot home and their second
came from another cross by Flynn, with Lee Johnstone heading home. Flynn
got his name on the scoresheet when he chipped the keeper when through one
on one, before Jack Haslam who finished in the bottom corner to make it
4-0 at half-time.
Norton’s goal came after the break when Rezi Useh took the ball into the
area and curled it past the keeper, but a fifth soon came for Stannington
when a great cross cum shot from Wall flew into the top corner. Haslam
grabbed his second, before Middleton hit his first with a good right foot
finish into the top corner. A good move down the right and the cross
allowed Charlie Hobson to nip in before the keeper for number eight. An
over the shoulder volley from Middleton into the top corner made it nine
and the final goal came when sub Joe Hawksworth’s thunderous 20 yarder hit
the post and came back to Johnstone who crossed for Middleton to head in
for his hat-trick.

Pollard double keeps South in the promotion hunt –
Two Harry Pollard (pictured left) strikes helped Sheffield South to a 3-1
victory at one of their main promotion rivals, Sheffield Sixs. Chris
Samuels netted South’s other from the penalty spot and although Ross
Lamkin turned home Harry Buxton's cut back to give Sixs some hope, South
ran out worthy winners and are up to fourth four points ahead of Sixs, but
Sixs have two games in hand.
Leaders FC Inter were pushed hard by Intake Old Boys before Inter made it
eleven wins out of eleven with a 2-0 victory. It took an hour for Inter to
take the lead with Sam Read’s bullet header and even then they couldn’t
relax until the final minute when Chris Lees netted Inter’s second.
Boynton Sports went back into second place with a 3-1 victory at New
Bohemians. Ethan Wilkinson, Jake Gamban and Lee Jordan goals put Boynton
in charge before Bohemians netted a consolation when James Hastings put
Sam Smith in to finish into the top corner.
Kieran
Hopkinson (pictured right) scored twice as Southey Social climbed out of
the bottom three with victory over fellow strugglers Brinsworth Phoenix.
Jordan Livett, Kieran Wainwright and Brandon Whitfield netted Southey’s
others, whilst Reegan Howarth and Kieran Goff netted for Phoenix.

Renegade fold, Red Lion stay top, but Chapeltown
are held again –
The sad news was that after struggling for much of the season, Renegade
Football has decided to fold, meaning all the points and goals from their
games will be removed from the records. Although Red Lion lost points
because of this they kept their hold on top spot with a 2-0 victory over
Beighton Magpies. After not playing for several weeks Beighton looked a
bit rusty, but they defied the leaders in the first half, including a
penalty save by keeper Danny King. After the break, a couple of lapses of
concentration by Magpies were taken advantage of by Chris Hopkins and
Jamie Jones to give Lion victory.
Chapeltown
RBL lost ground on them though after a last gasp James McNally (pictured
left) strike helped Jubilee Rangers hold them to a draw for a second week
running. Jubilee had the chance to take a first half lead when they were
awarded a penalty, but it was saved by RBL keeper James Birch. RBL then
went close when Niall Smith rounded the goalkeeper, but hit the side
netting and the half remained goalless. After the break both teams had
chances, but it was Legion that took the lead when Morgan Cowell turned
well and struck from 25 yards, seeing his effort hit the post and go on.
They then had several good chances, but, along with some misses, the
Jubilee goalkeeper made two excellent stops. RBL were left to rue those
misses as a long ball landed to the Jubilee winger McNally to volley into
the top corner in the 95th minute. |
