30 Mar 2014 - MACRON CUP - Redmires and The Park set for Bramall Lane in May - The Blades Super Draw League’s Macron Cup Final at Bramall Lane on 14 May will see the 2012 finalists The Park face a Redmires side that has reached its first League Cup final in its 41 year history after they both defeated former holders of the trophy in the semi finals at the HSBC Sports Ground. The Park saw off the Civil Service side they lost to in that 2012 final, while Redmires beat the 2007 winners and last seasons beaten finalists, Ecclesfield Players Lounge. ECCLESFIELD PLAYERS LOUNGE 0 REDMIRES 2 Ecclesfield Players Lounge’s leading scorer Craig Senior had the chance to give his side the lead in the first minute when he went through with only the keeper to beat, but Redmires’ keeper Dave Reay proved up to the challenge and made the save and it was to prove a costly miss as Redmires quickly took control of the tie with two goals in the first ten minutes. There didn’t seem to be too much danger when Redmires were given a free kick out wide on the half way line, but when Dale White swung his cross in it was met by the unmarked Ben Graney who head firmly past Chris Greenwood in the Ecclesfield goal. Pictured left is Redmires scorers Dave Knaggs and Ben Graney celebrating after Graney's headed opener from Dale White's free kick. Two minutes later a swift break by Redmires caught the Ecclesfield defence napping and when Ben Palmer fed the ball to Dave Knaggs he took one touch before firing past the diving Greenwood. (pictured right) It was all Redmires at this stage and Knaggs should have made it three when he headed another White cross wide. He then had another chance when a defender misjudged a long kick by the keeper, but he dragged his shot wide. Ecclesfield tried to get back into it and a half chance was put wide by Senior, before Gavin Hunter’s run at the Redmires defence was crowded out by White and Chris Cotterill. The ball was soon back at the other end and after Knaggs set him up, Ben Palmer put his shot wide and soon after Knaggs was denied his second goal by the feet of Greenwood. Ecclesfield’s response saw Ryan Keeney’s free kick clip the wall and go for a corner and when it was swung in, Andy Baxter’s shot was comfortably saved by Reay. Joe Knight was next to have a half chance, but his header went over and it was Redmires that was quickly back on the attack, with Knaggs putting another chance wide. Gavin Hunter then had a chance for Ecclesfield, but under pressure from centre half Matt Reay, fired his shot straight at the keeper. The second half saw Redmires again looking the more likely to add to their lead and only a diving save by Greenwood stopped Knaggs when he only had the keeper to beat. That was the pattern for the remainder of the game and with skipper Scott Smith dominating the midfield exchanges, the Redmires defence was rarely troubled. Ecclesfield Players Lounge: Chris Greenwood, Dale Hirst, Scott Touhey, Mark Groves, Danny Touhey, Andy Baxter, Joe Knight, Mitchell Robinson, Craig Senior, Gavin Hunter, Ryan Keeney Subs: Matt Clarke, Ben Hill, Tom Bartholomew, Will Turnbull, Dean Foreman Redmires: Dave Reay, Dale White, Chris Cotterill, Ben Graney, Matt Reay, James Kirkham, Jon Wall, Scott Smith (C), Dave Knaggs, Ben Palmer, Hegel Noubisse, Dan Bathie, Sam Barthram, Mikey Taylor, Matt Garnett, Nick Hickson Referee: Pete Henger, Assistant Referees: Craig Couldwell, Steve Lazenby Action from the game is below (photos by Mark Rogers):
THE PARK 3 CIVIL SERVICE 1 The Park’s tie with Civil Service always promised to be a tight affair and neither side was able to dominate the early exchanges. Civil Services best chance fell to skipper Ben Brown, but The Park keeper Sam Kirk made the save look comfortable. With neither side able to get on top the value of good set-pieces was going to be important and so it proved when Mark Townsend swung his corner in and Ryan Campbell rose highest to head The Park in front. With Nick Galloway and Jordan Bletcher winning most things in the air, Civil Service were finding it hard to get their front two of Andy Bath and Stacy Sharif into the game and it was The Park that came closest to adding to their lead when Adi Tomlin’s shot was parried by Civil keeper Gary Milnes and after a scramble in the area, the ball was cleared by Ben Sanderson. The second half started with The Park looking the more threatening of the two and although chances were again hard to come by, another set-piece saw them deservedly double their lead. This time it was an Ali Mitchell corner that was met by Calvin Thomas at the near post and his header gave Milnes no chance. Pictured right is Calvin Thomas, in stripes, heading The Park's second at the near post from Ali Mitchell's corner and pictured left is Thomas celebrating his goal. Anything Civil could throw at The Park’s defence was not causing them many problems and with Kirk in commanding form behind his defenders the Civil attack was causing little problem. The Park always looked the more likely to score and when Jack Ridge robbed a defender of the ball and fed Tomlin he was stopped by a pull of his arm by Greg Dumpleton and referee Adam Burgess pointed to the spot. Mark Townsend stepped up to rifle the ball firmly past Milnes and the tie was as good as over. Civil did their best to get back into it, but they found The Park defence and keeper Kirk in commanding form. Civil did eventually gain some reward when Danny Wattam nipped between Kirk and full back Josh Ransom to fire into the roof of the net, but it was far too little and far too late to stop The Park gaining revenge for their 2012 final defeat. The teams: The Park: Sam Kirk, Josh Ransom, Ian Collins (C), Jordan Bletcher, Nick Galloway, Ben Hetherington, Adi Tomlin, Ali Mitchell, Ryan Campbell, Calvin Thomas, Mark Townsend Subs: Dan Robinson, Lewis Stokes, Aaron Walker, Jack Risge, Dave Hook Civil Service: Gary Milnes, Josh Corker, Gregg Dumpleton, Jon Charles, Ben Sanderson, Luke Parwana, Wes Bamford, Ben Brown (C), Andy Bath, Paul Billard Subs: Matt Betts, Tom Stubbs, Danny Wattam, Torick Akram, Danny Campbell Referee: Adam Burgess, Assistant Referees: Will Davis, Pete Selby Action from the game is below (photos by Mark Rogers):
CBC PREM - Stannington's all right Jack and Matt's finishes adds gloss to The Vine, while Angel leave it late - Jack Mylnek (left) set Stannington Village on their way to victory over Handsworth Turf and back to the top of the CBC Premier table, but The Vine stayed in contention as Matt Ellis (right) took his season's tally to twenty two in their win at Bulls Head. Woodhouse Angel are making a late bid for safety after three goals in the final five minutes saw them come from behind to beat Stocksbridge Park Steels. Stannington Village are back on top of the CBC Premier after their 6-0 victory over a Handsworth Turf that looks increasingly likely to suffer their first relegation. Jack Mylnek hit a post with an early chance, but when Dan Green’s long ball caused a mix-up between the Turf keeper and defender, Mylnek took advantage to put his side ahead. Sean Flynn soon doubled the lead when he met Bill Green’s cross with a right foot shot and a Gavin Davis volley made it three. It was four by half time with Mylnek tapping home Flynn’s cross and a fifth came soon after the break when a lovely weighted ball by Dean Jepson enabled Davis to round the keeper and score. Man of the match Mylnek turned provider for the sixth when his cross was rifled into the roof of the net by Robin Elliott and Stannington now look strong favourites to retain the title. The Vine haven’t given up hope though and they stayed in contention as Matt Ellis took his season's tally to twenty two in a 5-1 win at Bulls Head. After some early pressure by Bulls Head, Ellis rounded the keeper to open the scoring for The Vine and Rikki Davidson took Dan Bateman’s pass in his stride to double The Vine’s lead before half time. Ellis and Dan Simpson combined to set Davidson up to chip his second after the break and Ellis made it four with an overhead kick from Craig Woolley’s cross. Nick Ash vollied one back for Bulls Head, but Davidson and Ellis combined to set Danny Seaman up to complete the scoring with The Vine’s fifth. Woodhouse Angel are making a late bid for safety after three goals in the final five minutes saw them come from behind to beat Stocksbridge Park Steels. After Dave Kippax made a hash of a couple of chances, the first half remained goalless and it looked good for Steels when Eamon Chapman bundled home a corner to give them the lead after the break. They still held it with less than ten minutes remaining, but when Mark Coggin launched a long ball from his own half, the ball took a freak bounce over Steels stand-in keeper Nick Ward and Angel were level. Worse followed for Steels as Gareth Simons rifled home a volley from 35 yards out and Angel wrapped up three priceless points when Coggins shot was too hot to handle and Mark Barraclough turned home the rebound. DIV 1 - Loxley go four for survival, but it's the bottom three for Anston Athletic - Loxley's late bid for survival looks likely to succeed after they beat fellow strugglers Ranch to record their fourth straight victory and climb out of the bottom three for the first time this season, but Anston Athletic are certain to finish in the bottom three after their defeat at Southey Social. Loxley's late bid for Division One survival looks likely to succeed after they beat fellow strugglers Ranch 2-1 to record their fourth straight victory and climb out of the bottom three for the first time this season. Steve Mayfield gave Loxley a first half lead with a free kick that took a deflection off the wall and they doubled it after the break when Geoff Mayfield’s header forward skidded off Steve Batty’s head leaving Anthony Marshall the task of rounding the keeper to score. Ranch pulled one back when Shannon Marsland was brought down in the area and Richard berry thundered home the spot kick, but the Loxley defence wasn’t too troubled after that. It’s not so good for Anston Athletic as they are now certain to finish in the bottom three after their 4-1 defeat at Southey Social. Scott Hyndman took advantage of a poor clearance by Southey keeper Andy Guest to give Anston the lead, but after both Danny Lindley and Chris Roberts had missed good chances, when a Roberts header was stopped on the line, Sean Needham followed up to equalise for Southey. Danny Ferguson then cut in from the wing to put Southey ahead and Lindley hit their third before the break. Southey completed their victory in the second half when man of the match Todd Guest was brought down in the area and John Mellor scored from the spot. DIV 2 - Phoenix set to rise after Brown treble, while Hounds are Rudd-y good again, but rivals also win - The Division Two promotion race got even hotter after the top four all won. A Ross Brown treble helped Phoenix to victory over Chapeltown and George Rudd's second hat-trick in as many games helped Hare & Hounds to victory over FC Spartak, while John Higgins and Russ Hobson doubles saw Intake Old Boys safely home at Steelers, but above them all is The Pheasant after another two from Carl Andrews helped them to victory over Norton Oaks 'B'. The Division Two promotion race got even hotter after the four sides now occupying the top places all won. Despite a Hodkin goal for Chapeltown RBL, a Ross Brown double and one from Brad Clarke gave Phoenix a 3-1 half time lead and the second half saw Brown complete his hat-trick before Kieran Cull, Nathan Darwent and Clarke’s second made the final score 7-1 to Phoenix. All the goals came in the first half as George Rudd's (pictured left) second hat-trick in as many games helped Hare & Hounds to a 6-0 victory over FC Spartak. Ned Attrill made a flying save to stop Spartak taking a first minute lead before Rudd set up Jake Schofield to score Hounds opener. Rob Hayes then set up Schofield for his second, before Rudd took advantage of a ricochet off a defender to score his first. A Schofield cross was headed home by Rudd for his second and after Mark Bailey had thundered home a thirty yard free kick, Rudd completed the first half rout with his third. John Higgins and Russ Hobson doubles saw Intake Old Boys safely home 6-2 at Steelers. After Liam Parnell was brought down in the area, Higgins scored his first from the spot and he soon added his second after a lay-off from Hobson. Liam Garrett pulled one back for Steelers and they levelled when Blake Owen scored his twentieth of the season with a wonder free kick. Intake were in no mood to drop points though and Dan Humberstone restored their lead with a tap in after a free kick. Hobson then made it four with a solo goal and soon added his second. Tom Gabbitas saved their best til last with a twety five yard strike into the top corner. Still top of the pile though is The Pheasant after another two from Carl Andrews helped them to a 4-0 victory over Norton Oaks 'B'. A Carl Andrews penalty gave them the lead and Dylan Parrott tapped home their second after Shane Andrews run and cross had opened up the Norton defence. Carl Andrews then flicked on for brother Shane to make it three by half time and Shane returned the favour for Carl to head his second after the break. 30 March 2014 - Date set for Macron Cup Final at Bramall Lane - The Macron Cup Final is set for Bramall Lane on Wednesday 14 May 2014, with a 7:00 pm kick off. All the games that have been postponed need to be re-arranged and the home club must agree a new date with the away club and then let Keith know the new date you intend to play the game You must let Keith know the new date by 9 April. 23 Mar 2014 - CBC PREM - Wins all round as semi finalists get ready - All four Macron Cup semi finalists warmed up for Sunday’s semis with victories and in Civil Service’s case the 2-0 win against Bulls Head took them back to the top of the table. Bulls Head had a great chance to take the lead when John Kentzer’s cross found Daniel Bonnick unmarked at the back post, but he inexplicapably fired wide. Things got worse for Bonnick when his headed clearance from Gavin Wills’ corner fell to Luke Parwana and his shot flew into the top corner to give Civil the lead. With John Charles (right) holding a makeshift Civil defence together, they rarely looked like surrendering their lead and they made the points safe near the end when a short corner routine saw Paul Billard find Wes Bamford and his delicate chip beat Bulls keeper Matt Coates. Service’s semi final opponents The Park had a convincing 4-1 win over bottom club Hemsworth Villa. Ian Collins’ through ball allowed Ryan Campbell to give The Park the lead and it was doubled by Aidy Tomlin from Mark Townsend’s cross. Calvin Thomas slammed home a loose ball to make it three and although Simon Staniforth pulled one back for Villa before half time, only an inspired display stopped The Park adding many more after the break, but he was eventually beaten by Ali Mitchell following good work by Thomas. Action from the game is below:
Despite falling behind when Joe France scored at the second attempt, Ecclesfield Players Lounge warmed up for their semi against Redmires with a 4-1 win at Handsworth Turf. Andy Baxter’s deflected shot levelled the scores before half time and after the break Joe Knight put Ecclesfield in front. Matt Clarke made it three before Paul Bashforth set up fellow sub Craig Senior to complete the scoring. Redmires climbed to their highest place of the season with a 2-1 victory over Stocksbridge Park Steels. Jon Wall’s left foot shot gave Redmires a half time lead and after the break, when dave Knaggs was brought down in the area, he picked himself up to double the lead from the penalty spot. Mark Woodcock converted Adam Todd’s cross to pull one back for Steels, but they couldn’t force an equaliser. Woodhouse Angel improved their chances of avoiding the drop when they came from behind to beat local rivals Handsworth Old Boys 4-1. Mario Esposito beat the offside trap to put Handsworth ahead, but Gareth Simons (right) met Tom Goodall’s cross to volley Angel level before half time. Simons then put Angel ahead in the second half with a terrific solo goal before Chris Towey headed their third from a Dave Kippax cross. Towey completed the scoring after the Handsworth keeper fumbled Liam Kay’s corner. DIV 1 - Norton finish with a Reet good win, while Brinsworth have a Ball - Danny Reet hit a hat-trick as Division One second place Norton Oaks completed their season with victory over Southey Social and they will now have to wait to see if the chasing teams can catch them. Two of them that met saw Brinsworth Whitehill see off Old Blue Ball, while Fox & Hounds beat Cobden View with the help of a four goal salvo from Harry ONeill. Players Lounge Athletic's promotion chances look to be over as a resurgent Loxley completed the double over them. Danny Clinton hit a treble as leaders Oughtibridge pushed Aston Swallownest nearer the bottom three, but Ranch improved their chances as a goal from veteran Ian Cooper (left) helped them to victory over Anston Athletic. The Blades Super Draw League’s match of the day saw Brinsworth Whitehill produce a devastating second half to beat fellow Division One promotion challengers Old Blue Ball 4-1 and make themselves strong favourites for a first ever promotion to the CBC Premier Division. With the advantage of a strong wind at their backs, it was Ball that made the brighter start, but Adam Halloub and Josh Turner at the centre of the Brinsworth defence kept the strong front due of Callum Chambers and Christian Rowe at bay and it was Brinsworth that came closest to open the scoring with two chances in the space of as many minutes midway through the first half. First Danny Willis was sent though by Matt Langley, but a defender got back to deny him, and it was yet more good defending by Ball that stopped Langley after being set up by Joe McGuiness. Ball responded and a John Morgan corner was headed over by Lawrence Matthewson and soon after Tom Thornton shot narrowly wide from thirty yards. Matthewson came even closer to grabbing the lead for Ball In the final minute of the first half, but Brinsworth keeper Sean Rockett dived to his right to make a terrific save and the teams went in level at the interval. Half time 0-0 The second half saw Brinsworth soon into there stride and both Lewis Watson and Langley spurned good chances to score, but in the 51st miniute they took the lead when Langley played a lovely ball to Joe McGuiness who in turn played Danny Willis though the middle and he made no mistake from the edge of the box. Two mins later Langley should have doubled the lead after Mikey Hare had played him in only for the keeper to make a fine save. Brinsworth looked to have paid for their missed chances when, just after the hour mark, Ball levelled things up when their leading scorer Callum Chambers glanced a Thornton corner into the net for his tenth goal of the season, but within two minutes, Brinsworth went back in front when Joe McGuiness scored with a spectacular overhead kick from the edge of the box after Ball had failed to clear a corner. Ball went flat out for the equaliser again and pushed John Heritage up front, leaving three at the back, but with just six minutes remaining, they fell further behind when keeper Adam Martin’s loose ball out was picked up by Langley who played the ball quickly out to David Connolly and his square ball across the box was met by Lewis Watson to score in off a post. Ball tried to respond and pushed even more men forward, but they were inevitably caught by a quick break in the final minute as Hare picked up a loose ball and raced into the penalty area before crossing for man of the match Matt Langley to score Brinsworth’s fourth. Final score Brinsworth Whitehill 4 Old Blue Ball 1 The Teams: Brinsworth Whitehill Shaun Rocket, Jack Armstrong, Reece Bridger, Adam Alloub, Josh Turner, Lewis Watson, Ryan Watson, Mikey Hare, Ross Johnson, Danny Willis, Joe McGuiness Subs: Nathan Roebuck, Lewis Carder, Matt Langley, Dave Connolly, Old Blue Ball Adam Martin, Jake Rodley, Tom Goodison, Oliver Matthewson, Marc Peacock, Danny Stead, Tom Thornton, Lawrence Mathewson (capt), Callum Chambers, Christian Rowe, John Morgan, Subs; Liam Ryan, John Heritage, Adam Hall, Adrian Wright, Sean Frawley. Referee: Craig Grundy Despite a Sam Thorpe strike for the home side, the already promoted Division One leaders Oughtibridge WM took another step towards the title with a 7-1 victory at an Aston Swallownest now just kept out of the bottom three by goal difference. David Sheakey pounced on a loose ball to give Oughtibridge the lead. Justin westoby then set Joe Appleyard up to score their second and Danny Clinton quickly added a third. Sheakey then set Clinton up to score his second and it became five when a move started by James Baker and Sean Lee was finished off by Callum Hawley. Matt Cundy knocked in number six when he was first to the ball after a Lee shot had been blocked and Clinton completed both the scoring and his hat-rick with his twentieth goal of the season. Second placed Norton Oaks ‘A’ completed their programme with a 6-2 victory over Junior Cup finalists Southey Social. Oaks took the lead when Danny Reet scored from the edge of the area and Coel Fulton steamed through from midfield to hit a second low into the corner. Southey got back into it before half time when Danny Lindley was felled in the area and John Mellor scored from the spot, but the start of the second half saw Rich Gilham celebrate his return after a six month lay-off due to a head injury to head Oaks’ third. Southey hit back instantly with Todd Guest ghosting in to score, but Oaks stepped up a gear and Reet added two more to complete his hat-trick when he twice found himself one-on-one with the keeper. A Reet corner was then headed into his own net by the unlucky Gaz Lindley to complete the scoring to move Norton seven points clear of the team below them and crucially thirteen points clear of the other teams that can catch them, but they have played as many as seven games more than those teams though, so all they can do now is sit and sweat it out. Fox & Hounds are one of the teams that can catch Norton and they did their chances no harm with a 5-0 victory over local rivals Cobden View. Lewis Turton started it off with a free kick over the wall, but it was Harry ONeill that stole the show with the other four. He drilled his first into the far corner before going through and chipping the keeper ‘Messi style’. The game was barely twenty minutes old when he thundered home a thirty yard volley and he scored his seventeenth of the season after the break with another shot low into the corner. One team out of the promotion reckoning though is Players Lounge Athletic after relegation threatened Loxley completed the double over them with a 1-0 victory. The winner came when Anthony Marshall’s free kick struck the wall and the ball fell kindly for Callum McRury to volley home and after looking doomed just a few weeks ago this third win in a row has given Loxley every chance of avoiding the drop. Ranch also did their chances of avoiding the drop with a 3-1 victory over the bottom club Anston Athletic. Breon Fogarty’s corner saw Richard Berry leap highest to head Ranch into a half time lead and they doubled it after the break when Shannon Marsland met Adam Hadfield’s through ball to score. Joe Denby was then brought down in the area, but Richard Honeyman’s spot kick was well saved by the Anston keeper. A third did eventually come when Ranch’s veteran defender Ian Cooper somehow managed to poke the ball home despite his zimmer frame almost getting in the way! Sean Ebbs scored the goal of the game for Anston, but it was little consolation for a side that must now win their final three games to stand any chance of staying up. DIV 2 - Intake lose out to Crookes, but Hare & Hounds have a Rudd-y good time, while Chapeltown win at last - Two Matt Cowen penalties saw Crookes & District come from behind to beat fellow Division Two promotion candidates Intake Old Boys, while a George Rudd (right) treble helps Hare & Hounds beat Colley. A Carl Andrews double helped leaders The Pheasant to a narrow win at Norton Oaks 'B', while Phoenix stayed third with victory over Steelers. It was a 'red letter' day for Chapeltown RBL as they finally won their first game of the season at Sharrow Vale. Division Two’s top game saw Crookes & District come from behind to beat promotion rivals Intake Old Boys with two controversial penalties. Chris Cottyn gave Crookes a half time lead, but after the break John Higgins left the Crookes defence snookered to score Intake’s equaliser. It looked as if it would be Intake’s day when Russell Hobson put them in front, but Crookes were controversially awarded two penalties after fouls on Cottyn and Matt Cowen slammed them both home to steal the points for Crookes. Leaders The Pheasant were pushed all the way by Norton Oaks ‘B’ before they wrapped up a 4-3 victory. Danny Marshall sidestepped a defender to put The Pheasant in front, but Oaks levelled before half time when Jamie Marshall’s cross was tapped in by Josh Stafford. Carl Andrews restored The Pheasant’s lead after the break, but Stafford levelled a second time from the penalty spot after Otis Thorn had been brought down in the area. The Pheasant went back in front when they were awarded a penalty and Dylan Parrott scored from the spot, and Andrews made it four when his shot was deflected past the Oaks keeper. Oaks didn’t give up though and after Stafford completed a deserved hat-trick, the leaders were forced to hold on to collect the three points. George Rudd also scored a hat-trick as Hare & Hounds consolidated second place with a 3-1 victory over a Colley side that could count themselves unlucky to come away with nothing. Rudd opened the scoring midway through the first half when he met Jake Schofield’s corner with a near post header and he doubled the lead just a minute later when he raced onto Mark Bailey’s through ball. Colley got back into it before half time when Joe Zipfel found himself unmarked at the back post from a corner and after the break they piled the pressure onto the home side in search of an equaliser. Zak Crownshaw blasted over when well placed and Zipfel struck a post when clean through. Hounds keeper Ned Attrill also made a great save to deny Colley before Rudd made the points safe with his third. Phoenix stayed third with a 3-0 victory over Steelers. Kieran Cull produced an extravagant back heel from Brad Hardy’s corner to put Phoenix in front and Cull turned provider when his corner was headed home by Adam Belk. Josh Aston’s through ball then sent Daniel Commander through and although he needed two attempts he completed the scoring with his ninth of the season. It was celebrations all round for Chapeltown RBL after the finally collected their first win of the season with a 4-1 victory at Sharrow Vale. Neil Boote quickly put Chapeltown ahead and Ky Ugrader made it two when he forced the ball home after his first attempt had struck the bar. Sharrow got back into it after the break when they were awarded a penalty and although John Matterson’s spot kick was brilliantly saved by Sean Crothers, Matterson was quick enough to follow up and turn home the rebound. Chapeltown restored their two goal lead with a Joe Moorhouse strike before Sam Walch completed the scoring late on and it would have been five had Ugrader’s back heel not been cleared off the line. |

The game with be played at the Stocksbridge Park Steels stadium at Stocksbridge. Southey Social's and The Pheasant's league fixtures on 20 April are therefore postponed to another date yet to be decided. 16 Mar 2014 - TAYLOR&EMMET SUNDAY JUNIOR CUP - It will be an all-Blades Super Draw final - After both Southey Social and The Pheasant produced terrific performances to win their semi finals, the Taylor&Emmet Sunday Junior Cup Final will, for the first time, be an all-Blades Super Draw affair. With both the Andrews brothers again on target, The Pheasant (left) saw off a Barnsley Sunday League Ardsley Oaks that had previously won every game this season, while a Chris Roberts double helped Southey Social come from behind to beat Woodhouse Junior. Division One Southey Social came from behind to beat Woodhouse Juniors 4-2 and Division Two The Pheasant thrashed Barnsley League Ardsley Oaks 5-1 to win their semi finals to ensure the Taylor&Emmet Sunday Junior Cup Final will, for the first time, be an all-Blades Super Draw affair. The Pheasant entertained the Barnsley Sunday League side Ardsley Oaks that had previously won every game this season and scored over a hundred goals in the process, but it was The Pheasant that took the game to their visitors and they had several chances early in the game and deservedly took the lead after Dylan Parrott effort came back off the post and Dan Williams hammered the rebound past the keeper. A mistake at the back allowed Oaks to level the scores before half time, but that was as good as it got for them as man of the match Parrott created wave after wave of attack. A long throw was headed home by Lee Gillott to put The Pheasant back in front and a powerful header by Shane Andrews doubled their advantage. Carl Andrews made it four when his free kick deceived the Oaks keeper and Craig Mawhood completed the scoring with a neat finish Southey Social fell behind to a penalty after a foul by Sean Needham in the box, but Southey got back on level terms when David Wheeler’s cross to the back post was headed back across goal by John Mellor and Chris Roberts (right) met it with a diving header past the Woodhouse keeper. It wasn’t long before Roberts grabbed his second to put Southey in front and after Mellor had hit the bar with one effort, he made it 3-1 when he curled the ball into the top corner after Dan Ferguson and Danny Lindley had combined to pull the ball back to him on the edge of the area. Woodhouse threw everything at them after the break and only a last ditch tackle by Lee Wilson and a terrific save by Andy Guest kept them at bay, but Woodhouse finally got some reward for their pressure when they scored their second, but Southey quashed any thoughts of a comeback when James MacDonald’s floated cross went over the keeper and into the net. CBC PREM - Bath cleans up to keep Service in the title hunt, but The Vine lose out to Redmires - Andy Bath (left) hit a hat-trick as Civil Service held their nerve to beat Stocksbridge Park Steels 5-3 and stay level on points with leaders Stannington Village. Civil took the lead when Paul Billard’s cross was forced home at the second attempt by Bath and he doubled their lead when he curled an unstoppable shot past the Steels keeper. Steels hit back and Scott Birch produced a deft chip over the Civil keeper to pull one back and they were back on level terms when Adam Todd scored at the back post. Civil were back in front after the break when a terrible mix-up between Steels keeper Stephen Marshall and defender Mike Smith saw the defender turn the ball into his own net. Bath then completed his hat-trick with a low finish from Luke Parwana’s inch perfect pass and although Todd scored his second to narrow the gap, Daniel Campbell set up Wes Bamford to hit Civil’s fifth and complete the scoring. The Vine's title hopes look to over though after they lost at home to a Redmires side helped by two goals from Ben Palmer. James Kirkham met Matt Garnett’s cross to put Redmires ahead and although Christian Nixon met Danny Seaman’s cross to head his first goal for The Vine to level the scores, Palmer met Dave Knaggs’ cross to put Redmires back in front. Palmer then linked up with Knaggs again to hit his second, before Ricky Gregory put Rikki Davidson through to pull one back for The Vine. Nick Hickson restored Redmires’ two goal lead by heading home Dan Bathie’s cross and although Davidson grabbed his second to keep The Vine in the game, the nearest they came to an equaliser was a Jon Warburton shot that forced a good save from the keeper. Chisanga Nshindano (right) scored four as Handsworth Old Boys moved ten points clear of the relegation zone with victory over an Ecclesfield Players Lounge that is left just above the bottom three. Nshindano’s first was cancelled out by Joe Knight, but he put Handsworth back in front when he deflected a Paul Turner shot past the Ecclesfield keeper. Gavin Hunter brought Ecclesfield level a second time, but Dale Moore had Handsworth back in front before the break. Nshindano completed his hat-trick after half time and although Hunter netted his second to put Ecclesfield back in the game, Mario Esposito’s strike restored Handsworth’s two goal lead before Nshindano’s fourth made the final score 6-3. Handsworth Turf looked to be on their way to a much needed three points against Bulls Head when two Tom Crosby corners were headed home by Ben Shackshaft and Carl Bowler, but Bulls Head got back into it after the break when Daniel Bonnick was brought down in the area and Alan Mowforth scored from the spot, and they were level when Mark Bryant hit his first of the season. It still looked like Turf would win it though when Ryan Foster’s cross was dropped by keeper Matt Coates and Ty Wilson scored from an acute angle, but a long punt downfield by John Marples (left) somehow bounced over the head of Liam Richardson in the Turf goal to give Bulls Head a share of the spoils. Hemsworth Villa look increasingly doomed to relegation after a 4-1 defeat by The Park left them ten points away from safety. The game was fairly even until Ryan Campbell set up Calvin Thomas to strike the opener five minutes before half time and just two minutes after the re-start Ali Mitchell doubled The Park’s lead with a free kick. Villa almost pulled one back when James Ireland’s shot was saved at point blank range and Danny Milner pulled another effort wide. The Park made it three when a Jordan Belcher long throw was touched home by Adi Tomlin and although Villa did pull one back when a loose ball from a corner was poked home by Sam Britton, The Park had the final say when Ricky Parsisson tripped Ricardo Stewart in the area and Ryan Dyson scored from the spot. DIV 1 - Clinton double sees Oughtibridge promoted after Loxley shock Fox - With bottom club Loxley grabbing a shock win at promotion chasing Fox & Hounds, it meant that Oughtibridge WM are the first team to gain promotion after a Danny Clinton double gave them victory over Anston Athletic. Clinton was first to react to a loose ball after a scramble in the penalty area to give Oughtibridge a first half lead and after the break Clinton fired his second across the keeper after being set up by Strachan Sampson. Sampson almost added a third when he hit the bar, but it didn’t matter as the Oughtibridge celebrations began. See action from the game below
Loxley’s victory at Fox & Hounds was a real blow to Fox’s promotion dreams, but it gives Loxley real hope that they can make a late burst to safety. With the experience of Geoff Mayfield and Rich Furey back in the side and James Swanton solid as a rock in the centre of their defence, Loxley took a first half lead when Jon Rhodes headed home and they doubled it after the break when Steve Mayfield hammered home a forty yarder. Fox pulled one back with a Jack Watson penalty, but Loxley held on for their win. Aston Swallownest also boosted their survival hopes with a 2-1 victory over a Cobden View that is now six points away from safety. Aston took a first half lead when Ben Winter was brought down in the area and Ross Edwards scored from the spot and Winter provided the cross for David Sills (left) to head home to double it after the break. Dave Hunt provided the opening for Mark Reaney to pull one back for Cobden, but Aston held on to move them three points and three places above the drop zone. Two late Billy Ireland (right) goals gave Norton Oaks 'A' victory at Ranch to keep them second, but it was very close call after Ranch led twice. Richard Berry headed Ranch in front and although it was cancelled out by Robbie Aspinall’s left foot shot, Ranch regained the lead when Berry flicked on for Richard Honeyman to head home. With Ranch keeper Mark Broadhurst stopping everything thrown at him it looked as if they would hold on for a shock win, but with just five minutes remaining Billy Ireland tapped home an equaliser and he kept Norton’s promotion hopes alive when he tapped in their winner with virtually the last kick of the game. Players Lounge Athletic currently lie in the third promotion place, but they now look likely to miss out after a 3-0 defeat at an Old Blue Ball now just three points behind them with five games in hand. Marcus OMalley’s header gave Ball a half time lead and it was doubled after the break when Callum Chambers was brought down in the area and he picked himself up to score from the spot. With Oliver Matthewson outstanding at the back for Ball, Lounge rarely looked like getting back into it and when Sean Frawley beat two defenders to drill home Ball’s third, the contest was over. DIV 2 - Warburton uses his loaf Hounds in the promotion reckoning and Gabbitas keeps Intake in the hunt - With Division Two leaders The Pheasant on cup duty, three of the teams behind them took advantage to close the gap. Hare & Hounds got a shock when Dave Adams put bottom club Chapeltown RBL ahead and although Todd Warburton levell for Hounds before half time, Chapeltown went back in front with a brave header by Neil Boote. Warburton took a pass from Jake Schofield to level things a second time, but when keeper Sean Crothers denied Warburton his hat-trick with a terrific save it looked like Chapeltown might deny Hounds the three points until Joe Troughton picked the perfect time to score his first of the season and win it for Hounds. Just as close was Intake Old Boys’ 1-0 victory at Norton Oaks ‘B’. Even the winner was full of controversy as Tom Gabbitas got onto the end of a ball over the top before lobbing the keeper. The defence claimed the ball had not crossed the line and even some of the Intake players weren’t sure, but the referee was certain and gave what turned out to be the game’s only goal. Crookes & District’s 6-1 victory at Steelers was much more straightforward. Chris Cottyn (left) gave Crookes the lead and man of the match Paul Jackson netted his first of the season to double it. Matt Cowen headed home a third before the break and Crookes confirmed the victory with the same players scoring another one each in the second half. Blake Owen struck his nineteenth goal of the season for Steelers, but it was little more than a consolation. Phoenix's home game with FC Spartak lasted just eleven minutes until an accidental collision saw a Phoenix player suffer a broken leg and the game was abandoned. |
9 Mar 2014 - CBC PREM - Stannington leave it late to go top, but The Vine's progress stalled late goal - Stannington Village regained top spot and now look strong favourites to retain their title after late goals beat previous leaders Civil Service. Worse still for Service was that keeper Carl Whitby (left) suffered a broken leg early in the game. Paul Billard had to take over in goal, but he was relatively untroubled for the first half and much of the second until, with just eighteen minutes left on the clock, Lee Johnstone crossed for Sean Flynn to take a touch and drill it past him to give Stannington the lead. Just four minutes later a foul by Luke Parwana gave Bill Green the opportunity to hit a terrific free kick past the wall and beyond Billard to double Stannington’s lead. Tom Stubbs took over in goal as Billard came out to try to help Service get back into the game and the ploy nearly worked when Stannington keeper Nathan Ryan needed to make a save to stop Service getting back into it. It was Stannington that had the final say though when Sami Eric hit a twenty five yarder in at the near post. The Vine’s title challenge looked to be on course at Stocksbridge Park Steels when Liam Allott smashed a free kick into the top corner after he had been brought down just outside the area. Allott and Matt Ellis went close to extending their lead and although Mitchell Savage, Scott Birch and Kev Davies all went close, The Vine keeper Dan Simpson looked on course for a clean sheet until the final minute when Savage’s corner flew straight into the net to give Steels a share of the points. The Park's title chances look to be over after they twice lost the lead before losing to a Handsworth Old Boys now eight points clear of the relegation zone. Mark Townsend set up Jordan Belcher to give The Park a first half lead and although the second half started with Paul Turner netting an equaliser for Handsworth, The Park went back in front with an Aidy Tomlin strike. Turner was involved when Handsworth hit back a second time as he was brought down in the area and Chisanga Nshindano stepped up to score from the spot and with just five minutes remaining Shane Rollinson (right) completed the turnround when he grabbed the winner for Handsworth. Handsworth Turf helped their chances of avoiding the drop by beating bottom club Hemsworth Villa. Despite dominating the first half, Turf couldn’t make the breakthrough thanks to saves by Villa keeper James Dean from Turf’s new signing Brett Horton and a Tom Crosby free kick. Kieran Gallagher went even closer when he lobbed the ball over Dean, but the ball came back off the post. The second half continued in the same vein and with just five minutes remaining Turf got the goal they deserved when Perry Jackson was brought down in the area and he picked himself up to score from the spot. Villa almost levelled when Jack Waddle’s cross was met by Kyle Hardwick, but his shot was blocked on the line and moments later James Ireland skimmed the bar with his shot. Turf sealed the points in the final minute though when Jackson raced down the wing and crossed for Carl Eaton to score. More action from the game is below:
DIV 1 - Fletcher slices through Brinsworth, while Lounge back into the top three - Tom Fletcher (right) hit a hat-trick and made the others as Oughtibridge WM sliced through Brinsworth Whitehill's perfect home record to go six points clear at the top of Division One with a 5-1 victory. Fletcher gave Oughtibridge a tenth minute lead when he fired home from the edge of the box and Joe Appleyard headed a second from a Fletcher corner. Fletcher was then first to a loose ball in the goalmouth to make it three and he completed his hat-trick with a terrific header. Louis Watson headed one back for Brinsworth, but they knew their perfect home record was gone long before their keeper spilled a Fletcher shot and Danny Clinton scored his seventh goal in as many games for Oughtibridge. Players Lounge Athletic went back into the top three with a 2-1 victory at relegation threatened Cobden View. Danny Marcus’s cross was turned into his own net by a Cobden defender to give Lounge a first half lead and although it was cancelled out after the break when Paul Griffiths his a half volley into the top corner, Alex Evison met an Antony Holmes corner to head Lounge’s winner. One of the biggest threats to Lounge is coming from Old Blue Ball, who, with the help of a Callum Chambers double ended Anston Athletic's four game winning run with a 4-1 victory. An own goal and a Christian Rowe strike gave Ball a two goal half time lead and although the second half started with Jamie Ward pulling one back for the home side from the penalty spot, Ball’s two goal lead was re-established when Chambers also scored from the penalty spot. Man of the match Chambers then made the points absolutely safe with his second. A Jon Rhodes treble helped Loxley to their second win of the season at Southey Social's expense. Rhodes produced an exquisite half volley to put Loxley ahead and this was quickly followed by his second after Mick Smith had taken the ball on his chest before volleying a cross that Rhodes turned into the top corner. The game was as good as over with less than thirty minutes on the clock when Rhodes nicked the ball off Gareth Lindley before advancing to complete his hat-trick. Southey grabbed a lifeline with a Sean Needham strike before the break and Chris Roberts scored a second after the break, but Loxley’s defence managed to stay firm after that to take the points. DIV 2 - The Andrews brothers help The Pheasant widen the gap at the top, while Sharrow hit back for second win - A Carl Andrews (left) treble and one from his brother Shane helped The Pheasant to a 5-0 victory over bottom club Chapeltown RBL to go five points clear at the top. Carl Andrews drilled home a free kick to open the scoring and Shane made it two before half time when he met a Dylan Parrott cross. Craig Mahwood made it three after the break before Carl Andrews took advantage of a mix-up by the Chapeltown defence for his second and he completed his hat-trick with a late penalty. Despite falling behind to Jan Horvath’s eighteenth goal of the season, Sharrow Vale hit back to beat FC Spartak 3-1 for their second win of the season. Matt Lancashire hit Vale’s equaliser before Tom Wray’s cross was headed home by Joe Lovatt to put Vale in front. The home side then made the points safe when Ivan Merrill met Wray’s free kick with a glancing header past the Spartak keeper. |
2 Mar 2014 - CBC PREM - Top three all win, while Super Mario earns Handsworth derby honours - The CBC Premier’s top three, Civil Service, Stannington Village and The Vine, all won to keep the title race boiling nicely. Leaders Civil Service entertained in-form Redmires and despite being on the back foot for much of the first half, Service took an interval lead when Ben Brown’s shot was blocked and Gregg Dumpleton pounced to score his first goal for over two years. After the break Service doubled their lead when Gavin Wills smashed home a twenty five yard free kick and although Redmires pulled one back with a James Kirkham strike, Service held on to stay three points clear. Stannington Village found their hosts Bulls Head in their best form for many weeks and they needed to be at their best to take the points. Robin Elliott had a header tipped over and it was almost half time before Stannington got their noses in front when Lee Johnstone sent Sami Eric down the wing before he cut inside to provide the perfect pass for Gavin Davis (right) to score. Stannington secured the points in the second half when Dean Jepson got onto the end of Bill Green’s long throw to steer the ball past the Bulls Head keeper. The Vine kept up with the top two with a 4-1 victory over Hemsworth Villa. Matt Ellis met Craig Woolley’s flick on to open the scoring and he grabbed his second when he picked up the pieces after Rikki Davidson forced a great save out of the Villa keeper. Liam Allott then beat two men before crossing for Brent Heeley (left) to score the goal that kept up his record of scoring in every one of his nine seasons with The Vine. Villa tried to respond and after Chris Waddle had hit the bar they pulled one back when Jack House was brought down in the area and he picked himself up to score from the spot. The Vine made sure there would be no comeback though as man of the match Allott beat his man on the edge of the area before drilling home his side’s fourth. Action from the game is shown below:
Stocksbridge Park Steels lost ground though as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Ecclesfield Players Lounge for a second consecutive week. It looked good for Steels when Scott Birch netted from George Orrell’s set up and Mark Woodcock’s deflected shot went in after playing a one-two with Mitchell Savage, but Ecclesfield showed they weren’t out of the game when Mark Groves hit the bar and Danny Turner missed two good chances. They finally got their reward when Tom Bartholamew pulled one back and they took a deserved share of the points when man of the match Joe Knight equalised with his third of the season. The Park stayed on the fringes of the title race as a Mark Townsend treble helped to them to a 5-2 victory over Woodhouse Angel. Townsend headed home Aaron Walker’s cross to put The Park ahead and Townsend doubled that lead when he met Ryan Campbell’s cross. Matt Parks quickly pulled one back for Angel, but just a minute later Campbell was the provider again for Jordan Belcher to restore The Park’s two goal lead. After the break Nathaniel Foster hammered home a loose ball in the box to make it 4-1 and although Gareth Simons scored a second for Angel from the penalty spot after Dave Kippax had been pulled back, it was The Park and Townsend that had the final say when he completed his hat-trick from the spot after they had been awarded a penalty. Handsworth Turf drew first blood in the derby against Handsworth Old Boys, but Mario Esposito (right) was the Old Boys two goal hero as they hit back to take the bragging rights with a 5-1 win. Esposito goals either side of one from Shane Rollinson gave the Old Boys a 3-1 half time lead and although Eaton nearly grabbed a second when his header hit the post and Kieran Gallagher twice went close, further goals for Paul Turner and a Chisanga Nshindano penalty saw the Old Boys comfortably home and five points clear of the relegation zone. DIV 1 - Sampson too strong for Southey and a Johnson treble keeps Brinsworth in the hunt , but all the others drop points - A Strachan Sampson double helped Division One leaders Oughtibridge WM to victory at Southey Social and a Ross Johnson treble helped Brinsworth Whitehill to victory at Aston Swallownest, but the other promotion challengers all dropped points, as Fox & Hounds drew with Players Lounge Athletic and Old Blue Ball drew with Norton Oaks 'A'. Although Oughtibridge almost took the lead when the ball came back off a post, only a brilliant save by their keeper stopped Sean Needham putting Southey in front. Midway through the first half Strachan Sampson gave Oughtibridge the lead with an unstoppable thirty five yard free kick and they nearly doubled it when Joe Appleyard’s header hit the post, but both John Mellor and Danny Lindley wasted good chances for Southey. Oughtibridge took control after the break when Danny Clinton lobbed the keeper for his fourteenth goal of the season, but Southey hit back when Chris Roberts scored after Needham’s shot had come back off the post. They pushed for an equaliser, but were inevitably caught on the break when man of the match Sampson added his second and Strachan then turned provider with a cross for Justin Westoby to hit Oughtibridge’s fourth. Brinsworth Whitehill improved their promotion chances with a 4-2 win at Aston Swallownest. Ross Johnson started his spree off when he found the bottom corner after the ball had rebounded off a defender to him and he soon added a second when he headed home Danny Willis’s cross. Johnson completed his first half hat-trick when he took a long ball on his chest before sliding it past the keeper and the second half started with Willis hitting their fourth from Mikey Hare’s cross. Aston did their best to get back into the game and two David Sills strikes made the visitors defence a little jittery, but they held on without any further damage. Second place Norton Oaks ‘A’ took the lead at promotion rivals Old Blue Ball when Danny Reet smashed the ball into the top corner from Billy Ireland’s cross, but Ball grabbed a share of the spoils in the second half when Christian Rowe took the ball fifty yards before squaring it for man of the match Callum Chambers to score the equaliser. Fourth place Players Lounge Athletic and fifth place Fox & Hounds also let points slip when they drew 2-2 with each other. A quick break saw Steve Davies give Fox the lead, but Lounge levelled before half time when John Conley’s corner flew straight in. After the break Lounge took the lead when David Ibbotson was pulled to the ground and he got up to score from the spot, despite scuffing his shot. Driven on by man of the match Adam Chambers, Fox didn’t give up and grabbed a share of the spoils when leading scorer Harry ONeill bundled the ball home with the help of a couple of deflections. The bottom two Loxley and Cobden View met each other and despite it being a game that both really needed to win, it finished up in the 1-1 draw that helps neither of them. Mark Hoyle smashed a thirty yarder in off the bar to give Cobden the lead, but just a minute later the ball hit an arm in the Cobden penalty area and Tim Pitt stepped up to level. After that Loxley’s Jon Rhodes hit a post and Tom Storey went close for them, but it remained level to the end. Anston Athletic did their chances no harm at all when they came from two down at half time to beat Ranch 3-2 for a fourth straight win. Ben Hartley broke clear to square the ball for his brother Tom to give Ranch the lead and they looked to be heading for victory when a corner to the back post was headed back by Carl Pearce for Richard Honeyman to score, but it was a completely different story after the break. Will Hutchinson pulled one back for Anston and Rob Deakin levelled before Jamie Webster forced the ball home to give his side an unlikely win. DIV 2 - Fothergill double see The Pheasant take charge of the title race, while Hare & Hounds go second - In Division Two, a Lewis Fothergill double helped The Pheasant to victory over their main Division Two title rivals Intake Old Boys. Fothergill gave The Pheasant a half time lead and he doubled it after the break when he intercepted a back pass and rounded the keeper to score. The Pheasant completed the scoring when Dylan Parrott carried the ball from the half way line before beating the keeper with an angled shot. Hare & Hounds went second after coming from behind to beat Sharrow Vale. Sharrow started much the better and took the lead when Tom Wray got onto the end of Nick Glossop’s through ball to score. It stayed like that until the break and Sharrow almost doubled it after half time when they had one cleared off the line. That seemed to wake Hounds up and George Rudd grabbed an equaliser before Adam Caywood put them ahead. Sharrow tried to get back into it, but they made certain that Hounds would take the points when a defender turned the ball into his own net. Phoenix slipped to third after losing a two goal lead in a 2-2 draw with Colley. Liam Brookfield finished a mazy run by scoring at the second attempt to give Phoenix the lead and Nicky Shaw doubled it soon after, but just before the break Colley’s Jo Zipfel found the bottom corner to put his side right back into the game. Colley then produced an impressive second half and deservedly took a point when Corey Stewart scored with a glancing header from Richie Whitworth’s cross. Despite a man of the match performance by Chapeltown RBL’s keeper Sean Crowther and an early goal by Jamie Wathen, Jan Horvath scored four and Marek Ziga another as FC Spartak hit back to win 5-1. |
