27 Sept - CBC Premier Therm-at-last as Rob puts skids under Laycocks

An early Rob Gardiner (pictured left) strike proved enough to end Laycock Sports unbeaten start and gave Millhouses Thermolast their first win of the season. The winner came after just thirteen minutes when Gardiner's deft flick from a corner found the net. After that Millhouses had to give a real backs to the wall performance, but the nearest Laycock's came to levelling was a John Kilcoyne effort that clipped a post.

Two Adam Todd (pictured right) strikes helped Stocksbridge Park Steels to their first win and revenge for last season's Macron Cup defeat by Civil Service. Steels were ahead in the first minute and although Gareth Griffiths equalised through Gareth Griffiths, Steels were back in front by the break when Todd scored from the penalty spot. After the break, Kevin Davies and Ross Walker extended Steels lead before Matt Meaney netted Service's second, but only a great performance by Service keeper Steve Warrington stopped them losing by many more.

Ecclesfield 147 extended their lead at the top to six points as a Gavin Hunter (pictured left) double helped them come from behind to beat Redmires. Luke Siggs gave Redmires a half time lead, but 147 were unstoppable in the second half. Hunter converted a cross from brother Kevan to level and he then played a neat one-two with Craig Senior to put 147 ahead before he then turned provider for Senior to net the clincher.

Stannington Village climbed to second after two Joe Barker strikes helped them to victory over Hemsworth Villa. The game had been fairly even until Barker produced a stunning strike on the half hour and as Stannington took control, he added a second before the break. Sean Flynn crossed for Ali Mitchell to keep his impressive goal record going for a third, before Villa's Russ Westby scored with a free kick. Action from the game is below:

Yew Tree maintained their record as the great entertainers as doubles from Richard Gill and Scott Birch ended The Vine's unbeaten start. Richard Gill scrambled home the opener for Tree and although Rikki Davidson soon levelled, a Scott Birch strike had Tree back in front by the interval. Birch beat two players before lobbing the keeper for Tree's third soon after the break and although Davidson brought The Vine back into the game with a header, Gill scored with a half volley to restore Tree's two goal lead. They needed it as well as Ricky Gregory bravely headed a third for The Vine, but they couldn't quite force an  equaliser. Action from the game is left.

Division One - Szpajer leaves it late to keep Oak top, while Bull can't keep up with Jones

A last gasp Scott Szpajer (pictured right) goal gave leaders Pitsmoor Royal Oak victory at Niagara. Oak had to start the game without seven regulars and they struggled to make any impression against a Niagara side that can count themselves very unlucky. Just when it seemed that the home side would get something from the game, Szpajer grabbed the winner with the last kick of the game.

Ranch climbed to third with victory at Anvil. Ranch took the lead when Steve Batty met a Graham Foggerty corner with a left foot volley, but following a mix-up between Carl Pearce and Ian Cooper, Anvil hit back to level through Matt Asher before the break. Ranch gained control in the second half and won it when Tom Hartley fed Ian Buckley to score.

A Trevor Jones (pictured left) double got Handsworth Old Boys off the mark at Bulls Head. He hit goals in each half before Gary Leesley added a third to ensure the Old Boys' first win of the season. Heeley Crown also won away at Loxley. Second half goals by Mick Eason and Gary Sidebottom put Crown in charge and although Geoff Mayfield headed one back for Loxley, Crown held on. With defences on top, a goalless draw meant that Brinsworth Whitehill and Anston Athletic shared the spoils for a second week running. Anston were left counting the cost though as Adrian Beck joined his brother Alex on the injury list.

Division 2 - Jarvis double sees Lion's roar, while Southey go top in style

A Darren Jarvis double helped Red Lion roar to their first points of the season and a surprise victory over Colley. Colley started the day as leaders, but two from Jarvis and one from Greg Shaw had Lion comfortably in control by the break. After a few stern words from Neil Whitworth at half time, Colley came out all guns blazing and when Mark Searle and an Adrian Jackson penalty reduced the arrears to a single goal a recovery looked certain, but Joe Mothersole grabbed a fourth for Lion to earn that first win.

Chris Roberts and Rob Womack doubles saw Southey take Colley's top spot after a 7-0 win at Oughtibridge Village. That score looked unlikely at the break as Southey led by just a single goal, but after injury reduced Oughtibridge to nine men, Southey ran riot, with Marcus Pass, Danny Lindley and John Mellor all hitting the target as well. Referee Graham Hunt came in for praise as did Oughtibridge, who despite their lack of numbers never gave up.

Up to second is Rivelin after Josh Ransom and Scott Smith (pictured right) doubles helped them to maintain their 100% record with a 5-1 victory over a an Aston Mayerton side badly hit by Swine Flu. Rivelin maintained there 100% start to the season with a impressive 5-1 win over Aston Mayerton. After lots of early pressure in the first half Rivelin finally broke the deadlock with a goal from Scott Smith and minutes later Danny Stead netted to put Rivelin two up at half time. After the break Rivelin pressure paid off, and Josh Ranson made it three with a well taken goal, before Smith made it four with the best goal of the match. Aston pulled one back when Steven Jeffries ran from his own half to score, but Ranson got his second to wrap the game up. Referee Peter Henger (below) was praised for a flawless performance. Action from the game is also shown below.

Old Harrow gained their first win in the league in a real thriller against fellow newcomers Highfield Old Crown. Joe Bilby and Pat Lynch both hit doubles for Harrow as they came from behind to overcome the two from Lucas Baker and one from Eddie McErlain. Both Fairbank-Rhodes and The Park maintained their unbeaten starts after sharing four goals. Ben Lee put The Park ahead early on, but within ten minutes Andy Baxter and Joe Knight goals had  Fairbank in front. It stayed like that until the second half when Lee Bridges netted to leave them all square.

Junior Blades produced a stunning second half against Crookes & District to claim their first win of the season. Although Jon Sheldon gave the Blades an early lead, Crookes hit back through two from Matt Harley and one from Matt Garnett to lead 3-1 at the break, but a Gary Lines header followed by a Danny Law penalty soon had them level. The Blades then wrapped up the points with another for both Law and Sheldon and one from Joe Grapes.

20 Sept - CBC Premier 147 stay top, while The Vine overcome loss of Woolley

Ecclesfield 147 stayed top as Craig Senior (pictured scoring the first) and Kevan Hunter goals gave them victory at Stocksbridge. Senior's half volley gave 147 a half time lead and sub Kevan Hunter chested the ball down before running on to crash home the clincher.

Laycock Sports maintained their perfect start thanks to a Chris Gill winner at Yew Tree. John Kilcoyne supplied the perfect cross for Mark McInnes to give Laycock's an early lead, only to see Chris Leek level for the home side, but Gill's strike just before half time restored Laycock's lead. Yew Tree threw everything at them in the second half, but despite striking the woodwork three times they couldn't get the equaliser they deserved.

Further action from this game is shown below (photos courtesy of Ian Revitt):

After Nick Hickson had given Redmires the lead, The Vine's Craig Woolley suffered ligament damage and the game was delayed for almost an hour, but the delay seemed to affect Redmires more and two Rikki Davidson strikes meant The Vine gave Craig something to smile about.

Ali Mitchell grabbed three as Macron Cup holders Stannington Village pipped Millhouses Thermolast in a seven goal thriller. Mitchell took just two minutes to put Stannington in front and he hit their second off a post midway through the half. Thermolast got back into the game when Sean Flynn turned a wicked cross into his own net, but he quickly made up for it by scoring at the right end. Rob Gardiner netted twice for Thermolast, but wedged in between them was Mitchell's match winning third. Woodhouse West End had dominated the first half at home to Civil Service and could have easily been out of sight, but all they had to show for it was a Jason Short goal. As the game wore on, Service switched their tactics and the move paid off when sub Lee Wild earned them a surprise point.

Liam Simmonite's curling shot gave HandsworthWMC the early advantage at Hemsworth Villa, but David Tollerfield soon levelled for Villa. A foul by Rob Pratt allowed Nick Owen to give Villa the lead from the penalty spot and Russell Westby scored the pick of the goals (pictured right) to double their lead before half time. After the break Handsworth had the chance to get back into the game when ex-villa player Tom Crosby was felled in the area, but when he took the spot kick himself he saw it saved by keeper Jamie King. Matt Holmes hit the bar as Handsworth pressed, but Villa had the final say when Owen headed his second. Further action from this game is below (photos courtesy of Mick Moat):

Division One - Davis on cue for Pitsmoor, while Angel pip Bulls Head

Pitsmoor Royal Oak stayed top thanks to two Gavin Davis (pictured left) strikes at Heeley Crown. The home side should have taken the lead when they were awarded a penalty, but they missed the spot kick and in the second half Davis got onto the end of a Scott Spzajer flick to hit his first and carried the ball from his own half past three defenders for his second. Referee Mr Morris gained praise from both sides for a second week running.

Woodhouse Angel stayed second after coming from behind to win a nine goal thriller at Bulls Head and extend their unbeaten run to seventeen games. Jordan Barton gave Bull an early lead only to see it cancelled out a minute later by Lance Dixon. Gareth Simons then put Angel in front only to see that cancelled out by Kerry Dixon. Ryan Batham restored Angel's lead, but a Matt Coates header drew Bull level again and Kerry Dixon hit his second to put them in front again. Angel hit back to level again through Kirk Smith and they won it with five minutes remaining when Lee Marshall pounced on a defensive error to score

After Kieran Fairchild had put Handsworth Old Boys ahead, Loxley hit back to pick up their first win. John Bailey's through ball put Mick Smith in for the equaliser before Bailey volleyed the winner. Loxley almost made it three when the elusive Gareth Turner forced the Old Boys keeper into the save of the game.

Two Tom Hartley strikes gave Ranch their first win at this level at home to Niagara. Carl Pearce should have given Ranch the lead from the penalty spot, but saw his effort saved by Andy Love and it stayed goalless until a three man move saw Hartley give Ranch the lead a minute after the break before finding the top corner for his second. The down side for Ranch was the loss of the injured Jordan Stead.

After Tom Gabbitas had been brought down in the area, Adam Russell stepped up to score his one hundred and fiftieth goal for Anston Athletic and although it was cancelled out by Brinsworth Whitehill's Carl Fleming, it maintained Anston's unbeaten start.

Division 2 - Colley held as the goals go flying in

On a day 39 goals were scored in the six games, Colley stayed top despite being held by The Park. Marshall gave The Park the lead, but centre back Neil Whitworth (pictured right) came up to score with a well worked set piece, but he then went from hero to zero when he gave a penalty away, rammed home by Greg Ramsden. Colley fought back again though and Carl Lomas earned them a share of the spoils.

Southey Social are second after a John Mellor treble helped them to a 5-3 victory at Old Harrow. Dwain Wood and Craig Hanson netted Southey's others, while Luke Jones, Richard Brosnan and Joe Bilby all found the net for the home side. Scott Whittington also hit three as Fairbank-Rhodes won 7-1 at Crookes & District, while Aston Mayerton's Billy Evans also netted three as Aston Mayerton beat Birley Moor News. Steve Dickinson an Carl Naylor goals gave Birley hope they could get something from the game, but an OG and a David Sills double finished them off.

Joe Mothersole and Alan Lamb strikes saw Red Lion race into a two goal lead at home to Highfield Old Crown, but Lucas Baker's first just before the break gave Crown hope and two more from him in the second half won it for the visitors. David Husdon and John Gill doubles, together with singles from Daniel Hill and Paul Hawksworth helped Oughtibridge Village to a first win of the season, 6-0 against Junior Blades.

13 Sept - CBC Premier Goals Galore as 147 hit back to stay top

Twenty nine goals were scored in the five CBC Premier games, including early leaders Ecclesfield 147 coming from two down to win a nine goal thriller at Handsworth WMC. It was Handsworth that made the early running and they took the lead when Kieran Gallagher fed Liam Simmonite to score. They doubled that lead by half time when Simmonite's shot was parried and Ryan Taylor followed up to score, but straight after the break Craig Senior scored from a corner and a minute later Ryan Keeney levelled when Jayson Reeves miscued shot fell perfectly for him.

Gallagher restored Handsworth's lead when he found himself one-on-one with the keeper, but man of the match Danny Touhey's (left) 25 yarder brought 147 level again. Reeves then flicked on for Senior to give 147 the lead for the first time, but this time it was Handsworth's turn to level when Gallagher headed home from an acute angle. A real thriller was finally decided when Gavin Hunter beat two men before driving the ball past the keeper to keep 147's perfect start going, but Handsworth will count themselves unlucky not to get a share of the points.

Another nine goal thriller saw Laycock Sports pip Yew Tree, with Sam Read (right) adding another treble to his impressive CV. Alex Napier scored his first for the club to give Laycock's a second minute lead and Sam Read added two more with just seventeen minutes gone. Steve Gardan converted a Ryan Cockayne cross to pull one back for Tree, but Mark McInnes soon added a fourth for Laycock's. Cockayne gave Tree hope they could get back into the game when he headed a free kick home just before the break, but the second half started with Read completing his hat-trick to restore Laycock's three goal lead. It was a good job he did as first Jon Brooke and then Dan Lewis with a solo run pulled two back for Tree, but they couldn't get the equaliser their fightback deserved.

Alistair Mitchell was the League's top scorer playing for Anvil last season, but in the summer he switched to Macron Cup holders Stannington Village and he got his first two for them in a 6-1 thrashing of Redmires. Shane Toulson put Stannington ahead, only to see Nick Hickson soon level for Redmires. It didn't take Stannington too long to go back in front though as Mitchell hit his first for the club, before Toulson grabbed his second. Mitchell then added his second before Arron Worsfold scored his first for the club and David Shepherd completed the scoring by headin Joe Barker's cross home.

After Craig Barraclough had given Stocksbridge Park Steels a half time lead, Craig Woolley equalised in the second half to give The Vine had a second successive and Civil Service also drew by the same score at home to Hemsworth Villa. Centre back Chris Fowler gave the Servants a half time lead and despite several close calls it looked as if it would be enough until referee Kevin Bridges awarded a controversial penalty in the final few minutes which was rammed home by the grateful Nick Owen.

Division One - Oak & Angel keep their perfect starts

After Handsworth Old Boys had more than matched them in the first half, Pitsmoor Royal Oak produced a storming second half to keep their perfect record in tact. Leon Stocks tapped in Scott Spzajer's cross to give Oak the lead and Elijah Lewis netted his fourth in two games to double it. Gavin Davis then raced away from the Handsworth defence to make it three before Wes Lawrence grabbed a late consolation for Handsworth.

Woodhouse Angel also kept their perfect record going with a 4-2 home win over a Loxley side expected to be one of the challengers for promotion. Chris Whalley's pass allowed Anthony Marshall to give Loxley the lead in Marshall's last game before a knee operation and although Kirk Briddon levelled for Angel, Loxley were back in front before the break when Danny Bray fired home from twenty five yards. Although Loxley hit a post after the break, it was Angel that took hold of the game and Chris Towey headed a corner home to level before Ryan Bathman's first for the club put them ahead and Towey's second clinched it.

A James Lawton (left) double in the first half at Anvil sent Anston Athletic on their way to a first win at this level. Simon Herbert's left foot shot went in off a post to make it three and Ben Sargeant scrambled home a fourth. Anston didn't have it all their own way though and they were indebted for another polished performance by keeper Jon Parker, including a penalty save late on.

After Chris Smith's sliced cross found the net to give Niagara a fortunate lead, a Carl Pearce goal earned Ranch a point and they will count themselves unlucky not to have taken all three. Brinsworth Whitehill and Bulls Head played out a goalless draw, but what the game lacked in goals was more than made up by quality football, helped by some terrific refereeing from Mr Morris.

Division 2 - Colley go goal crazy to see off Crookes

Mark Searle (far left) hit five and Lee Campbell (2nd left) four as Colley hit thirteen past Crookes & District to maintain their role as early leaders. The game was as good as over after just fifteen minutes as Colley had built a five goal lead by then and a Paul Smith double with others from Richie Whitworth and Ridha Miladi made sure the goals continued to flow at regular intervals, but Crookes finally rallied and scored two consolations through Chris Cottyn and Ashley Green.

A Josh Bermingham (right) double helped Rivelin keep their perfect start going at home to Red Lion. Rivelin were given a real shock when Lion keeper Neil Hawley's long clearance bounced over everyone to find the net, but a Liam Moloney header levelled for Rivelin and a Callum Short penalty had them ahead by the break. Bermingham then added his brace before James Pearce completed the scoring with Rivelin's fifth - pictures from the game are shown below.

Southey Social are third after they had a good 4-0 victory at Junior Blades. Chris Roberts gave them a first half lead and after John Mellor had scored his first for the club, Roberts added his second. David Maw netted the fourth and both clubs also had good words for referee Steve Wilman. Fairbank-Rhodes are fourth after Scott Whittington and Joe Knight strikes gave them a 2-0 victory over Oughtibridge Village, while a second half Ben Lee double gave The Park victory at Highfield Old Crown. After Steve Dickinson's twenty five yard strike gave Birley Moor News the lead, two Luke Jones games either side of half time put visitors Old Harrow Grenoside in front. Birley didn't give up though and with ten minutes remaining Danny Williams scored to send both teams home with their first point of the season.

10 Sept - CBC Premier - Reeves late wiiner puts 147 top, while Service Wild about Lee

A very late Jayson Reeves (pictured left) strike saw Ecclesfield 147 win a seven goal thriller at Yew Tree to go top, while Wes Bamford and Lee Wild strikes helped Civil Service to their first CBC Premier win at Millhouses Thermolast.

Gavin Hunter gave Ecclesfield 147 an early lead, but Yew Tree were level before half time when Ryan Cockayne poked home Scott Birch's cross and just after the break, after Mark Woodcock was brought down in the area, he picked himself up to put Yew Tree ahead from the penalty spot. It looked as if the points would go Tree's way when Jamie Potts put Chris Leek in for their third, but Jayson Reeves overhead kick brought 147 back into the game. Ryan Keeney's long range effort deceived the keepr to bring 147 level and Reeves found the bottom corner in the final minute to win it for them and put them top.

Wes Bamford's header gave Civil Service a first half lead at Millhouses Thermolast and after several great saves by Service keeper Karl Whitby (pictured right), they broke to grab a second when Lee Wild forced the ball home. Millhouses kept forcing the pace and Whitby was again forced into action and he was finally beaten by Danny Turner, but Service held on to give them their first victory back in the top flight.

Division 2 - Garnett is Crookes gem, while Village suffer the Colley-wobbles

Inspired by Matt Garnett, Crookes & District bounced back from their heavy defeat last weekend to beat Highfield Old Crown, while Adam Jackson was the star of the show for Colley as Paul Smith and Ian Sharland goals gave them victory over Oughtibridge Village.

Crookes & District showed no signs of a hangover from their heavy defeat at the weekend and Matt Hartley's free kick gave them a deserved lead at home to newcomers Highfield Old Crown. Michael Northcliffe missed a great chance to level for Crown when he skyed a penalty over the bar, but he wasn't too discouraged by it and he did level before the break. Crookes might have let their heads drop, but they came out strong in the second half and man-of-the-match Matt Garnett hit a real gem midway through the half, before leading scorer Ainsley Cawley made the points save with a third.

Colley became the early leaders with a 2-0 win at Oughtibridge Village, but they looked anything but winners in the first half. Adam Jackson was introduced after the break and he immediately started to run the show and Colley pressure led to Paul Smith giving them the lead. Jackson was brought down in the area, but Village keeper Matt Russell made a great save from Lee Campbell's spot kick, yet he could do nothing later when full back Ian Sharland struck a real corker into the top corner to seal it for Colley.

9 Sept - Best Wishes to Wayne & Verity

One of League Champions Woodhouse West End's stalwarts, Wayne Fuller gets married this weekend to Verity. The League wishes them all the very best for their big day and in the future. Wayne's dad Bill will no doubt be directing the service from the touchline!!!

9 Sept - Macron Cup Draw Round 2 sees holders at Handsworth Old Boys

The Macron Cup Round 2 draw saw the holders Stannington Village given a visit to Handsworth Old Boys, while last season's losing finalists Woodhouse West End will entertain Southey Social. Two all CBC Premier ties includes a repeat of the 2003 final with Hemsworth Villa entertaining Laycock Sports and the other one sees the 2008 winners Handsworth WMC visit Yew Tree. League newcomers Highfield Old Crown travel to Redmires, while the other newcomers Old Harrow Grenoside entertain Niagara. The full draw is as follows:

Anston Athletic v Brinsworth Whitehill; Crookes v The Vine; Handsworth Old Boys v Stannington Village; Heeley Crown v Woodhouse Angel; Hemsworth Villa v Laycock Sports; Millhouses Thermolast v Colley; Old Harrow v Niagara; Pitsmoor Royal Oak v Bulls Head; Ranch v Civil Service; Red Lion v Anvil; Redmires v Highfield Old Crown; Rivelin v Loxley; Stocksbridge Park Steels v Fairbank-Rhodes; The Park v Ecclesfield 147; Woodhouse West End v Southey Social; Yew Tree v Handsworth WMC. All ties to be played on Sunday 4 Oct, kick off at 11.00 am

9 Sept - Fixture change for 13 Sept + note about Referees for 20 Sept

The CBC Premier has a fixture change on 13 Sept with Handsworth WMC now entertaining Ecclesfield 147 instead of Millhouses Thermolast. The referees for 20 Sept have not yet been released by the County FA, so please don't ring Dominic. When they are released Dominic will contact the home teams to let them know who their referee is for that date.

8 Sept - Oak put their best foot forward for Charity

As part of their preparations for the season, Pitsmoor Royal Oak took part in the Sheffield Steel City Charity Fun from SWFC Ground to SUFC Ground to help raise funds for the Weston Park Hospital Teenage Caner Unit. The run was organised Oak's Tommy Fowler (pictured right in the picture left) in association with Stephanie Kings Stars 2009 Charity. It was a great day where young and old all took part to raise money for a very good cause. The race was won by Club Captain Glynn Graham dressed as superman (pictured right with Craig Graham as Batman)  in just over 30mins. I have attached a couple of photos in the hope that you could put something up on the website to raise the awareness of the Stephanie Kings Stars 2009 Charity

7 Sept - Highfield Old Crown - change of mobile number

The mobile number for Highfield Old Crown secretary Eddie MacErlain shown in the League Handbook is incorrect - it should be 0778 070 2212.

6 Sept - CBC Premier Read all about it - Alan gets the perfect birthday present

After their Merit Cup exploits, newly promoted Laycock Sports kicked off their CBC Premier programme off with a 6-2 victory over Redmires to become the early leaders and give secretary Alan Parkin the perfect birthday present. Sam Read was again their star with three of the goals. Andy Birks gave Redmires the lead, but controversy hit just before half time when referee Mark Thompson adjudged Sam Read's effort to have crossed the line. Laycock's took the lead on the hour mark when Steve Morris slotted home, but Redmires had lost their keeper by this stage and they were powerless to stop John Kilcoyne netting twice before Read completed his hat-trick with two more. John Burns managed another for Redmires but they gained little consolation from it.

The Vine also got their first season in the top flight off to a promising start with a home draw against Hemsworth Villa (see pictures left of action from that game). Villa hit the bar in the first half, but The Vine took the lead when Kevin Ford put James Mitcham in and he made no mistake. It looked as if it might win it until Ian Holmes late cross was finished off by Nick Owen.

Civil Service quickly found what the CBC Premier is all about as champions Woodhouse West End beat them 3-0. Spencer Taylor and his strike partner Mark Calvin both found the net to show that age is no barrier to class and Lee Dolan hit their other from the penalty spot. Handsworth WMC were also impressive winners, 4-1, over Macron Cup holders Stannington Village. Tom Fletcher gave Stannington a first half lead, but a David Shepherd own goal just after the interval put Handsworth back on level terms. With Ryan Taylor calling the shots for Handsworth they took control after that and goals from Keiran Gallagher, Robert Pratt and a Tom Crossley penalty saw them home.

A Craig Senior strike was enough for Ecclesfield 147 to get off to a winning start at home to Millhouses Thermolast and although it was the only goal of the game, that was as much down to the keepers, Zaffa and Mark Davies. Mike Smith finished off Mark Woodcock's corner to give Yew Tree the lead against local rivals Stocksbridge Park Steels and two more from Scott Birch either side of half time gave them a comfortable lead, but Steels Mitchell Savage pulled one back near the end before John Ward grabbed another in the final minute to give Yew Tree an uncomfortable finish.

Division One - Lewis treble as Oak see off Ranch

In Division One, Pitsmoor Royal Oak quickly showed their determination to make a quick return to the top flight as new signing Elijah Lewis netted a second half hat-trick in a 4-0 victory over newly promoted Ranch. Leon Stocks had given Oak a first half lead and Ranch missed a chance to get back into the game when Carl Pierce saw his penalty saved by Oak keeper Liam Haslam.  Bulls Head also fell to defeat in their first game in Division One, losing 2-0 at Heeley Crown. Carl Lomas marked his debut for Crown with the first and Shaun Higginbottom doubled their advantage before the break. Bulls Head hit back strongly after the interval though and only  a superb performance by central defenders Darren Compson and Chris Edwards kept them at bay.

Anvil were the only promoted side to win, coming out on top in their game with fellow promotees Brinsworth Whitehill. Brinsworth led through Aaron Turners cross shot, but Anvil were level at the break through Dean Jepson. Both sides missed chances after that, but Matt Asher finally accepted one to win it for Anvil. Anston Athletic must have thought they had got off to a winning start at Loxley, but a late John Denton header meant they shared the points. A Tom Gabbitas (pictured right) double gave Anston the early advantage, but Anthony Marshall just before half time and John Delaney's header not long after the break drew Loxley level. Ryan Taff then looked as if he had won it for Anston until Denton's late header.

Woodhouse Angel started with a win over local rivals Handsworth Old Boys. After a goalless first half, Angel went in front when Lee Marshall set Kirk Briddon up and their lead was doubled when Marshall grabbed one for himself. Carl Atkins pulled one back for Handsworth and had it not been for a very solid display in the centre of the Angel defence by Chris Towey, they might have nicked a point.

Division 2 - Bermingham in a hurry as Rivelin see off Crookes

Josh Bermingham netted a twelve minute hat-trick as Rivelin started their Division Two season with the day's best win, 6-1 over Crookes & District. Ainsley Cawley gave Crookes the lead early on, but Jamie Cherry and Josh Ranson strikes had Rivelin in front by the break. It was one-way traffic after that and Liam Maloney grabbed a third before Bermingham's quick fire treble. Southey Social took the lead at Colley through Craig Hanson and Southey missed some chances to extend their lead, but Colley also wasted some good opportunities so were grateful to Southey defender Lee Clayton when he headed past his own keeper to leave the game all square.

Macron Cup - Fairbank-Rhodes see off Junior Blades, while Old Crown get off to a winning start

The Macron Cup also kicked off and the day's best winners in Round One were Fairbank-Rhodes as they beat Junior Blades 5-0. Hilton Stratford put Fairbank and a Scott Whittington double put them in control. Joe Knight netted a fourth before the impressive John Tomlinson made it five. Newcomers to the League Highfield Old Crown started well with a 4-1 victory over Oughtibridge Village. It didn't look good when Luke Stanley put Oughtibridge ahead in the first half, but Thomas Brightmore levelled after the break, before Lucas Baker netted twice along with one from Liam Carolan.

Second half strikes by Greg Ramsden and Ben Lee gave The Park a comfortable win at Birley Moor News, but Red Lion's win at Aston Mayerton was anything but comfortable. fter Lion were awarded a penalty, Aston's keeper Ben Cutts saved the spot kick, but from the resulting corner Joe Mothersole put Lion ahead. Undaunted by that, Aston hit back to level through David Sills and then took the lead through the very impressive Ryan Hall. Aston couldn't hold onto it though and after Chris Garlick had levelled for Lion, Paul Turner marked his debut for them with the winner.

3 Sept - Laycock Sports lift the Steve Gee Merit Cup

Despite the torrid downpours of rain the Look Local stadium at Stocksbridge was in perfect condition to stage the Steve Gee Merit Final and a thrilling game saw Laycock Sports beat The Vine 4-2.

Laycocks fell behind in the first minute when James Mitcham's shot left Grant Parkin flat footed, but they almost equalised when Sam Read had a shot well saved by Vine keeper James Marshall. Marshall then produced another great save to stop Craig Woolley heading into his own goal, but The Vine edged the first half though and deservedly led at the break.

The second half wasn't too old though when Read danced his way past three defenders before coolly slotting the ball past Marshall to equalise and Read was again involved when he met John Kilcoyne's corner with a volley that looked to be going into the net before Stavros Kontou made sure to put Laycock's in front. Their lead was extended when Steve Morris took the ball off a defender in the penalty area before beating Marshall, but The Vine hit back when Steve Wilkinson's superb free kick beat Grant Parkin in the Laycock's net. With the clock almost up The Vine had another free kick just outside the area, but this time the ball was blocked and Read pounced on the clearance to outpace The Vine defence and cap his Man of the Match performance with his second of the night.

7 June - Ecclesfield 147 final hopes hit by Punchbowl

Ecclesfield 147 reached the final of the prestigious twentytwo sponsored 5-a-side competition but fell at the final hurdle to Punchbowl Crookes. They beat fellow Blades Super Draw side Loxley and Meadowhall side Hillsborough Phoenix in the group stages, before easing past another Meadowhall side Chapeltown Oak Jubilee in the quarter finals. The beat Phoenix again in the semi finals, but after losing a man for a five minute sin bin in the final, a Richard Adams goal wasn't enough and they went down 4-1. Their work wasn't totally in vain though as the runners-up went home with a bag of footballs.
