JAN - SUNDAY SENIOR CUP
-
Adam's the apple of Pheasant's eye -
After taking the brave decision to move their Sunday Senior Cup quarter
final tie to the Olympic Legacy Park, Wadsley Bridge Pheasant’s reward
is a first ever spot in the semi-finals after a 2-0 victory over last
season's beaten finalists Scawthorpe Athletic. Pheasant had the better
of the first half and took the lead when Adam Todd (left) was brought
down in the area and he picked himself up to score from the spot.
Although Scawthorpe had more of the game in the second half, Pheasant
missed a great chance to increase their lead, but Pheasant’s clincher
eventually came when they were awarded a second penalty, and although
Jordan Livett’s spot kick came back off the post, Lewis Fothergill was
on hand to knock home the rebound.

JAN - CBC PREMIER -
Leaders
almost Bowled over, but Redmires make no mistake -
Despite two Alex Rippon goals, CBC
Premier leaders Royal Earl dropped two valuable points as Brad Bowland
(right) scored two and made one for visitors Norton Sportsman, and only
a late Connor Chaplin goal for Earl rescued a 3-3 draw for the leaders.
Rippon gave Earl the lead until Robbie Cupitt put Bowland in for his
first. Bowland then set up Chris Lewis to give Norton a half-time lead,
but with the wind at their backs after the break, Earl levelled with
Rippon’s second. It looked as if Norton had won it when Lewis set up
Bowland for his second, but Chaplin planted a terrific free-kick past
the keeper to make sure Earl at least took a point.
Tom Whiting and Jon Wall both hit
hat-tricks, along with singles for Conall Jacklin and Ben Graney, as new
title favourites Redmires maintained their all-win record with an 8-3
victory at Handsworth Pub. When Russ Hobson and Callum Mawbey had netted
Handsworth’s first two, they were 4-2 down after just ten minutes. Then
game was 4-2 after just 10 mins. The game settled down after that and it
wasn’t until the second half that Redmires class brought more goals and
they ran out easy winners despite Chris Barnes scoring Handsworth’s
third.
Joel Purkiss also hit a hat-trick as
Crookes maintained their challenge with a 5-1 home win over Oughtibridge
WM. Crookes were rocked when Strachan Sampson gave Oughtibridge an early
lead, but Pete Smith had Crookes level before half time. The second half
belonged to Crookes with Purkiss’s treble and one from James Knowles
giving them a comfortable victory.
Wickersley Youth climbed out of the
bottom three when they came from behind to beat Cotts 2-1. Mike Blythen
headed Cotts in front just before half-time, but Wickersley had the
majority of the play after the break and the Cotts keeper was forced to
make several quality saves to keep his side in front. He managed to save
a Johnny Claxton shot, but Mike Cookson was on hand to scramble home the
equaliser. When the keeper made his only error late in the game, it was
severely punished as Brad Carroll chipped Wickersley’s winner into an
empty net.
26 JAN - DIVISION 1 -
Cobden increase their lead, whilst two Jordan hat-tricks lift Civil
into the top three -
Cobden View increased their lead at the top of Division One with a 3-1
victory at promotion rivals Boynton Sports. Free kicks saw Will Cutler
and Mike McVay put Cobden two up at the break and although Ricardo
Stewart pulled one back for Boynton, Sam Porter met Aaron Ellis’s
inviting cross to lash home Cobden’s third.
Second place Intake Sports dropped points in a 2-2 home draw with
Chapeltown RBL. Intake led at half-time through a Harry Chamberlin
strike, but Elliott Rogan and Joe Moorhouse goals looked to be giving
Chapeltown their second away win of the season, until a late Shaun
Garwell strike gave Intake a point.
Civil
Sports replaced Norton Oaks in third place as Sheldon Jordan and Jordan
Turner both hit hat-tricks to help Civil to a resounding 7-2 victory at
Oaks. Sheldon Jordan put Civil two up before Sam Smedley pulled one
back, but a Dylan Fletcher header restored Civil’s two goal lead before
the break. Jordan Turner netted his first to increase Civil’s lead until
Scott Stringer netted Oaks’ second. Civil weren’t done though and both
Turner and Jordan completed their hat-tricks to complete the scoring.
Mosborough Whites promotion hopes were hit when they were held to a 2-2
home draw by bottom club Ranch. With a goal each for Whites’ Luke Walker
and Ranch’s Ty Gunter, the game was level, but just two minutes from
time, a second for Gunter looked to have given Ranch their first win of
the season, until Walker grabbed his second with almost the last kick of
the game. Sheffield Sixs made it three consecutive league wins as two
Danny Barnsley strikes and one from Jack Battle gave them a 3-0 victory
over Woodhouse Juniors.
Southey Social came out 3-1 winners of their local derby with Colley.
Southey started on the front foot creating a few early chances and was
rewarded early on when Todd Guest headed a corner back across goal for
Ryan Keeney to volley home. Ryan Damms then volleyed a contender for
goal of the season from 35-40 yards out when he saw the keeper off his
line to put Southey two up. Colley responded and it needed some great
defending to keep them at bay and Southey were rewarded when a great
Jamie Hopkins pass allowed Damms to hit another terrific finish to put
them three up at the break. The second half saw Southey start well, but
three injuries in 10 minutes disrupted their rhythm and Colley pulled
one back through Chris Onja, but Southey held out for the rest of the
game
26 JAN - DIVISION 2 -
Top three all win, whilst Eckington climb over Darfield -
New Bohemians maintained their four point lead at the top of Division
Two with a 4-1 victory over Prince of Wales. The leaders started slowly
and it was Prince that took the lead when Adam White’s through ball was
dummied by Charlie Hawkins and Luke Simmonds latched onto it to beat the
keeper. Bohemians levelled when a good move down the left saw Sam
Brown’s volley go in off a post and Sam Smith put Bohemians ahead before
half-time with a good finish from a tight angle. Prince started the
second half on top, but an error from their keeper gave Jono Cooper an
easy task of scoring into an empty net from 25 yards. Bohemians
completed the scoring when Smith scored his second with a header over
the keeper following a corner.
Second place Nether Green kept up the
chase as Michael Burke made it five goals in two games with a hat-trick
in their 6-1 victory over Beighton Magpies. Green’s others came from Sol
Limb, Andy Knotts and a Harry Pollard brace. The only black mark for
Green was Callum Humphries late red card for the handball on the line
that allowed Liam Milne to score Magpies consolation.
Jack Hawkes also hit three as third
place Brinsworth Phoenix also won 7-1 at Cadbury. The scoreline doesn’t
really tell the full story as Cadbury was in the game for the best part
of the first hour. Scott Bottom struck to give Cadbury the lead until,
five minutes before the break, Rob Gardiner hit an absolute beauty to
send the teams in level at half time. Cadbury had started the game with
a stand-in keeper and the situation worsened when he dislocated his
should making a save.
That was the turning point and Phoenix
was flying after that. Daniel Commander then got his first with a
reaction finish off a corner to put Phoenix ahead and that was quickly
followed by Jack Hawkes’ first with a towering header from a Brad Hardy
cross. Hawkes second came with a composed finish from a returning Liam
Jacobi pass and Commander got his second with a cool finish from another
Jacobi pass. Hawkes became provider by going round three players before
squaring for Liam Brookfield to smash home and Hawkes completed his
hat-trick and the scoring with a touch of class on a muddy pitch, by
going past two players to rifle home.
Eckington Boys replaced Darfield
United in fourth with a comfortable 5-0 victory over them. Eckington
went ahead inside six minutes when a corner pinballed around in the area
before hitting Daniel Biggin & looping into the goal. A great burst from
Alister Haydock through the middle, before laying it on a plate for Liam
Foulstone to fire home made it two and a third soon followed when a Tom
Gambles free kick was nodded home by Ben Renshaw. Joe Renshaw then broke
clean through & slotted home to give his side a four goal half time
lead. The second half saw chances for both sides, but it was late in the
game before Haydock rose highest to head home Eckingtons fifth.
Wadsley
Jack Athletic made it three wins out of four by coming from behind three
times to beat Mosborough Reds. Mosborough went close early on and
eventually took a deserved lead with a Jack Turner header, but Wadsley
levelled before the break with a George Scott (right) penalty.
Mosborough regained the lead early in the second half when James Arrand
netted at the second attempt after the keeper had blocked his first
shot, but Wadsley levelled a second time when Scott’s free kick went in
with the help of a deflection off the wall. Mosborough captured the lead
a third time when they were awarded a penalty that was confidently
tucked away by Oliver Tupling. Wadsley hit back a third time with a
terrific Jacob Walkland strike and Niall Wilkinson completed the
turn-round with Wadsley’s winner.
Shakey gained their first victory
since September by completing the double over Killamarsh Juniors. It was
a tremendous first half for Shakey with goals from Cory Mann, Steven
Dickinson, Michael Taylor and Liam Morehouse giving them a 4-0 lead at
the break. Although Killamarsh made more of a game of it in the second
half and pulled two back through Alex Platton and Ryan Foster, it wasn’t
enough to stop Shakey finally getting back to winning ways. |
21 NOV - Fixtures for FEBRUARY 2020 now added - The Fixtures for FEBRUARY have now been added to the Fixtures section of the website. Home clubs should contact their opponents and Referees where shown ASAP for the whole month. Home clubs should also make sure their pitch provider has all the details ASAP. 19 JAN - RIP Paul Carder - The League was saddened to hear that the former Wickersley Youth manager Paul Carder ahd passed away suddenly whilst on holiday. Paul was instrumental in bringing the side, intially known as Brinsworth Whitehill, to the League and he was their manager as they moved up the Divisions into the CBC Premier, before handing the reigns over to his son Lewis. Paul always made sure his team played football in the right manner and was a pleasure to be with. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time. Paul is pictured far left and is on the right of his Brinsworth Whitehill team that appeared in the 2014 Steve Gee Merit Cup Final .

Pheasant have to try again -
Wadsley Bridge Pheasant's Sunday Senior Cup quarter final with
Scawthorpe Athletic was postponed and they will have to try again next
weekend.

Southey bow out -
Despite a strong second half and a headed goal from Todd Guest, Southey
Social went out at the Sunday Junior Cup Quarter Final stage with a 2-1
defeat at Sporting Wadworth.

JAN - CBC PREMIER -
Hobson's the choice for Handsworth, whilst top two both win out of the
bottom three -
Russ Hobson scored 5 as Handsworth Pub
climbed to fifth with a stunning 7-5 victory over Wickersley Youth. The
teams observed a minutes silence before the game in respect of former
Wickersley manager Paul Carder. Hobson put Handsworth two up before
Wickersley pulled one back when Drew Houghton’s run and cross was tapped
in at the second attempt by Jordan Thomas, but almost straight away,
Harry Johnson struck a third for Handsworth. Jonathan Claxton headed in
a deflected shot for Wickersley’s second, but Matt Ellis’s deflected
free kick restored Handsworth’s two-goal advantage.
Wickersley hit back again when Adam
Daughtrey and Houghton combined to set up a second for Thomas, but
before the break Hobson completed his hat-trick with a terrific overhead
scissor kick. Ten minutes into the second half, Hobson hit his fourth
when Handsworth was awarded a penalty, but a minute later, Ross
Johnson’s shot could only be parried by the Handsworth keeper and
Daughtrey tapped home the rebound. Wickersley got even closer when
Thomas’s cross allowed Houghton to make it 6-5, but Hobson scored his
fifth in a goalmouth scramble to make the points safe for Handsworth.
The
top two moved further away from the rest though. Leaders Royal Earl came
from a goal down to beat Oughtibridge WM 5-3. Oughtibridge went into the
game missing several regulars and gave debuts to Herve Sezerano and
Keian Ward, but they stunned Earl by taking the lead when Adam Thomas
whipped in a great free kick that was put home by Harley Scholey. They
almost doubled their lead when Callum Chambers shot was saved by the
keeper, but Earl began to get into their stride and Oliver Beaumont
levelled before the break. Early in the second half, a Connor Chappell
penalty and a cool Richard Tootle finish put Earl in charge, but Tom
Fletcher fired in a beauty to put Oughtibridge back in it. Alex Rippon
(right) grabbed Earl’s fourth, but Oughtibridge hit back again through
Chas Tunnard and Chambers thought he had levelled when hit shot cannoned
off the bar. Rippon grabbed his second in the last minute to ease Earl’s
nerves.
Second
place Redmires maintained their perfect record by inflicting a second
defeat of the season on Crookes 2-1. Redmires went in front with a 30
yard Jon Wall (left) free kick, but Crookes hit back before half time
with a Joe Jerrison strike. After the break, Crookes had more
possession, but Redmires looked more dangerous and, after hitting the
woodwork four times, they finally grabbed a winner when Ben Palmer
struck a contender for the goal of the season with a 35 yard
half-volley.

JAN - DIVISION 1 -
Stirrup gives Oaks a leg up -
The only Division One game to beat the conditions saw Richard Stirrup
(right) score a hat-trick as Norton Oaks won a thriller, 7-5 at Colley,
to move up to third.
Both sides had early chances, but it was Colley that took the lead with
a Billy Thornley strike. Colley missed more chances and paid for it when
Nasa Meah put Stirrup in for the equaliser. Oaks then took the lead with
a great Matt Lennox finish, but Colley hit back to level through Jack
Appleyard. Lennox and Poole combined to allow Dan Poole to put Oaks back
in front and they doubled their lead before half-time when a sumptuous
Scott Stringer cross was met by a Meah header over the keeper and into
the far corner. Stringer increased the lead to 5-2 just after the break
and although Appleyard netted his second for Colley, Stirrup scored a
terrific solo goal to keep Oaks in charge. Instead of giving up, Colley
hit back with a Joe Woodhouse and Ian Sharland strikes, but with Colley
pressing hard for an equaliser, Oaks broke and Stirrup rounded the
keeper to complete the scoring.
19 JAN - DIVISION 2 -
Burke at the double for Green, whilst Wadsley s-Woon over Benji and
Reds gain revenge -
Michael Burke scored twice as second place Nether Green moved to within
four points of the top of Division Two with a 6-4 victory in a yet
another thriller at Darfield United. It was Tom Davis’s second game in
charge after agreeing to take over the manager’s role for Green and Jim
Pollard gave his side an early lead. After Sean Bunyan missed a penalty
for Darfield, Green doubled Green’s lead through Harry Pollard and they
looked to have the game sewn up by half time with two more goals from
Jack Holli-Smith and Sol Limb. After a few words of ‘encouragement’ in
the Darfield dressing room at half time they came out all-guns blazing
and two Jordan Beardsley strikes put them back in the game. Burke netted
to keep them at bay, but an Elliot Phelan strike and a third for
Beardsley had Green sweating until Burke netted his second late on.
There
was another high scoring game, including a Benji Woon (right) treble, as
Wadsley Jack won 6-3 at Prince of Wales. Prince took the lead when
Charlie Hawkins’ cross saw Dan Neilson rise like a salmon to head home
and they doubled their lead before half-time when Matt Waterhouse met
keeper Ben Raynes’ clearance to hit a left foot shot past the Wadsley
keeper. The second half belonged to Wadsley, with Woon’s hat-trick
together with George Scott, Reece James and Ethan Wilkinson strikes
winning it for them despite Tom Furniss briefly levelling things for
Prince.
Mosborough Reds gained revenge for the
previous week's defeat by Beighton Magpies by beating them 2-0. It took
just four minutes for Luke Newman to head home from a terrific Alix
Sorsby cross and Oliver Tupling hit a brilliant free kick to double the
lead in the tenth minute. After that the Mosborough defence stood firm
and their first clean sheet of the season meant they went home with the
points. |

JAN - SUNDAY SENIOR CUP
-
Pheasant will have to try again -
Wadslet Bridge Pheasant's Sunday Senior Cup quarter final with last
season's beaten finalists Scawthorpe Athletic was postponed and they
will have to try again next weekend.
12 JAN - SUNDAY JUNIOR CUP
-
New Bohemians and Nether Green into the semi-finals -
James Hastings added two more to his season's tally as New Bohemians
brushed aside FC Portcullis 6-1 to reach the Sunday Junior Cup
semi-finals and they were joined by fellow League newcomers Nether Green
after their narrow 4-3 victory at AFC Mallard.
Bohemians
controlled the game from start to finish, James Hastings (left) opened
the scoring on 10 minutes jinking his way into the box with a low finish
into the bottom corner. Liam Goodall then quickly added a second with a
fantastic finish outside of the area into the bottom right corner. Matt
Beck then made it three after a terrific run on the right hand side and
a low finish across the goalkeeper. Sam Smith finished the scoring in
the first half who made no mistake after the goalkeeper pushed a shot
straight to him. Joe Shipman made it five soon after the interval with a
looping finish over the goalkeeper following a corner. Portcullis then
got their consolation after a defensive mix up gifted them their goal,
but Hastings then wrapped up the scoring with another neat finish into
the bottom corner.
Two goals from Sol Limb and one each
for Jim and Harry Pollard saw Nether Green establish a 4-1 lead, but two
goals by their hosts in the last fifteen minutes made it an
uncomfortable finish. They could be joined in the semi-finals by a third
Blades Super Draw team if Southey Social win their delayed quarter
final. It was the end of the road
though for Sheffield Sixs after a 4-0 defeat at Birdwell Rovers.

JAN - LEAGUE TWENTYTWO CUP
-
Crookes, Redmires and Wickersley make the semis -
Redmires won the all-CBC Premier tie with Norton Sportsman 3-0 to reach
the League Twentytwo Cup semi-finals for the first time in five years.
Man-of-the-Match Ben Graney opened the scoring before Tom Whiting added
a second. Matt Raey (right) celebrated his return to the side by scoring
the third and had it not been for Sportsman’s keeper Conor Merone making
several great saves it could have been worse for the visitors. To rub
salt into Sportsman’s wounds they even missed a late penalty.
Redmires were joined by fellow CBC Premier side Crookes after their 10-2
win over Division One Chapeltown RBL. RBL started well shook their hosts
by taking the lead when James Dimelow curled a screamer into the top
corner from 30 yards. RBL keeper Joe Hindmarch then made a fantastic
triple save, but he was powerless to stop Matt Cowen and Pete Smith
goals giving Crookes a 2-1 half time lead. Crookes turned the screw at
the start of the second half and scored 5 in quick succession, with
Cowen’s second and one each for Joel Purkiss, James Knowles, Tom Newman
and James Reed. Ben Wright got a consolation with a deft header at the
back post before Crookes stepped it up again and further goals from a
Michael Vella double and one from Paul Wood confirmed Crookes place in a
third consecutive semi-final.
Through
to their first semi-final is a third CBC Premier side, Wickersley Youth,
after a Kris Lee-Green (left) strike gave them a their narrow victory
over the last remaining Division Two club, Eckington Boys.
Despite the heavy ptch at
Herringthorpe Stadium, it was a lively start to the game with chances at
either end. Alister Haydock caused the Wickersley defence all sorts of
problems and hitting the post with a close range header and Wickersley
keeper Jack Pasley also made two great saves. Wickersley’s best chance
came just before half time, when Kris Lee-Green broke through the middle
and it took a good save from Luke Sanderson to keep the game goalless at
the break.
The second half began as the first
finished with good attacking and defending from both sides. The
stalemate was eventually broken seven minutes from time when Adam
Daughtrey gave the ball to the ubiquitous Lee-Green who produced one of
his trademark screamers low and hard into the Eckington net from 25
yards.
One
of the delayed Round 3 ties
saw Stannington Village beat Southey Social
4-1. Stannington flew out of the traps and scored early when a deep
cross from Ben Cook found Joe Barker, and he headed back perfectly for
Lee Johnstone to head home. They doubled their lead when Josh Coulson
fed Joe Barker (right) and he smashed the ball into the top corner from
25 yards. Jack Haslam squared for Barker to make it three before
half-time and it was 4-0 after an hour when Ben Cook put Shaun Flynn
away, and his pinpoint cross was headed in by Lewis Dickinson. Southey
never gave up though and they scored a deserved consolation through
Jamie Hopkins. The other Roundd 3 tie between Boynton Sports and
Royal Earl was postponed yet.

JAN - CBC PREMIER -
Ellis
double helps Handsworth out of the bottom three –
The day’s only
CBC Premier game played saw Matt Ellis (left) score twice as Handsworth
Pub won 4-1 at Woodseats Club to move out of the bottom three.
In difficult first half conditions, Handsworth Pub were resilient with
their defending and tried to break on the counter attack, and it was
from one such break that Callum Mawbey hit a terrific right foot half
volley to give Handsworth a narrow half time lead. The second half saw
Handsworth use their squad to freshen things up and Russell Hobson
scored with a header from a Steve Hawes corner. Although Woodseats
pulled one back through Sam Read, two great goals from Ellis sealed all
three points for Handsworth and complete the double over their hosts.
12
JAN - DIVISION 1 -
Colley get Turnered over by Civil -
Jordan Turner (right) scored five as Civil Sports moved back into
Division One’s top three with a 7-2 victory over promotion rivals
Colley. Civil took an early lead through Turner, and although Colley
soon levelled with an Ian Sharland penalty, Turner had completed his
hat-trick in the first 15 minutes. Along with Dyan Fletcher, Turner
added another to make it 5-1 at the break. Colley came out and clawed a
second back when Danny Parker smashed into the bottom corner, but
Turner’s fifth and one from Wes Bamford
The top two kept them at bay though as
they both registered narrow wins, with leaders Cobden View just pipping
Woodhouse Juniors 3-2 and second place Intake Old Boys beat Ranch by the
same score.
Despite dominating the first half, Cobden
only had a Sam Porter goal to show for it. Alex Pursehose ran through to
make it two after the break and a Joe Taylor penalty looked to have
sealed it for Cobden, but Woodhouse hit back with goals from Dan
Lockwood and Matt Burgin to leave Cobden hanging on.
It was a similar story at Intake, who
were 3-0 up at the break with goals from Dale Wood, Callum Paine and
Harry Chamberlain, but Ranch hit back with goals from the returning
Conor Brunt and Ty Gunter and they came very close to taking a point.
12
JAN - DIVISION 2 -
Phoenix stop Prince's rise, whilst both Magpies and Killamarsh win
away for the first time -
Jack Hawkes (far left) and Sam Firth (second left) trebles saw
Brinsworth Phoenix climb back into Division Two’s top three by bringing
Prince of Wales recent good run to a shuddering halt with a 6-1 victory
over them. Phoenix opened the scoring when a great move ended with Matt
Garnett crossing for Jack Hawkes to score with a superb volley. Sam
Firth made it two before half-time from the spot after Brad Hardy had
been brought down. Soon after the break Hawkes danced round four
defenders before unselfishly squaring the ball for Firth to tap in his
second. Prince pulled one back when they were awarded a penalty and Luke
Simmonds scored, but Phoenix quickly restored their advantage when Firth
completed his hat-trick by curling home an effort from edge of the box.
Hawkes then got his second by lobbing the keeper from distance after
after fastening onto Rob Gardiner’s through ball and he completed his
hat-trick with another mazey run past four defenders and the keeper.
It
was a ‘Red Letter’ day for Killamarsh Juniors as an Alex Platton (right)
double helped them to their first ever away win, 2-1 at Wadsley Jack
Athletic. George Scott netted one for Wadsey and only a double save by
Killamarsh keeper Tom Syphas kept his side in front. Beighton Magpies
also celebrated a first away win of the season after a single Dale
Featherstone goal gave them their first away win, and first clean sheet,
of the season at Mosborough Reds. |

Rossington hit for Six and Hastings at the double as Bohemians battle
through –
Despite falling behind to Rossington
after just 11 minutes, Sheffield Sixs hit back to level before half time
through Harry Buxton. The game looked to be heading for extra time when
Brad Howe (right) rifled home to give Sixs victory and a place in next
weekend’s Sunday Junior Cup Quarter Finals when they travel to Birdwell
Rovers. They were joined in the Quarter Finals by New Bohemians after
they completed a 3-1 victory at Thorncliffe Arms. Sam Smith put the
visitors ahead and they doubled their lead before the break when James
Hastings converted the penalty after he had been brought down in the
area. Thorncliffe pulled one back soon after half time, but Bohemians
sealed the victory when Hastings produced an impressive chip over the
keeper. They entertain FC Portcullis in next weekend’s Quarter Final.

JAN - CBC PREMIER -
Reet
and Parry doubles help to keep Redmires perfect record, but Earl stay
top with victory at Cotts -
Despite Tom Whiting failing to find the
net for the first time this season, Redmires kept their perfect record
in the CBC Premier as Danny Reet (left) and Steve Parry doubles helped
them to a 5-0 victory at Woodseats Club. Just 24 hours after the birth
of his second son Alfie, player-manager Dave Knaggs set up the opener
for Reet, before both Reet and George Rudd headed home Jon Wall corners.
Woodseats’ keeper was keeping his side in the game until Steve Parry
added two more late in the game.
Royal Earl stayed top though with a hard
fought 3-1 victory at Cotts. After a goalless first half, Earl took the
lead with a Connor Chappell penalty and Sam Smith soon doubled their
lead. Cotts hit back in the second half when a good move down the right
finished with Carl Hodgkinson smashing home from the edge of the area.
Just when it looked like they would get back into the game a defensive
mix-up allowed Alex Rippon to net Earl’s third to clinch their victory.
Norton
Sportsman kept up their challenge with a 2-1 win at Wickersley Youth.
James Archer (right) drilled home a free kick to put Norton ahead, but
they couldn’t take advantage of a couple of chances they had to extend
their lead. Wickersley took the game to their visitors after the break
and they were awarded a penalty when Jamie Lee Fawcett was tripped in
the area, but Jordan Thomas’s spot kick was brilliantly saved by Conor
Merone making his first appearance after a back injury. Wickersley did
get a deserved equaliser though when Kallum Nix’s nifty footwork allowed
him to cross for Fawcett to score. It could have gone either way at this
point, but it was Norton that won it when Connor Pryde outpaced the home
defence to beat the keeper.
Crookes also kept up their challenge as
their first clean sheet of the season helped them to a 3-0 victory at
Handsworth Pub. Joel Purkiss just before half time and James Knowles
just after the break put Crookes in charge. A third from
Eshan Mohammad settled the game.
Both Wadsley Bridge Pheasant and Stannington Village lost ground on the
top two after they fought out a goalless stalemate. Stannington missed
the best chances of the game, but Pheasant came closest to winning it
when they hit a post.

JAN - DIVISION 1 -
Cobden increase their lead at the top as Intake are brushed aside by
Whites -
Division One leaders Cobden
View increased their lead to four points after two Joe Slater strikes
gave them a 2-1 win at Chapeltown RBL. In a high quality game, Slater
bundled the ball home to give Cobden a half time lead. RBL keeper James
Abramski had to go off as he took a knock in the melee. Defender Joe
Wadsworth went in the sticks and was beaten early in the second half
when an effort from range by Slater deceived him. Not long after
Wadsworth was injured clearing a corner so RBL were forced to use their
third keeper of the game, Ross Lamkin. RBL then pulled one back when a
corner from Hanson was met by the head of veteran Dale Shaw. Lamkin then
kept RBL in the game with a couple of excellent saves before RBL thought
they had equalised, again it was Shaw from a corner but the referee
ruled it out for handball. RBL kept on pressing but couldn't get the
equaliser they perhaps deserved.
Second place Intake Old Boys’ came a real cropper with a 4-0 defeat at
Mosborough Whites. Luke Walker and Kingsley Lewin goals in the first
half were followed by Joe Glover and Jack Bennett strikes in the second
half as Whites climbed to within striking distance of the top three.
Southey Social started the day in third, but dropped three places as
Norton Oaks replaced them with a 5-3 victory over them. Oaks’ patched up
side, including three goalkeepers, saw Southey strike first with a
Kieran Hopkinson penalty, but Southey paid for missing other chances
when Sam Smedley levelled. Southey restored their lead just before the
break when skipper Todd Guest headed home a Byron Mullen cross. After
half time, Ryan Whitney had an effort saved by the Oks keeper and Oaks
levelled when Smedley scored with an overhead kick. Against the run of
play, Harry Morris set up Nasaruddin Meah to put Oaks in front, but
Southey went straight down the pitch to level with a Ryan Damms finish.
Despite some extremely tired legs, Oaks went back in front when Richard
Gill dribbled the ball from the right wing and hit a thunderbolt into
the top corner with his left foot. Southey went all out for another
equaliser, but were inevitably caught on the break in the final minute
when Gill dinked the ball over the keeper for his second.
Boynton Sports also climbed above Southey with a 4-3 victory at Civil
Sports. Boynton took an early lead when Curtis Priday whipped a cross
over the defenders for Jake Ballinger to meet and bend it round the
keeper. They quickly doubled their lead when Kurtis Cockburn headed on
to Sam Civil to set Ballinger up for his second. Dylan Fletcher pulled
one back for the hosts before half time, but an error by the Civil
Sports keeper allowed Sam Civil to score against his namesake. Rob
Shelley pulled another back for the hosts, but Sam Civil hit his second
to put Boynton back in command and although veteran Gary Eades netted a
third for the hosts, Boynton held on for the three points that lifted
them to fourth.
Colley
also went above Southey with an 11-3 thrashing of Woodhouse Juniors. An
Ian Sharland penalty gave Colley the lead before a bizarre two minutes
saw two more penalties awarded to Woodhouse. The first was saved, but
the second was converted by Billy Wakefield. Colley took control before
half time with two from Jack Appleyard and a Billy Thorley curler into
the top corner. Colley came out for the second half on fire as a Danny
Parker (left) hat trick and one each for Matt Jebson, Regan Dempsey,
Matt Meeney and Joe Woodhouse took their tally to eleven, whilst Lee
Williams and Leon Cheslett netted Woodhouse’s others.

JAN - DIVISION 2 -
Simmonds hits Cadbury for six and Darfield win a thriller, but Nether
Green and Phoenix are both held -
Luke Simmonds (right) scored six as Prince of Wales maintained their
rich vein of form in Division Two with a 12-0 victory over Cadbury.
Prince were rampant with their others coming from an Aaron Watts brace
and one each for Bradley Gray, Matt Waterhouse, Charles Hawkins and
George Duffin.
Despite manager Ben Raynes having to deputise in goal it was Prince’s
third clean sheet in four games and another record smashed.
Darfield United also won at home, 4-3
over Mosborough Reds, to go second. Reds took a deserved lead when Scott
Williams headed home an Alix Sorsby cross, but Darfield levelled through
Kailum McDermott and took the lead before half time when Elliott Phelan
met an inch perfect Sean Bunyan pass. Phelan then extended the lead
after the break with a screamer off the bar, into the top corner. Bunyan
scored from the penalty spot after McDermott had been brought down, but
goals from James Arrand and Jack Turner left Darfield hanging on at the
end.
Nether Green slipped a place to third
after being held 1-1 at a Shakey side that produced their best
performance since they inflicted Nether Green’s only defeat of the
season in September. Cory Mann put Shakey in front with a terrific
strike from 25 yards, but a Jim Pollard strike rescued a point for
Green.
Brinsworth
Phoenix also slipped a place after they were held to a 2-2 draw at
Beighton Magpies. John Mellor took just five minutes to put Phoenix
ahead when he met Liam Brookfield’s pass and, just five minutes later, a
Jake Slaughter cross was met by Jack Hawkes head to double their lead.
Magpies began the fight back with a well worked team goal finished off
by Thomas Rofe, and equalised on the hour when Sergiu Udrea was in the
right place to finish off another well worked move. Magpies thought they
had won it until a goal was ruled offside, but were indebted to their
keeper Cameren Adams (left) for his late penalty save.
Eckington
had to rely on a Ben Beever's winner for the narrowest of victories, 1-0
at Killamarsh Juniors.
The game started slowly with both teams still running Christmas turkey
off. All the play was in midfield for most of the game until the 35th
minute when a great shot from Alister Haydock was cleared by the keeper,
but it went straight to Ben Beever who slotted in from 30yards over the
keepers head. The second half saw no real chances until Eckington were
awarded a penalty in the 70th minute from a foul on Liam Foulstone. Tom
Gardiner took the penalty, but saw it well saved by the Killamarsh
keeper Jack Thorpe (right). |
