25 March - League Meeting on Monday 26 March - Will all clubs please note that the League Meeting at Bramall Lane has been switched from the normal venue and will now be in the Platinum Suite - the entrance to it is next to the Players Entrance in the main car park at Bramall Lane.

25 March - Referee Roger Evans - The League was very shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden death of referee Roger Evans. Roger was Chairman of the Sheffield Referees Association and one of the regular referees of games on both Saturdays and Sundays. Roger refereed our Macron Cup Final at Bramall Lane in 2006 - see picture right - and as well as being known as a very good referee, everyone recognised him as a very good man. He will be very sadly missed and our thoughts go out to his family and very many friends.

25 March - MACRON CUP SEMI FINALS - The Park make history, while Service keep double hopes alive - The Park went into their Macron Cup semi final against CBC Premier Pitsmoor Royal Oak in the knowledge that victory would not only take them to a Bramall Lane Cup Final, but also create history by becoming the first Division Two side to reach the final.

The Park started quickly and went close when Mark Townsend’s superb free kick hit the outside of a post with Pitsmoor keeper Nick Milnes well beaten, but after that Pitsmoor began to dictate the game and both Gavin Davis and Stacey Shariff went close and they went into the break in front after Adam Collins handled in the area and Shariff slammed home the penalty.

Pitsmoor were dealt a blow at half time when Davis had to give way to injury, but they received a boost within five seconds of the re-start when Shariff pounced on an error by Ryan Marshall to coolly roll the ball past The Park keeper Sam Kirk. It looked as if the CBC Premier side would go on to win it, but The Park winger Tony Gurnhill started to cause them trouble and after a good work down the wing he crossed for sub Callum Harrison to tap home at the back post.

That gave The Park all the encouragement they needed and Gurnhill combined with Townsend before crossing for Dan Robinson to head home the equaliser. Pitsmoor reacted and when Scott Spjazer crossed Shariff had a real chance to win it, but blasted over the bar. Leon Stocks also went close for Pitsmoor, but neither side could find a winner and the game went to extra time.

Midway through the first half of extra time The Park took the lead for the first time and man-of-the-match Gurnhill was again involved. He collected Ryan Marsh’s throw before crossing for Adam Collins to make up for his earlier mistake by sliding the ball just inside the post (pictured left below). Harrison then might have made it safe with a half chance, but in the second period of extra time Pitsmoor began to push The Park back and when Rob Shelley crossed, Stocks headed home the equaliser (pictured right below) to take the tie to penalties.

Mark Townsend and Luke Fletcher confidently put away the first penalties for either side, but when Nick Milnes saved Dan Robinson’s spot kick it was advantage to Pitsmoor. Their joy was short-lived though as this time Sam Kirk saved Shariff’s spot kick and after Gurnhill confidently scored his penalty, Kirk was again the hero by saving Shelley’s penalty. Jordan Bletcher and Leon Stocks then both scored, meaning that Callum Harrison could win it for The Park and he made no mistake (pictured left) as The Park players and fans celebrated.

The Park will meet holders Civil Service in the final after they won the battle of the CBC Premier’s top two against The Vine with a second half goal from skipper Ben Brown. There was little between the sides for much of the game, although Dan Bateman should perhaps have given The Vine the lead when he raced through only to shoot wide. Service began to take control in the second half and from a corner Brown rose above everyone to power home an unstoppable header past The Vine keeper James Marshall (pictured right). After that defences remained on top and it was Service that went through to keep their League and Cup double hopes alive, while The Vine experienced the heartache of a fourth semi final defeat in six years.

CBC PREM - Village People stay in title hunt - Stannington Village stayed in the CBC Premier title hunt with a 5-1 demolition of a Handsworth Turf looking in further danger of the drop. After a Jon Wall double put Stannington in charge, Turf pulled one back with a Carl Eaton penalty after a Kieran Gallagher shot was handled in the area. The second half belonged to Stannington though and further goals from Savage, Bill Green and Sami Eric sealed the win and had it not been for a terrific display by Turf keeper Jamie King it would have been many more. Turf now have just two games left to avoid the drop and they may need to win them both.

Ecclesfield Players Lounge are still in big danger after a home defeat by Laycock Sports. Ecclesfield started well and Craig Senior headed them in front, but Luke Glaves and Nick Owen strikes saw Laycocks go into the half time break in front. Some poor defending allowed Owen to score his second and a Sam reed solo goal seemed to have put Laycocks out of sight, but Ecllesfield rallied and after man-of-the-match Dave France pulled one back from the edge of the area, Ryan Keeney hit their third from the penalty spot after Danny Turner had been felled. Turner missed a half chance near the end, but it wasn’t to be and Ecclesfield remain in the drop zone. Both sides praised referee Mick Firth for his performance.

Redmires are just a point from safety after a Dave Knaggs (pictured left) inspired win at home win over Southey Social. Redmires keeper had to make a good save in the opening minute to stop his side falling behind, but after that Southey, without all of their normal back four, found it hard to contain Redmires and Knaggs in particular. Nick Hickson headed home a free kick to put Redmires in front and after Knaggs was felled in the area Dave Elliott doubled their lead from the spot before half time. Todd Guest pulled one back soon after the break, but Knaggs quickly restored Redmires two goal lead and set up a late fourth for James OConnell.

Hemsworth Villa are just one more defeat away from the drop after defeat at Stocksbridge Park Steels. Pete Burgin almost gave Villa the lead only for his shot to come back off the bar, and Nathan Platts and Lee Taylor both went close. Steels then forced Ralph Starkey into a good save, but when Adam Todd crossed for Mitchell Savage, although Starkey saved his first shot, Savage followed up to give Steels a half time lead. Steels took charge after the break with two from Todd and Phil Cookson added a late fourth.

DIV 1 - Bulls Head stutter, but become the first club to gain promotion -

Despite being held at home by relegation threatened Ranch, Division One leaders Bulls Head became the first team to guarantee promotion this season and the day got even better for them with the news that their main title rivals Queens Ground were beaten at Niagara. Ranch worked hard to restrict the leaders and when Richard Berry gave Ranch the lead in the second half it looked like it would be enough until tragedy struck as Oliver Whittaker headed the ball into his own goal to give Bull the point that takes them up.

Bulls title hopes got even stronger as one of their main rivals, Queens Ground, slid to defeat at Niagara. After a goalless first half Queens went in front with an Ada Tomlin goal, but Niagara still have an outside chance of promotion and fought back with a Danny Bainbridge strike before taking all three points with a Simon Staniforth penalty after he had been brought down in the area.

Second place Fairbank-Rhodes kept their hopes alive, but only just against a weakened Throstles. James Stones’ free kick gave Throstles a first half lead, but the second half saw Matt Hodgett score twice from close range to put Fairbank in front. Oliver West then levelled for Throstles, but with Mitchell Robinson driving Fairbank forward, they snatched a late winner with another close range strike by Joe Knight.

Aston Swallownest stayed in promotion contention as David Sills (pictured right) hit five in a big win over Brinsworth Whitehill. Billy Evans also hit two and Ian Draper, Scott McCormack and Sam Llewellyn one each. Jamie Radford hit a consolation for Brinsworth who deserved a great deal of credit for not letting their heads go down. Action from the game is below.

DIV 2 - Handsworth back on top, but Oughtibridge and Ball keep pace with them -

A first half Mario Esposito double helped Handsworth Old Boys to victory over Sharrow Vale and back to the top of Division Two. Shields pulled one back for Sharrow, but Shane Rowlinson headed home a corner to confirm the points and top spot for Handsworth.

Oughtibridge Village and Old Blue Ball kept the pressure on them though with victories over Colley WMC and Junior Blades. Lee Smith opened the scoring for Oughtibridge and Ali Mitchell netted their second when his penalty was saved but rebounded to him to score at the second attempt. Justin Weston added a third from the edge of the area and although Chris Hunt scored one for Colley with a free kick, it was never going to be enough. Christian Rowe and Callum Chambers gave Old Blue Ball a two goal lead at Junior Blades and although the Blades pulled one back before half time that was the end of the scoring.

Hollin Bush's good form continued as Cole Starkes and Kevin Bly (pictured left) doubles helped them to victory over Players Lounge. Scott Harrison gave Players Lounge the lead, but a foul by Anthony Holmes allowed Cole Starkes to score from the spot to level. Bly had Bush in front by half time and he hit a second in the second half along with another penalty by Starkes and a fith from Owen Clark. Matt West gave Crookes & District the lead at home against Chapeltown RBL, but Sam Walsh strikes either side of the interval had Chapeltown in front until Mike Dobson levelled for Crookes. Dobson and Nick Dahlin began to dominate midfield and their efforts were rewarded when Nathan Ashforth crossed for Shaun Hill to bundle home Crookes’ winner.

18 March - CBC PREM - Billard treble keeps Service in charge - Paul Billard's (pictured left) second half hat-trick helped Civil Service beat Hemsworth Villa and stay in charge of the CBC Premier title race. Villa, the bottom club, were giving a good account of themselves and twice went close through Luke Marshall and new signing Wayne Garrity, but, just as it has done for most of the season, luck deserted them and a bizarre own goal by Russ Westby put the league leaders in front. A slip by Rob Smith then allowed Lee Wild to score a second for Service before half time. After the break, with Tom Stubbs pulling the strings in midfield, Service took charge as Billard helped himself to a hat-trick before Garrity grabbed a consolation for Villa. Further action from the game is below.

A Dan Bateman treble at Redmires kept The Vine second, but it had been a very even contest in a goalless first half. After the break though The Vine took control. Bateman headed home a Will Blakeney cross before Rikki Davidson added a second. Blakeney set up another for Bateman and he completed his hat-trick from a Davidson cross.

Luke Parwana's display and goal helped Pitsmoor Royal Oak to victory over Stocksbridge Park Steels and out of the bottom three. Stocksbridge struck first when Matt Jessermino’s speculative twenty five yard shot beat the keeper, but Pitsmoor soon levelled when Scott Spjazer set Stacy Shariff up and they took the lead before half time with Parwana’s goal. Steels levelled through Mitchell Savage soon after the break, but their joy was short-lived as Spjazer headed Pitsmoor back in front just thirty seconds later. Both sides had chances after that, but it was Pitsmoor that clinched it with a Leon Stocks header.

Handsworth Turf climbed out of the bottom two thanks to a 4-4 draw with Laycock Sports, but it would have been better but for Brett Douglas's late equaliser for Laycocks. Turf should have taken the lead when they were awarded a penalty, but Laycocks stand-in keeper Ryan Collier made a brilliant save from Joe France’s spot kick. Nick Owen then showed him how to take a penalty to give Laycocks the lead and a brilliant solo run saw Douglas add a second. Turf got back into it when Carl Eaton’s cross was flicked on by France for Ben Shackshaft to score, but Laycocks restored their two goal advantage after the break with Owen’s second of the game.

Turf rolled their sleeves up and hit back when man-of-the-match Keiran Gallagher burst from midfield to score and they equalised when a corner was turned into his own net by a defender. When France then headed them in front it looked as if three precious points was coming Turf’s way, but Douglas netted his second to cut short their celebrations and he almost won it for Laycocks in the dying seconds. Both teams were full of praise for referee Paul Evans.

DIV 1 - Queens make up ground, but Aston stutter - In Division One, Adrian Tomlin (pictured right) scored twice to help Queens Ground to victory over Colley FC and keep their title hopes alive. Nat Foster gave Queens an early lead before Tomlin scored his first in a first half Queens dominated. Colley improved after the break and gave the home defence quite a few scares, but Tomlin added a third for Queens in the last minute.

Aston Swallownest's promotion bid took a blow when they were held by Throstles. David Sills goal and Ross Edwards audacious lob from thirty five yards brought Aston’s goals, but they were cancelled out by one from Ryan Lawson and one from Liam Bonnick.

Woodhouse Angel improved their hopes of avoiding the drop with a hard won victory at fellow relegation strugglers Loxley. Matt Parks put Angel in front, but a handball in the area allowed Geoff Mayfield to equalise from the spot. Luke Browse put Angel back in front before half time, but Loxley levelled again in the second half when Mick Smith’s cross was turned into his own net by Nick Hague. Angel got their noses in front a third time when Kirk Briddon fired home and this time Loxley couldn’t find a response and they are now just two points above Angel, who have a game in hand on them.

DIV 2 - The Park gain revenge over Ball, while Clark hits four for Bush - With Handsworth Old Boys game postponed, The Park returned to the top of Division Two when they gained revenge for their defeat by Old Blue Ball the previous week. Ball contributed to their own downfall when their keeper Adam Martin saw red for bringing down an attacker outside the area and they were punished further when Scott Dunkerley gave The Park the lead from the free kick. Callum Chambers briefly levelled for Ball, but Mark Townsend soon had The Park back in front and they took charge of the game with Ricardo Stewart adding a third and Josh Ramsden heading home a fourth before half time.

Ball came out strongly for the second half and pulled two back through Chambers and Tom Goodison and for a while it looked like they might grab an unlikely point, but the came was finally settled when The Park were awarded a penalty and David Nash scored from the spot.

Cole Starkes headed Hollin Bush in front at home against Highfield Old Crown to start off a real goal fest. Owen Clark (pictured left) added four more for Bush, along with two for Simon Major and one for Liam Cavill. Although Crown responded with two each for Andy Theakston and Rob Bidwell, Bush ran out 8-4 winners. No such drama at Players Lounge Athletic as just a single Chris Hunt goal gave Colley WMC all three points. It also needed a five star showing from Colley’s stand in keeper Gary West to earn his side the points. After a goalless first half at Crookes & District, Junior Blades took the lead with a Drew Pearson header, but with Greg McLennan driving the home side forward, Matt West’s swerving shot eventually earned Crookes a share of the points.

11 March 2012

In the CBC Premier Division Pitsmoor Royal Oak took an early lead against Stocksbridge Park Steels with an edge of the box strike from Gavin Davis, but a shot into the top corner from Mitchell Savage brought Steels level before the break. After the break James Pugh brought down the Steels’ striker Adam Todd who converted the penalty. Oak were awarded a penalty after Davis was brought down but Craig Graham missed the chance to level and was punished when Ryan Cockayne followed up his own shot to make it 3-1. Rob Shelley hit a great shot into the top corner for Oak, but they couldn’t get that vital equaliser.

Bottom club Hemsworth Villa played their best for a while but ran out 5-3 losers to third placed The Vine. Villa had taken a 2-0 lead courtesy of a Pete Burgin goal and a penalty from Russell Westby after Marcus Jepson was brought down. Slow but sure The Vine began to get on top and Villa’s defensive frailties showed again as Richi Davidson ran on to a pass from Dan Bateman to reduce the arrears and then Brent Heeley equalised following a rebounded shot from Will Blakeney. Jack Hoffren then hit a curling shot from the edge of the box to put Vine ahead, Villa came back with a Mark Hopkinson header, but Dan Bateman made things safe for The Vine near the finish.

A fast start by Laycocks saw them take a 2-0 lead against Southey Social with a Nick Owen header and a Brett Douglas scorcher from 25 yards. Southey hit back however, for John Mellor to capitalise on a Danny Lindley cross at the far post. They scored almost a repeat, but with this time Rob Womack reaching Lindley’s cross to equalise. Lindley’s almost one man show continued with him scoring with two headers to put Southey well in front after the break and Owen pulling one back for Laycocks towards the end.

Redmires were the day’s top scorers beating Ecclesfield Players Lounge 8-1. They were 5-0 at half time with some terrific goals from Dave Knaggs 2 Sean Downing 2 and Nick Hickson. It looked like Ecclesfield might try to stage a fight back when Danny Turner scored soon after the break, but this was soon dispelled when Hickson hit a great shot from outside the area and Knaggs rifled another one home. Sub Mikey Taylor completed the rout to give Redmires their biggest ever win.

In Division 1, two teams vying for promotion Aston Swallownest and Queens Ground battled out a hard fought game with Aston just victorious. Ian Draper scored early on for Aston with a good lob over the keeper, then David Sills scored a similar goal to put Aston two up from outside of the box. Ryan Mills pulled one back for Queens before the break. In the second half both Draper and Sills grabbed another each with Nick Galloway and a Danny Stead volley from the edge of the box making it a close encounter. Action from the game is below.

Fairbanks Rhodes kept up their push for promotion with a comfortable win over Loxley with Joe Knight netting following a goalmouth scramble early on, then Scott Whittington added a second to make it 2-0 at half time. He added a third when latching on to a through ball.

Leaders Bulls Head increased their lead with a 5-1 home win against lowly Anston Athletic. They scored in their first attack when Chris Peel lobbed the keeper and he added a second from close in. Nick Ash made it 3-0 before the break with a left foot volley and made it 4-0 following up a rebound. Aston pulled one back before Lee Smith added a fifth for the leaders before the end.

Niagara Had a resounding win against Colley with Danny Bainbridge grabbing two, the best coming with a right foot volley from a cross by Craig Foster. Niagara’s other goals were scored by man of the match Ben Dronfield and Paul Cadman.

On Friday night, Throstles just about overcame Colley in a close match . Colley had led twice in the first half with goals from Lee Campbell (a fine strike from the edge of the box) and a similar effort from Dan Ferguson but Throstles fought back and eventually won the match 4-3 despite a Carl Lomas strike for Colley.

Throstles added another victory on Sunday when overcoming Ranch 3-0 to complete a nice double win to lift them up the table.

The Division Two top of the table clash saw Old Blue Ball race into an early lead through Christian Rowe but leaders The Park equalised when Jack Ridge met a cross by Josh Ransom. After the break, Ball took the lead when Callum Chambers converted a penalty and he added another when pouncing on a through ball from Ridge to chip the keeper. The Park pulled one back through Ricardo Stewart before man of the match Marcus O’Malley beat the wall near the end to make it 4-2.

Colley WMC and Chapeltown RBL fought out a hard fought match on a bumpy pitch and it ended all square at 1-1. Lindon Fletcher having his first game back after a 14 month injury scored to put Colley one up at half time with a header from a corner. After the break RBL fought back and a Sam Walsh found man of the match Joe Cross and he gave the keeper no chance from close in to equalise. Fletcher could have won it near the end when another header struck the bar, but the honours finished evens.

Handsworth OB kept up their challenge for promotion with a 2-1 home defeat of Players Lounge having taken a 2-0 lead at half time courtesy of goals by Dave Turner and a Chris James penalty. Players Lounge made a fight of it in the second half as Scott Harrison scored on his debut.

Hollin Bush had a resounding win against strugglers Highfield Old Crown with Owen Clark grabbing a hat trick, Kevin Bly and own goal and 25 yard screamer from Matt Dickinson. Gary Wilkins and Matt Sallah scored in reply for Highfield.

Crookes and District led Junior Blades 1-0 at half time thanks to a Matt Price strike and followed up with a deflected goal from man of the match Dale Vella. Crookes made the game safe with a shot from Sam Firth which went into the top corner of the net.

Oughtibridge Village kept up their challenge with a 7-1 demolition of bottom club Sharrow Vale who put up a game fight but were hit with a hat trick form Jordan Broadbent, Tom Fletcher, Lee Smith, Lee Bridge and a tremendous strike from David Buckley.

4 March 2012

Civil Service increased their lead at the top of the Premier Division with a comfortable win over visitors Laycocks Sports after racing into a 3 – 0 half-time lead with goals from Adam Firth, Gavin Wills and a 3rd from Firth. It looked all over for Laycocks but they came out fighting in the 2nd half as Service relaxed and pegged the score back courtesy of Sam Read and Luke Graves. This spurred Service on to increase the pressure and they took control again with a Wes Bamford header and a Ben Brown strike.

Struggling FC Handsworth Turf suffered an early blow when Danny Turner scored for Eccelsfield Players Lounge in the first minute but they quickly recovered for Leon Simmonite to grab an equaliser. In an end to end game a sloppy back pass by Keiran Gallagher resulted in a Players Lounge player being brought down and Ryan Keeney made no mistake from the spot. Both Joe France and Gallagher hit the crossbar before another penalty gave Joe France the opportunity to score for Turf which he duly did. There were no further scores after the break and both teams were praised by the referee Kevin Bridges for their efforts on a difficult pitch.

A relegation clash saw bottom club Hemsworth Villa fighting vainly but being defeated by the team above them in the league, Pitsmoor Royal Oak. Oak’s goals, both scored in the first half courtesy of a Craig Graham penalty and a scrambled goal from Delroy Elliot. Leon Stocks hit the post for Oak and towards the end Villa nearly scored with a Russell Westby header which hit the post and Wayne Garrity shot which hit the post late on, but in truth Oak fully deserved their win.

Redmires had to make late changes to their line up and this contributed to a flying start for Stocksbridge Park Steel who were two up after 15 minutes through a Scott Birch double, but Redmires fought back and after several near misses Luke Siggs scored to pull one back before half time. With Dave Knaggs a constant threat to Steel’s defenders, Redmires got on top and although Steels were dangerous on the break it was Redmires who had the better chances. A good battle for supremacy went on, but it was not until the final minutes that Dave Knaggs latched onto a through ball to crash home the equaliser for Redmires.

In the other match in the Premier, The Vine were two up at half time away against Southey Social with two goals from Dan Bateman, the first following a long throw from Chris Shirtcliffe and the second a through ball from Andrew Marsh to Ricky Davidson whose shot was spilled by the keeper, which Bateman pounced on to score. John Mellor got one back for Southey before the break but then missed a sitter. Southey had lots of possession but were unable to capitalise on it and with 15 minutes to go Davidson hit an exquisite chip over the keeper to seal the match.

In Division One, Bulls Head increased their lead in the table with an away win against Aston Swallownest, who had led with a goal from David Sills. Bull then led until Ryan Hall equalised, but after Bull then went 4-2 up, they had a nervous finish after a late penalty by Ross Edwards after Andy Peters was fouled made it 4-3. Well refereed by Mick Firth!

Queens Ground continued their push for promotion with a 7-1 trouncing of lowly Anston Athletic courtesy of goals from Nathaniel Foster (2) Scott Smith, Jamie Cherry, Adi Tomlin and Tom Bermingham and the best of all an overhead kick from Danny Stead.

Niagara led 1-0 at half time until Tom Hartley hit a great shot from the edge of the box to equalise for Ranch and it looked like Ranch may go on to win the game, but Niagara hit them on the break to grab a 2nd half winner. Scorers for Niagara were Ben Dronfield and the winner from Daniel Bonic.

Bottom club Brinsworth Whitehill suffered another heavy defeat this time at the hands of a rampant Woodhouse Angel, the team above them in the League. Scorers for Angel were 5 from Matt Parks, Kirk Briddon, Nick Hague, Luke Browse, Gareth Simons and Lee Marshall.

The other match in Division One between Throstles and Colley had to be abandoned at half time after the pitch became unplayable.

In Division Two, Handsworth Old Boys continued their push for a return to Division Two with a 3-1 away win at Colley WMC with goals from Chris James, Phil Nskindano and Liam Parnell, with Paul Dawson grabbing Colley’s consolation.

Bottom club Chapeltown RBL moved off the bottom with a resounding 8-2 win over Highfield Old Crown who fell away in the second half after being 2-1 down at half time. David Lazenby scored a hat trick for RBL and the other scorers were Ben Palmer, Matthew Taylor, David Hattersley, Josh Shillito and the best a stunning 25 yard strike by Craig Gibson. Keeper Craig Short had a fine game for RBL.

Junior Blades and Hollin Bush fought out a dour battle in atrocious conditions and just when a goalless draw looked likely Hollin Bank scored in the last minute of the match. Adam Hardwick was ‘Man of the Match’ for Blades.

Oughtibridge Village kept up their challenge for promotion with a 4-1 win over lowly Players Lounge, where an early goalkeeping error cost them the first goal and they were then hit with 3 quick goals. They kept the score to that until Scott Marcus hit a great shot into the top corner to earn a consolation goal for Players Lounge. Ace goalscorer Adie Mitchell scored all four of Village’s goals.

Leaders The Park had a comfortable away win at lowly Sharrow Vale with Mark Townsend notching three goals including a great run which took him past several players. Ricardo Stewart had scored in the first half and Callun Harrison added a fifth in the 2nd half.

Old Blue Ball still in contention for a promotion place overcame Crookes and District in a close fought game. Ball had scored in their first attack and Chris Cottyn equalised before the break. Ball scored two quick goals to poach a 3-1 lead before Mike Botson pulled one back. Ball scored again and despite a late goal from Matt West Crookes couldn’t get back on level terms. Mike Daley and Nick Hickton both had good games for Crookes.
