25 Oct - Sunday Senior Cup - Handsworth gain revenge and Service Mean business as the rest go through It was success all the way for Blades Super Draw League sides in the Sunday Senior Cup, five of our sides going through to the last 32. Civil Service’s victory was the most dramatic as they found themselves behind three times to visitors Millmoor Juniors. Danny Campbell’s first for the club brought them level the first time and a Ben Brown goal took the game into extra time. Brown was again the saviour in extra time before they went on to win it with a late Matt Meaney (pictured left) strike. The most comfortable win came Stannington Village’s way as they outclassed a Manchester United Supporters Club side. Ali Mitchell produced a good finish to give Stannington a half time lead and after the break he doubled his tally with a simple tap-in after Shaun Flynn squared the ball to him. Lee Johnstone and Josh Coulson added the others to leave Stannington comfortable 4-0 winners. Handsworth WMC entertained fellow Blades Super Draw League CBC Premier side Redmires and after losing to them the week before, Handsworth re-shuffled their team by putting Sean Simmonite up front with his brother Liam and the move paid handsome dividends. Shaun saw his first attempt at goal brilliantly saved by Redmires keeper Luke Siggs, but there was no denying him when Ryan Taylor put him through for a one-on-one with Siggs. The second half wasn’t too old when Shaun rattled in a second from outside the area and revenge for Handsworth was assured when Matt Sykes finished off a flowing move for their third. Laycock Sports were in no mood to hang around at Firth Park WMC and Steve Morris strike from eighteen yards soon had Laycocks in front. John Kilcoyne then set up man of the match Scott Wesney (pictured right) to head a second and the games was as good as won before half time when Kilcoyne added a third after a typical mazy dribble past three defenders. Although they conceded one in the second half the result never looked in doubt. Yew Tree produced a very solid defensive performance at Sitwell Old Boys to come away with a single goal victory. Ryan Cockayne produced the pass to set up Matt Jessermino for the winner (picture far left shows Jessermino - partly hidden- hitting the winner and second left is the keeper picking the ball out of the net) and although they missed some chances to extend their lead, they were also grateful for a number of saves by keeper James Marks. More action from the game is shown below.
Sunday Junior Cup - Anston pip Oak in ten goal thriller The Sunday Junior Cup produced a more mixed bag of results as six of our side went through and six went out. Probably the best tie of the round saw Anston Athletic come away from fellow Blades Super Draw Division One side Pitsmoor Royal Oak with a penalty shoot out victory after they had shared ten goals. The Division One leaders Pitsmoor looked on their way to a comfortable win when Craig Graham and a Scott Spzajer header gave them a two goal lead inside the first five minutes, but Anston soon responded when Ryan Taff smashed in a long range effort and they drew level when a good move ended with Simon Herberts finishing coolly from the edge of the area. It got even better for Anston when a slide rule pass from James Lawton released Ant Bayou down the left and his first time cross was expertly finished by Herberts to give his side a half time lead. As Pitsmoor pressed hard in the second half Anston defended resolutely, with keeper Jon Parker (pictured left) making several saves and his hard work paid off when James Lawton broke the offside trap to increase Anston’s lead. Pitsmoor didnt give up though and after Eli Lewis pulled one back, Paul Hinde struck an equaliser with just two seconds left. The game swung Pitsmoor’s way again when Gavin davis put them ahead in the second period of extra time, but when a corner found its way to substitute Joe Bellamy he stabbed home from close range to force the tie into penalties. Both sides scored their first two penalties, but after two consecutive penalty saves by Anston keeper Jon Parker first Simon Turner and then Joe Bellamy netted their penalties to take Anston through. The last remaining Division Two side is Aston Mayerton after they thrashed local rivals Swallownest Wetherby 5-0. Adam Smith netted direct from a corner to put them ahead and after Darren Lister had doubled their lead, David Sills netted a hat-trick. Division One Anvil also had a hat-trick hero in Matt Asher as they thrashed Norton 5-1. Dean Jepson and Frazer Hartley added Anvil’s others. Brinsworth Whitehill came from behind to beat a good Wickersley CC side. Jamie Radford levelled from the penalty spot before sub Ryan Stevenson hit their winner. Niagara also went through as a quickly taken corner caught visitors Hillsborough Hotel napping and Steve Simmons scored the games only goal. After Gareth Turner had been outstanding in the Loxley goal in the first half, his work was rewarded when a single Geoff Mayfield strike also proved enough for Loxley to go through at home to Walkley. The Park were unlucky to go out in a seven goal thriller at home to Sheaf House, and although Old Harrow led at Ecclesfield WMC, they went out 3-1. A Johnson strike couldn’t stop Handsworth Old Boys falling to Arbourthorne EA and a Danny Law strike for Junior Blades wasn’t enough as they crashed out to Heeley Old Boys. Colley also crashed to a heavy defeat at Beighton Magpies. CBC Premier - West End just love-Lee In the CBC Premier, champions Woodhouse West End stepped up their title challenge with a 5-1 victory over Millhouses Thermolast, while current leaders Ecclesfield 147 were held to a draw by The Vine. West End took a ninth minute lead when Joel Lee found the net and it didn’t take him long to hit a second. Lee Dolan then produced a real cracker from twenty five yards to send West End in at half time with a three goal lead. Ash Atkins made it four when he found the far corner before Lee completed his hat-trick, but Millhouses didn’t give up and grabbed a consolation when Luke Croager smashed the ball into the roof of the net after he was set up by Ali Berry. Ecclesfield 147 almost took the lead when Gavin Hunter went through The Vine defence, but the keeper came out to rescue the visitors, but The Vine had their chances with both Will Blakeney and Rikki Davidson going close. Both sides then hit the woodwork before Danny Seaman broke the deadlock to give The Vine the lead. Ecclesfield hit back to equalise through Craig Senior and they almost won it when Richard Adams had a shot tipped over and Matt Clarke had a header cleared off the line, but there was no denying that The Vine were worth their point. Division 1 - Crown Pierce by Angel In Division One, Woodhouse Angel travelled to fellow promotion candidates Heeley Crown and although Angel only lead at half time with a single Gareth Simons solo effort, they ran riot in the second half. Adam Dickinson chased a long ball to nick a second before Lee Marshall grabbed their third. Crown’s defence didn’t know which way to turn by this stage and as well as Simons second Wes Pierce (pictured right) helped himself to a hat-trick. Division 2 - Form turned upside as home records tumble Division Two saw three unbeaten home records bite the dust, with Crookes & District’s victory at second place Fairbank-Rhodes the biggest shock of the lot. Craig Peppard gave Crookes an early two goal lead, but it looked like it was going to be situation normal when two John Tomlinson crosses allowed Scott Whittington and Andy Baxter to level for the home side before half time. For once though Crookes gathered themselves and driven on by Mark Young they re-took the lead through Nick Damlin before John Alcock added a fourth. Any thoughts that Fairbank could get back into the game disappeared when Matt Garnett netted a fifth from the penalty spot. Almost as big a surprise was Highfield Old Crown’s win at a Rivelin side that had yet to drop a point. Tom Turner gave Crown a first half lead and although David Hook hit an equaliser in off a post, David Whittingham hit a left foot volley to win it for Crown. Birley Moor News were defending their unbeaten home record, but despite goals from Brett Moxam and Jason Naylor, a rejuvenated Oughtibridge Village, driven on by skipper James Hague, proved too much for them. James Mace grabbed two and Bradley Green and Lewis Smart one each before Lee Smith solo effort wrapped up a 5-2 win. |
18 Oct - CBC Premier - West End are cock-a-Hooper The CBC Premier leaders Ecclesfield 147’s perfect record was shattered as Danny Hooper (pictured right) netted a hat-trick to give reigning champions Woodhouse West End a 3-2 victory over them. Hooper gave West End the lead early on only to see Gavin Hunter sidefoot an equalizer before half time. Although Hooper soon had West End back in front after the interval, 147 levelled a second time when Jayson Reeves fired home, but West End and Hooper weren’t to be denied and he headed home their winner. 147’s defeat allowed both second place Stannington Village and third place Laycock Sports to move within three points of the leaders with solid wins. Stannington led Stocksbridge Park Steels with two Lee Johnstone strikes either side of the break before Craig Barraclough pulled one back for the visitors, but it was as close as Steels got. David Shepherd hit the home side’s third before two Lewis Nicholson strikes either side of one for Ali Mitchell gave Stannington a 6-1 victory. Laycock Sports 2-0 victory over The Vine was less spectacular and had it not been for keeper Chris Gill the result may well have been very different. Steve Morris gave Laycock’s the lead, but as The Vine hit back only a number of Gill saves kept Laycock’s in front. With The Vine pressing for an equalizer, Stavros Kontou chested the ball down on the edge of his own area before racing the length of the pitch to hit Laycock’s second. Gill had the final say though by saving a penalty in the final minute. Redmires finally put some points on the table when a single James Kirkham (pictured left) strike gave Redmires their first win of the season at Handsworth WMC. It was a real smash and grab affair as Handsworth had a big majority of the play, with both Matt Holder and Liam Simmonite hitting the woodwork, before Chris Cotterill’s cross was headed home by James Kirkham before the break. The second half saw more Handsworth pressure and Carl Bowler having one cleared off the line. There were several other close calls, but Redmires stand-in keeper Luke Siggs pulled off save after save to earn his side their first three points of the season. Referee Thomas Bramall was another to earn praise from both sides. After the visitors squandered an early chance, Danny Fowler gave Civil Service the lead at home to Yew Tree, but it was soon cancelled out by a Chris Leek strike and Leek gave Tree the lead soon after when he was set up by Mark Woodcock. It was Service’s turn to hit back with Fowler grabbing his second when the Tree defence failed to clear their lines and although (see picture centre below), both sides had chances in the second half, they stayed level to the end.
Millhouses Thermolast took a seventh minute lead at home to Hemsworth Villa when Danny Stuart’s corner deceived Villa keeper Jamie King and flew into the top corner and despite having another effort ruled out by referee Mick Firth (see picture first left), it looked as if it was going to be enough to win it until Russ Westby’s corner was headed into the danger area by Steve Jones and Jim Hughes headed home to leave it all square. More action from the game is shown below
Division 1 - Bulls Ranched in by Buckley, but Oak keep going In Division One, leaders Pitsmoor Royal Oak opened up a five point gap with a narrow 2-1 victory at Brinsworth Whitehill. Oak too the lead when Scott Szpajer was felled in the area and Chris Graham scored from the spot and they doubled it when Paul Hinde’s cross was headed home by Leon Stocks. Brinsworth didn’t give up though and they pulled one back through Danny Marsden, but Oak held on to maintain their perfect record. Ranch moved up to second as an Ian Buckley (pictured left) treble helped them to victory at Bulls Head. Buckley reacted first to a rebound to give Ranch the lead, but Greg Broomhead and Jordan Barton strikes soon had Bulls Head in front. Buckley second from a corner brought Ranch level and he met Ian Cooper’s cross to put them back in front soon after half time. Buckley then set up Tom Hartley for Ranch’s fourth and Breon Fogarty struck a fifth direct from a corner. Heeley Crown moved into third as doubles by Greg MacIntosh and veteran Mick Eason helped them to a comfortable win at Niagara. Although Simon Staniforth netted for Niagara, Daniel Skinner struck Crown’s fifth in a first half they totally dominated and although Niagara hit a second through Tom Rumbould and did much better in the second half, Crown had the final say when Matt Roebuck headed their sixth. Loxley climbed to fifth with victory at Anston Athletic, but it was by no means easy and they twice found themselves behind. James Lawton’s solo run and finish gave Anston an early lead, but it was soon cancelled out by Josh Delaney. Soon after, Jason Ramsden put Loxley in front, but Anston were level by half time with a thirty yard stunner from Tom Gabbitas. Anthony Bayou hit his second in as many games to put Anston in front, but Loxley hit back when Mick Smith tied a couple of defenders in knots before scoring. Man of the match Geoff Mayfield had run himself to a standstill for the Loxley cause and soon after he gave way, his replacement John Bailey (pictured right) held off a defender to put Loxley in front before Sam Barrett made it safe with their fifth. Anvil also climbed the table with a narrow home victory over Handsworth Old Boys. Reece Richards gave Handsworth the lead, but Matt Hartley had Anvil level by half time. Matt Asher played a neat on-two with Dean Jepson before putting Anvil ahead and Andy Hill added their third from twenty five yards. Kieron Fairchild grabbed a second for Handsworth, but Anvil held on. Division 2 - Oughtibridge out-Smart Crookes In Division Two Lewis Smart grabbed four goals as Oughtibridge Village hit eight past Crookes & District. It was a dream start for new manager David Hudson, but despite the scoreline, Crookes made a real go of it as goals from Sam Firth and Matt Hartley twice put them in with a chance. As it was they were overpowered and added to Smart’s four were a Bradley Green double and singles for James Mace and Lee Smith. The Park's Ben Lee will count himself very unlucky to end up on the losing side after his three goals twice had his side in front at leaders Southey Social. A Chris Roberts double and one each fro John Mellor, Gavin Pitts and Simon Jebson gave Southey a 5-2 lead before Lee’s third and a Lee Bridges volley threaten to save a point for the visitors. Fairbank-Rhodes maintained their challenge as two Scot Whittington strikes helped them to victory over Old Harrow. Joe Knight’s header gave Fairbank a first half lead and, after the break, Whittington added a second from the edge of the area before tapping home another from close range. Gavin Carder hit a fourth for Fairbank before Pat Lynch grabbed a consolation for the visitors. After a goalless first half, Luke Norfolk played a neat one-two with Ashley Baker to give Aston Mayerton the lead just two minutes after the break. Colley hit back to level through Lee Grocock, but they relaxed too much and when Ryan Hall’s shot was beaten out by the keeper, David Sills crashed home the rebound to win it for Aston. Ryan Barker gave Red Lion the lead at Junior Blades and although the Blades levelled through James Allen, Lion went back in front by half time when Barker’s shot took a wicked deflection off Richard Brailey. The Blades hit back again after the break when Luke Thompson bundled home and when Thompson crossed for Joe Grapes, he chested the ball down before hitting home the Blades’ winner. After a goalless first half, Birley Moor News raced into a two goal lead at Highfield Old Crown with a Brett Moxon penalty and a second from Rees Betts, but with seven minutes remaining Lucas Baker reduced the arrears and Crown claimed a point in the final minute when Craig Smith’s shot deceived the keeper. |

11 Oct - Senior Sunday Cup - Round 2 Six go through but four go out Stannington Village and Laycock Sports both hit five as six of our clubs progressed to Round Three. Luke Mitchell-Stanley set Stannington Village on their way to a 5-1 victory over Woodhouse Junction, while an Alex Napier hat-trick was the basis of Laycock Sports 5-2 win at Hoggs Head. Andy Birks (pictured right) also hit three as Redmires shook off their poor league form to win 3-1 at 1861 Leaisure. Chris Leek and Scott Birch strikes saw Yew Tree home against Mexborough's Queens United, while Martyn Kitridge and Danny Fowler strikes did the same for Civil Service. They are joined in the next round by Handsworth WMC who received a bye. Stannington Village had a somewhat easy passage into Round 3 with a 5-1 win over the Imperial League’s Woodhouse Junction .After a first half in which Village only managed to edge into the lead with a goal from Luke Mitchell- Stanley , the second half saw them get real control of the game and race into a 3-0 lead through Ali Mitchell and Joe Barker. Junction pulled one back but an own goal from a cross by Dave Shepherd and a further strike by Aaron Worsfold sealed the win. Junction didn’t help their cause by having two players sent off at the end. Laycock Sports travelled to Imperial League Hoggs Head and raced into a two goal lead at half time courtesy of two Alex Napier strikes Further goals by Stavros Kontou and Matt Edwards and a hat trick clincher from Napier interspersed with two goals by Hoggs Head saw Laycocks home to a comfortable win. Yew Tree went through against Mexborough’s Queens United. Tree led at half time through a Chris Leek strike and although Queens levelled in the second half, they were not to be denied and after Scott Birch hit the bar, substitute Ryan Cockayne set Birch up to clinch the tie for Yew Tree. See action below:
Civil Service also had a narrow win against Cart and Horses from the Imperial League. Service were behind until the experienced Martin Kitridge (pictured left) made the most of his first start of the season to level before half time. In the second half of a close game Service got the deciding goal when Danny Fowler converted a penalty. Redmires went to 1861 Leisure of the Imperial League and although Redmires were well on top in the first half, they conceded a goal on the half hour mark. They were back level almost immediately though when Andy Birks knocked in Chris Cotterill's corner. In the second half 1861 applied quite a bit of pressure, but with Cotterill outstanding, Redmires always had the edge and a further two goals by Birks sealed the win. Last seasons quarter finalists Woodhouse West End’s hopes of another good run in the competition came unstuck at Meadowhall outfit Hackenthorpe. The home side raced into a two goal lead after just twenty minutes and West End missed a great chance to pull one back before half time when Dale Fuller missed a penalty. Soon after the restart though West End pressure led to skipper Fuller making amends with a great free kick before Danny Hooper scrambled home an equaliser to force extra time. West End went behind again, but a Joel Lee penalty levelled things up again, but with just five minutes remaining it was Hackenthorpe that grabbed a winner. Disappointing for West End and in particular for Dave Kippax who had been outstanding. Another penalty miss proved very costly as Hemsworth Villa ‘s progress in the cup was halted by another Meadowhall side AFC Gardens. Despite Villa having most of the play, it was Gardens who took the lead, but Villa levelled with a Steve Jones header from a corner. This took the game into extra time and Villa may have thought they had won it when Nick Owen was brought down in the box but unfortunately he missed the resultant penalty and Gardens grabbed the winner deep into extra time. The Vine found the going hard against Brunsmeer Abbey AJW but went in 1-1 at half time thanks to a Rikki Davidson penalty. After the interval Abbey got right on top and raced into a 5-1 lead before Richard Mills and a Joe France penalty made the score more respectable. Abbey added another late on. Despite Craig Senior claiming a second half hat trick, Ecclesfield 147 fell at the first hurdle as their much weakened side went out to Meadowhall side Mosborough who were 5-0 up at half time. With 147 resting several of their star players out, they were no match for their opposition. Junior Sunday Cup - Round 2 Twelve through, but some are out of luck Thirteen sides progressed, with Junior Blades pulling off the surprise of the round as Division Two strugglers shook off their poor league form to beat Division One side Bulls Head with two Matt Cwojdzinski goals. Other Division Two sides to go through are Aston Mayerton, who hit five in their win at Anglers Rest, The Park, who beat Malin Bridge with the help of a Lee Bridges (pictured left) treble, Red Lion, who beat Sheaf House in a penalty shoot out and Old Harrow Grenoside, who beat fellow Blades Super Draw side Oughtibridge Village. Loxley were the days biggest winners with an 8-4 extra time victory over Wharncliffe, while Anston Athletic won 6-4 at FDL Totley. Pitsmoor Royal Oak in their win over Malin, while Brinsworth Whitehill, Niagara and Handsworth Old Boys all had 3-1 wins. They are joined in the next round by Colley and Anvil who both received byes. SUJB Old Boys provided the shock of the round beating Bull’s Head from the division above in an all Blades Super Draw clash. Matt Cwojdzinski was the catalyst when he came on as a sub in the second half to knock in two goals to put paid to Bull’s Head who scored a consolation through Jordan Barton. In the other all Blades clash between Oughtibridge Village and Old Harrow it was Old Harrow who came out on top, but only with five minutes to go when Emile D’Marco scored the winner after Martin Shaw had levelled Oughtibridge's opener. A good team performance saw Aston Mayerton go through 5-2 against Anglers Rest with goals from Ross Edwards (2), Ashley Baker, Billy Evans and Josh Bell, with the pick of them being an absolute screamer from 30 yards by Edwards which flew into the top corner. Lee Bridges was the star for The Park as they beat the Imperials Malin Bridge, scoring a hat trick, including one which saw him do a scintillating dribble through the Bridge defence. Ben Lee scored the other in a comfortable 4-1 victory. It took extra time for Loxley to prove victorious against Wharncliffe in a high scoring game .They went 2-0 in the first half but Josh Delaney pulled one back before half time. Goals from Geoff Mayfield, Jason Ranson and Delaney equalised two more for Wharncliffe and extra time was played. Loxley then turned on the turbo and further goals from Chris Whalley, Steve Mayfield, Mick Smith and Matthew Lingard sealed the win for Loxley. Anston Athletic continued their good start to the season with a win in a 10 goal thriller against FDL Totley.2-2 at half time the game swung to and and fro but it was Anston who wanted it more and scored with goals from Karl Drabble (2) Ryan Taff, James Lawton, Scott Kipling and Anthony Bayou. Pitsmoor Royal Oak also maintained their good start to the season with a 5-3 win over Malin. Oak raced into a three goal lead at half time courtesy of two Luke Parwana goals and a strike from Scott Spzjarer, and Glyn Graham added another soon after the break. Malin then staged a fight back to get back to 4-2 but Leon Stocks put the game beyond doubt for Oak before Malin added their third at the end. Niagara took the lead in their match against Penistone Church with a header from Craig Foster and they held that lead until the last twenty minutes of the match when Church equalised. In extra time Simon Staniforth (pictured left) settled the match with two power strikes the second following good work by Chris Smith. Brinsworth Whitehill turned in a good team performance to go through to the next round against Mason’s Arms although they were held to 0-0 at half time. Goals from Gavin Jones (2) and Nathan Anderson put them 3-0 up and they conceded only in the last 5 minutes. Handsworth Old Boys went through against Meadowhall side Staffordshire Arms thanks to goals from James Oldfield, Keiron Fairchild and an own goal Arms managed to pull one back to make it 3-1. They are joined in the next round by Anvil and Colley, who both received byes after their opponents scratched from the competition. A titanic battle that went right to the wire saw Red Lion lose out to Sheaf House in a penalty shoot-out. Sheaf had taken a very early lead which Phil Reynolds equalised and Ryan Barker put Lion in front before half time. Duane Ellis (pictured right) increased the lead but a defensive error gave Sheaf a chance. They then equalised to force extra time. Ellis put Lion ahead. but this again was equalised in extra time and the match went to penalties which Sheaf House won 4-3. Heeley Crown lost their match in injury time against Arbouthorne E A “B”. Heeley were one down in the first half despite having several good chances. E.A increased their lead before Sean Higginbotham pulled one back with free kick E A went 3-1 up and it looked like curtains but two penalty conversions by Gary Sidebottom equalised the scores but it was EA who got an injury time winner. Fairbanks Rhodes fresh from an unexpected victory in the league cup were fancied to get through their match against Foxwood Embassy and after going 2-0 up after a goalless first half with goals from Danny Hope and Mark Drayton that looked to be the case. Foxwood however had other ideas and powered through to a 4-2 victory after extra time. John Tomlinson was man of the match for Fairbanks. Southey Social proved no match for their Meadowhall opposition African Dream Team and came away smarting from a 5-1 defeat. Simon Jepson scored the Southey goal. Woodhouse Angel high flyers in Division One found themselves on the end of a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Heeley Old Boys with Gareth Simons grabbing their consolation goal. Bottom club Crookes and District hopes of a cup run came to an abrupt and painful end against Ecclesfield WMC where the home side were well beaten 7-1. Nick Dahlin grabbed the consolation goal for Crookes. CBC Premier - Steels too strong for Millhouses Stocksbridge Park Steels came from behind to win the day's only league game at home to Millhouses Thermolast. Adam Todd, Mark Carr, Kevin Davies and John Ward goals outweighing ones from David France and Ed Wiley. Stocksbridge Park maintained their good start to the season with a workmanlike 4-2 win over visitors Millhouses Thermolast. After being under the cosh early, Steels took a 9th minute lead when Adam Todd rounded keeper Mark Davies to coolly slot home despite calls for handball against the winger. The visitors equalised in the 23rd minute when a teasing far post cross by Edward Wiley was headed home by skipper David France for his second goal of the season. Minutes later, a flowing team move saw Thermolast take the lead with Wiley drilling home the ball past Winstanley. The visitors were dealt a blow on the half hour when the inspirational France had to be substituted following breathing problems, and within eight minutes Steels levelled. Davies' corner being headed home at the far post by Carr. Davies made it 3-2 to the home side in 49 minutes when he drilled a shot home after capitalising on a rare Dan Johnson error and the points were secured in the 67th minute when Ward capped a good move with a low shot into the corner. Despite this, Millhouses never gave up and could have come away with at least a point if injuries at key moments hadn't upset their team pattern. |
4 Oct - Macron Cup - Round 2 - Fairbank have a good Knight
The biggest shock in Round Two of the Macron Cup came when two Joe Knight strikes and one from Andy Baxter gave Division Two Fairbank-Rhodes a 3-2 victory over CBC Premier & former holders Stocksbridge Park Steels. Fairbank took a first half lead when Scott Whittington's cross was put away by Knight, but it was cancelled out by John Ward shortly after the break. Man-of-the-match Andy Baxter soon restored Fairbank's lead before another Whittington cross allowed Knight to grab his second. Whittington then had to take over in goal after injury to the Fairbank keeper, but he was beaten just once by Ward's second and Fairbank held on for a deserved victory. See action left. Rivelin was another Division Two side to cause a shock with victory over Division One Loxley. There had been little between the sides, but five minutes before the break the impressive David Hook was brought down just inside the box and Callum Short (pictured right) successfully converted his second penalty this season to give Rivelin a half time lead. With Andy Hogg outstanding, Loxley responded after the break and only a spectacular save from Rivelin's Matt Smith prevented them from equalizing, but the more Loxley pressed, the more they became vulnerable to the break and with just two minutes remaining Josh Bermingham then came off the bench to score his sixth goal in three games with a fine overhead kick to make it safe for Rivelin. Action from the game, including Callum Short's penalty, is shown below.
A third shock came at Division One Ranch where a Chris Hall (pictured right) goal proved enough to knock out CBC Premier Civil Service. Although Service had more of the ball, they had not been able to turn possession into goals and mid-way through the second half Graham Foggerty provided the perfect cross for Hall to head the games only goal. The all-CBC Premier tie between Hemsworth Villa and Laycock Sports lived up to its tie of the round status as four Nick Owen goals and one each from David Tollerfield and Russ Westby saw Villa twice come from behind to win a ten goal thriller. Sam Read headed Laycocks into the lead before Tollerfield levelled with another header (see picture far left). Lloyd McPherson then laid on a second for Read, but right on half time Owen grabbed his first to send the teams in level (see picture second left). Russ Westby scored his third in three games to put Villa in front before two more from Owen looked to have put Villa in control, but a John Kilcoyne penalty and a Stavros Kontou header brought Laycocks right back into it until Owen tapped in his fourth to clinch it for Villa. More action from the game is shown below.
The other all-CBC Premier clash was almost as dramatic with a Scott Birch treble helping Yew Tree come from two down to beat Handsworth WMC after extra time. Ryan Taylor’s spectacular twenty five yard strike and Kieran Gallagher’s header gave Handsworth a two goal lead at the break and they looked certain to go through until just eight minutes from time Ryan Cockayne gave Tree a lifeline. Further pressure saw Birch level to force extra time and his second gave Tree the lead. Mark England-Woodcock extended Tree’s lead before Birch completed his hat-trick and although Gallagher’s second gave Handsworth hope, it was quickly dispelled by England-Woodcock’s second. CBC Premier Redmires also had to come from two down to defeat league newcomers Highfield Old Crown. Thomas Brightmore gave the Division Two side the perfect start when he scored from twenty five yards in the first minute and a real upset looked on the cards when Lucas Baker tapped in a second before the break. After a few harsh words at the interval, Redmires come out a different team in the second half and Shaun Downing quickly pulled one back. Chris Cotterill’s corner was headed home by Andy Birks to level the scores and another Cotterill corner saw Luke Siggs head the winner for Redmires. League champions Woodhouse West End got an early shock when Chris Roberts gave Division Two Southey Social a fourth minute lead and John Mellor missed a great chance to double it. West End’s old warhorse Spencer Taylor then showed him how to finish to make it all square at the interval and despite an outstanding performance by the Southey keeper, goals from Dale Fuller and man of the match Dave Kippax saw West End through. Millhouses Thermolast took the lead at home against Colley when the rebound after Danny Turner’s header was saved was turned home by David France, but their joy was short lived as a Will Wood pass set up Lee Campbell to level. It stayed like that until near the end when another Turner header this time beat the keeper and Rob Gardiner finished Ben Woodman’s pass to seal it. CBC Premier leaders Ecclesfield 147’s progress was more straight forward with a Craig Senior treble and one each for Jayson Reeves and Gavin Hunter goals giving them a 5-0 win at The Park. Like the majority of !47’s goals this season, most of them came in the second half, while The Park won plenty of friends for their approach, as did the stand-in referee. Macron Cup holders Stannington Village also came through comfortably with an Ali Mitchell double and one each for Jack Ridge and Josh Coulson giving them a 4-0 win at Handsworth Old Boys. The biggest win was The Vine’s as Rikki Davidson’s four and Joe France’s three after Danny Seaman’s early goal gave them an 8-1 win at Crookes & District. Matt Hartley grabbed the home side’s consolation. Three all-Division One ties brought no fewer than twenty two goals between them. Ten came at Pitsmoor Royal Oak where Bulls Head raced into a two goal lead with Mark Bryant and Kerry Dixon strikes. A Scott Spzajer treble and two from Luke Parwana more than cancelled them out even though Joe Keighley added a third for Bull. Bryant then grabbed his second to give Oak a nervous few minutes until Leon Stocks made it safe. Woodhouse Angel were never behind as they won an eight goal thriller at Heeley Crown. Angel took the game to Heeley and finally took the lead when Lee Marshall latched onto a Gareth Simons through ball and lobbed the advancing keeper. That work was undone when a defensive error let Gary Sidebottom in to equalise, but Angel regained the lead before half time when Kirk Smith beat the offside trap and slotted under the keeper. Gareth Simons then added a third after a run that started in his own half and they increased it when Marshall followed up after his first attempt was blocked. Chris Edwards solo run pulled one back for Crown, but after a delay following an injury to Lance Dixon, Marshall completed his hat-trick to make Alex Temprell’s third for Crown just a consolation. After drawing with each other in the previous two games, Brinsworth Whitehill’s visit to Anston Athletic was a close affair for a third week in a row. Shaun Turner put Brinsworth ahead, but it was cancelled out before half time by Ben Sargeant. Gavin Jones eventually restored Brinsworth’s lead before Jamie Ward sealed a victory that was marred for them by yet another injury to Thomas Kirby after he had just returned from a long lay-off. Another eight goals came at Division Two Red Lion who eventually lost out to Division One Anvil. Kevin Bly put Lion ahead after a goalmouth scramble, but they threw it away when Joe Griffiths passed back to a keeper that wasn’t there. Matt Asher and Richard Ashton goals then put Anvil in control, until Lion roared back with a second from Bly and one from Phil Reynolds. Anvil then needed keeper Paul Brook to stop Lion from brushing them aside and his work was rewarded when two more from Asher put Anvil through. Division One Niagara fell behind at Old Harrow when Liam Peace put the home side ahead, but Niagara levelled before the break when James Shepherd tapped home. A Luke Jones penalty restored Old Harrow’s lead after half time, but Niagara levelled a second time with a Ryan Sorby header, before Sorby won it for them when he deflected home a Shepherd shot that was going wide. Division 2 - Betts double is big News In Division Two, a Rees Betts double and one from Chung Ho Shing gave Birley Moor News victory over Junior Blades for a first win of the season that lifted them off the foot of the table. All Birley’s goals came in the first half, but they were made to sweat after the Blades hit back through Joe Grapes and a diving header from his brother Tom reduced Birley’s lead to just a single goal. Darren Lister turn and shot in off a post gave Aston Mayerton a first half lead at home to Oughtibridge Village and despite some spirited resistance from the visitors, Aston sealed the win with a twenty five yard Steven Jeffries strike. |
