CBC
Premier - West End
back in the groove, while The Park on the rise
It was a good day for CBC Premier leaders Woodhouse West End. While they completed the double over Laycock Sports, the four clubs below them all failed to win and just as happy was The Park after their 4-0 victory over fellow strugglers Lord Nelson saw them climb off the bottom and out of the relegation placings for almost the first time this season.
Even though Division One leaders Oxspring United's game was postponed it was a similar story for them with the two sides directly below them both crashing to defeat. Division Two leaders
Fairbank-Rhodes also had a good day as they beat one of their main title rivals, Park &
Arbourthorne.
Steve Morris's ten yard strike and Jamie Walters volley had Woodhouse West End and Laycock's level after half an hour, but a second goal for Walters had West End in front by half time. Laycock's tried to get back into the game after the break, but the result was sealed when Ashleigh Atkins was brought down in the area and Rob Cowlishaw stepped up to score from the spot.
Second place Woodhouse George looked to be on their way to three points at fourth place Redmires after Michael Blythen and Wes Pierce strikes had given them a two goal half time lead and had it not been for three terrific saves by keeper Karl Tiler the game would have been beyond the home side. They proved to be even more vital as Redmires came storming back after the break and James O'Connell met a corner perfectly to pull one back, before full back Luke Siggs met another corner to give his side a share of the points.
It was an even worse story for third place Niagara as they crashed to defeat at Stannington Village and it would need a miracle for them to lift the title. Niagara fell behind after just ten minutes when Robin Elliott crossed for Steve Taylor to head home and even when their equaliser came it had more than a hint of controversy about it with many claiming a handball before Tom Staniforth turned the ball home. Niagara nearly fell behind when Josh Wright went close after a one-two with David Hague, but Stannington finally did get a winner when Wayne Bird broke through to set Wright up for a shot that went in off a post.
Hemsworth Villa handed debuts to four players at home to Pen Nook and their lack of familiarity with their team mates might have contributed to their loss of two points. Both sides did well to cope with a tricky wind and for a long time neither side looked likely to concede, but the breakthrough finally came Villa's way when Paul Jenkinson headed down for Lee Rodgers to fire home. Nook have a good away record though and they grabbed a deserved share of the spoils when Craig Thickett shot home from the edge of the area.
Jamie Hill saved a first half penalty as The Park battled to keep the game scoreless as their visitors Lord Nelson failed to make the best of the strong wind behind them, but The Park showed them how to do it after the break with Joe Barker, Ricky Needham, Lee Bridges and Bill Sharp all finding the net to send their side zooming up the table.
Handsworth WMC had keeper Tom Bryan to thank for keeping them level at the interval at Stocksbridge Park Steels and it was still pretty even in the second half, but Handsworth began to have more of the game and after Danny Franklin had had one tipped over the bar and Eddie Holes had also gone close, full back Gareth Taylor crossed for leading scorer Robert Pratt to fire home what turned out to be the game's only goal.
Division
One - Marrison
treble hits Loxley and Senior service for Travellers
When Division One leaders Oxspring United's home game with Pitsmoor Hotel was postponed, they knew victory for Loxley at Telecom Sports would see them take over at the top, but Oxspring needn't have worried as some expert finishing saw Telecom run out 4-0 winners.
John Bailey went close for Loxley early on, but it was to be Telcom's leading scorer Paul Marrison's day. After tapping in the opener in the first half, after the break he met Lee Johnstone's cross to double the lead and completed his hat-trick when he met Adam Podmore's cross. Loxley tried to respond and Bailey hit the bar, but just to add insult to injury Johnstone added a fourth for Telecom direct from a corner.
Third place Royal Oak Pitsmoor's title challenge has come unstuck after Mosborough Royal oak inflicted a third successive defeat on them. Andy Marsh marked his return to Mosborough with the opener and Joe France headed their second before the break. Royal Oak Pitsmoor tried to respond after the break and Kev Schofield pulled one back, but they couldn't force another and the points went Mosborough's way.
Ecclesfield Travellers made no such mistake as they stepped up their title challenge with a 6-2 victory at bottom club Half Moon. Although the game was level for thirty minutes once Craig Senior had headed the first home the result never looked in doubt. Senior rounded the keeper before hitting home the second, Danny Tuehy made it three and Scott Johnson ended his fifteen match goal drought with the fourth. Nathan Kingswood pulled one back for Moon, but Senior tapped home to complete his hat-trick and Glen Bell made it six before Richard Wallett grabbed another consolation for Moon.
Both Woodseats Abbey and their visitors Fletchers will know that their draw will have done nothing for either side's promotion hopes. Fletchers took the lead when Mark Groves headed Simon Marcus's free kick home, but when Tom Colclough was brought down in the area, Ryan Barker stepped up to beat keeper Karl Whitby. Abbey then had a great chance to take the points when Whitby brought Ross Morris down in the area, but he re-deemed himself by saving skipper Liam Colclough's spot kick.
Division
Two - Steve the
right Birks for Fairbank, while Cutlers and Millhouses travel well
Park & Arbourthorne knew they would take over at the top if they could win at leaders Fairbank-Rhodes, but Park shot themselves in the foot when Danny Moat was dismissed for two yellow cards after just ten minutes. They still had a good share of the game, but they fell behind just before half time when man of the match Steve Birks outmuscled Simon Windle before beating keeper Steve Whitehead.
Birks was on target again early in the second half to put Fairbank in control and although Paul Wheatley and Darren Knowles combined to set up Danny Adkins to pull one back for Park, they couldn't force another and Fairbank stay top.
Hot on their heels though are Cutler Arms who scored four first half goals to take command of the game. Steve Cousins grabbed two, while Chris Melton and Chris Edwards netted the others and although Angel did better in the second half they couldn't stop Anthony Lewis-Sydney netting his first goal for two years and Kenny Brakes from adding a sixth.
Sportsman Stannington's title hopes took a blow as Millhouses Abacrombie improved their own chances. Although Tom Gardner missed a first half penalty for Abacrombie, they did take the lead when keeper Mark Davis's long clearance paved the way for Joe Keeting score, but Chris King had Sportsman level by the break. Although Davis had to make two important stops after the break, it was Abacrombie that took control and Gardner made up for his earlier miss to restore their lead, before Ally Berry and Will Dunwell made it save.
Civil Service's chances of getting into the promotion race took a real blow when they were held by bottom club Lisano Giants. Service had the lions share of the game and it looked like they would win it when Dave Whitby hit his ninth of the season with just five minutes remaining, but the Giants had worked hard to protect their goal and they deservedly took a surprise point when Ali Bibi fired home from the penalty spot as the game went into injury time.
Another late goal saw Hollin Bush rescue a point at home to Colley Club. The games best move was finished off in style by Delroy Palmer to give Colley a fifteenth minute lead and although they couldn't add to it, it looked as if it would be enough until Jodi Loy popped up with almost the last kick of the game to save the day for Bush.

Division
One - Loxley Over
the Moon
In the only League game to survive the recent heavy rain, two first half goals gave Loxley victory over Half Moon to lift them to second place in Division One and they are now just three points behind the leaders.
Loxley almost took the lead after five minutes, but Geoff Mayfield headed wide from Mo Hamed's pinpoint corner and soon after John Bailey twice set Simon Mirfin up only to see the keeper save both efforts, but the pressure eventually had to tell.
A swift move saw overlapping full back Danny Bray put in a great cross and Mayfield made up for his earlier miss with a sweet volley into the roof of the net. Carl Wells almost made it two when his shot shaved the outside of the post and Loxley went close again when the Moon keeper made a terrific save to deny Bailey.
It was almost one way traffic at this stage and another goal just had to come and when Carl Wells put Mirfin in on goal he made no mistake to see Loxley go into half time with a two goal lead.
Despite some tired looking legs, Half Moon did better in the second half as their defence worked hard to keep Loxley at bay, but Loxley, with man of the match Simon Mirfin controlling midfield, never looked like relinquishing their lead and they could have extended it further.
Bailey went close with a diving header and John Denton also put a header wide, but it wasn't all Loxley and their keeper Gareth Turner made a brilliant save to turn a long range shot round the post. The other man to recieve praise from both sides was referee Simon Hunter and his performance contributed to making it such a good game in conditions that were less than ideal.
Sunday
Junior Cup - Oak
Starstruck by Movietime
The only other game to survive the weather saw Mosborough Royal Oak's miss out on a Sunday Junior Cup semi final place when they slipped to a narrow defeat by Worksop's Movietime.
After not playing for five weeks, Oak looked decidedly rusty and they paid for a slow start when Movietime took the lead on fifteen minutes with a free kick. Oak continued to make any impact in the first half, but just when it looked as if they would go into the break just one goal behind they lost concentration at a corner and the cross eluded everyone to double movietime's advantage.
Oak final woke up after the break to take control of the game and such was their dominance, that their keeper hardly touched the ball. Joe France finally made intense pressure pay to reduce the arrears, but try as they may, they couldn't pierce the well organised Movietime defence a second time and it was the Worksop side that progressed to the semi finals.

League
Cup - A Double Bailey's
sinks Laycock's and Davis four hits Abbey
The League Cup continued to be a graveyard for CBC Premier sides as John Bailey celebrtated his Peak Performer award by hitting the first two goals as Division One Loxley came from two goals down to beat Laycock Sports in the Quarter Finals and they are joined in the semi finals by Pitsmoor Hotel after Gavin Davis hit four goals in their victory over fellow Division One side Woodseats Abbey.
Loxley thought they had taken the lead early on only for Simon Mirfin's effort to come back off the bar and just past the half hour mark, Laycock's took advantage of their good fortune when good work by Paddy McWilliams set Danny Milner up for the opener.
Things got worse for Loxley ten minutes into the second half when John Denton upended Milner in the area and Simon Bartles stepped up to double Laycock's lead. It looked all over for Loxley, but the defining moment came after seventy minutes when Steve Morris handled unnecessarily in the area to earn the second yellow that saw him dismissed and give Bailey a chance to pull one back from the spot.
Mirfin hit the bar again after that, but it was Loxley's keeperRichard Walker that really kept them in the game with a string of saves and his side gained their reward in the final minute of normal time when Bailey got the slightest of touches to Mirfin's corner to send the game into extra time.
Although extra time saw Loxley begin to dominate, Walker still had to make a couple of vital stops from the dangerous Milner and Laycock's ten men must have thought they had done enough to to take the game to penalties, but in the final minute substitute Mick Smith cut in from the wing to drill low past the keeper and take Loxley to the semi finals for the first time.
Pitsmoor Hotel also came from a goal down to become the third Division One side to reach their first semi final as four Gavin Davis goals helped them to a 5-2 victory at fellow Division One side Woodseats Abbey.
Although Joe Mothersole gave Abbey the lead, two Davis strikes quickly had Pitsmoor ahead, but the teams went in the break level after Mark Richards headed home. With the elements in their favour in the second half, Pitsmoor took control as davis plundered two more and Scott Sjazers confirmed their semi final spot with their fifth.
CBC
Premier - Stocksbridge
Steel ends West End run
There was also a big shock in the CBC Premier as leaders Woodhouse West End dropped their first points of the season in a 4-0 crushing at a Stocksbridge Park Steels that started the day in the bottom three.
West End were unable to break an organised Steels defence and Steels keeper Ian Bishop only had one save of note one during a first half when West End had the winds at their back. The visitors knew they were going to be up against it after the break when it was their turn to face the elements and it wasn't too long before West End found themselves behind.
Adrian Tazziman has got a reputation as a dead ball specialist and he didn't disappoint when he drilled a corner straight into the net. West End obviously hadn't learned their lesson the first time as Tazziman doubled his side's advantage with a repeat from another corner and Steels victory was made even more comprehensive with a third from Matt Price and a fourth from Adam Todd.
Niagara also left their scoring until the second half as they beat Lord Nelson to climb back into third. Nelson had failed to make the most of several good chances that came their way in the first half and they were eventually made to pay with just fifteen minutes remaining when man of the match Liam Pigott put Niagara in front. Sub Craig Foster then came on to score with a spectacular pin point header before adding his side's third following a one-on-one with the keeper and he almost completed a quick fire hat-trick, but his spectacular volley came back off the bar.
Hemsworth Villa revived their title chances with a hard earned home win over a depleted Handsworth
WMC. It took Villa just four minutes to nose in front when Scott Moat chipped over the Handsworth defence to give Ian Holmes a chance he rarely misses, but Handsworth began to get more into the game and they thought they had levelled when Danny Franklin netted, only to see it ruled out for offside.
With Robert Pratt pulling the strings in midfield, after the break Handsworth continued to have their fair share of the game and both Dave Cawrey and Jamie King went close, but Villa always looked dangerous on the break and in injury time Jimmy Hughes netted their second to make the points safe.
Stannington Village's title bid took another blow when they were held at home by a Pen Nook that started the day at the foot of the table, but who will count themselves very unfortunate to not take all three points.
Ben Palmer flicked a corner on for Josh Wright to give Stannington the lead, but new signing Mark Barraclough levelled when he was played in by Danny Mclean and had it not been for two terrific saves by Stannington keeper Ben Ashton, Nook would have gone home with all the points.
Division
One - Oak sliced by
Fletchers
The one game to survive the weather in Division One saw second place Royal Oak Pitsmoor miss out on a chance to close the gap at the top of the table with a home defeat by Fletchers. Oak couldn't get their normal game going and after failing to make the most of the few chances they created they were undone when Simon Marcus's free kick from just over the half way line deceived everyone to fly straight into the net for the game's only goal.
Division
Two - Knight rides
in to lift Fairbank back to top and Cutlers hit back to beat Millhouses
Two
Joe Knight goals helped Fairbank-Rhodes come from two down to beat
Sportsman Stannington and reclaim top spot, while Cutlers Arms also come
from two down to get back to winning ways against Millhouses Abacrombie.
Fairbank-Rhodes climbed back to the top of Division Two after they came from two goals down to beat title rivals Sportsman Stannington. Johnny Davis and Chris King put Sportsman two up in a first half when they had the wind at their backs, but when Fairbank had the elements in their favour they soon pushed Sportsman back.
Joe Knight pulled one back, but they still looked to be slipping to defeat until, with just two minutes remaining, Knight struck again. Sportsman were now hanging on for a point, but even that slipped away from them when a penalty was awarded for handball in the final minute and Matt Nestor stepped up to hit Fairbank's winner.
After suffering their first defeat the previous week, Cutlers Arms must have thought they were going down to their second when they found themselves two goals behind fellow title hopefuls Millhouses Abacrombie, but a second half fight back saw them hit back to preserve their 100% home record and get their title bid back on track.
Tom Gardner headed Millhouses in front only to see Chris Nelson set Scott Smedley up for an immediate equaliser, but they were soon back in front when Ally Berry got onto the end of Sam Bartram's free kick and when Paul Armitage flicked on for Joe Keeting to hit their third the points looked to be going their way.
Cutlers had other ideas though and Smedley pulled one back with a twenty five yarder into the top corner, but when their equaliser came it had more than an element of luck as Pete Hill knew little about the deflection that turned the ball past the Millhouses keeper. The turnround was completed late in the game when Cutlers were awarded a controversial penalty, but Alex Temple stayed calm to slot the ball home and preserve his side's record.

League Cup - Travellers
have a Senior moment to break Steel
Yet another cup giant bit the dust in this season's League Cup as a
Craig Senior moment gave Division One Ecclesfield Travellers victory at CBC Premier and former holders Stocksbridge Park Steels.
Both teams had cancelled each other out during ninety minutes and with neither side finding a breakthrough the game went into extra time. In the first half of extra time it looked as if Stocksbridge would eventually break the deadlock when Adam Todd rounded the keeper and hit the ball towards the empty net, but
Shane Whittles seemed to come from nowhere to deflect the ball against a post and clear.
It proved to be the turning point as Ecclesfield, with sub Danny Touhey, back after two years out with a cruciate injury, causing the Steels defence all sorts of problems, began to get on top and in the second half of extra time leading scorer Craig Senior raced onto a ball over the top of the Steels defence before sliding it under the advancing keeper for the winner and give his side a first ever place in the League Cup semi finals.
The day's other quarter final between Division One Mosborough Royal Oak and CBC Premier Handsworth WMC was postponed and will now be re-scheduled for a date in February.
CBC
Premier - Woodhouse
takes a grip on the title race, while The Park get a lift
Wins
for both Woodhouse West End and Woodhouse George saw them open up a gap at
the top, while Redmires go third with victory at Pen Nook. Stannington
Village hammer Lord Nelson, while The Park get their second win of the
season against Niagara to climb off the bottom.
Despite a very heavy pitch, both Woodhouse West End and visitors Laycock Sports created openings with some neat passing football. Dave Kippax's header looked to be going in to give West End the lead, but it came back off the bar, but Laycock's responded with a move that left Danny Milner with a shot at goal.
The opener came when the West End defence was slow to move out and Steve Morris's cross was headed home by Gary McWilliams to give Laycock's the lead. West End responded by putting the Laycock's defence under pressure and another header came back off the bar, but Milner should have doubled Laycock's lead when he beat the offside trap only to shoot wide.
West End finally got the break they wanted when they were awarded a penalty in first half injury time and their man of the match Rob Cowlishaw stepped up to level the scores. Although the second half saw both teams have chances, it was West End that took
their's. Ashley Atkins grabbed two, James walters added another and David Haley finished the scoring with a brilliant diving header to leave West End 5-1 winners.
Woodhouse George stay right behind their local rivals after a 3-0 home win over another of the title chasers, Hemsworth Villa. The result may well have been very different had Ian Holmes not had his effort cleared off the line before George took the lead with Chris Towey's 25 yard thunderbolt. Ryan McGuiness then started and finished a move to double George's lead and Michael Blythen killed off any lingering hopes Villa had in typical fashion from fifteen yards. There was also a big praise for referee Mr D Swift for his handling of this top of the table clash.
Villa's loss gave Redmires the chance to grab third place and they did so with both hands, winning 4-1 at Pen Nook. They were given a helping hand when Danny Lindley's in-swinging corner was knocked into his own goal by a Nook defender, but Nook rallied to level through Danny McLean. They weren't level for too long though as Lindley began to terrorise the Nook defence and after the keeper could only parry his shot, the ball fell invitingly for Andy Birks to tap home. Lindley's pace continued to trouble the home defence right through the second half and it was no real surprise that he twice showed the defence a clean pair of heels to add Redmires' third and fourth.
Another side to climb above Villa was Stannington Village after they suddenly found their best form to hammer Lord Nelson 8-2. Simon Bradbury started the rout off and John Grayson added a rare strike before Bradbury headed his second. David Hague netted a fourth before the interval and soon after the break Bradbury took his personal tally to four with two more. Lee Barringham netted Nelson's first consolation, but Ben Palmer had netted Stannington's seventh before Nathan Hurst hit Nelson's other, which left sub Dave Milner to round the scoring off for Village.
The Park were boosted by Joe Barker's return from Australia and they quickly showed that they are going to give their all in an effort to avoid the drop. Alex McKenzie gave them a first half lead against Niagara and even though Liam Pigott levelled for the visitors from the penalty spot, Barker was on hand to restore The Park's lead and Lee Bridges made only their second win of the season safe with their third.
Division
One - Oxspring take
a grip of top spot as the promotion race hots up
Oxspring
Lowood beat Royal Oak Pitsmoor in the battle of the top two, while Loxley,
Pitsmoor Hotel and Telecom Sports all gain vital wins in the promotion
race.
The
big game saw leaders Oxspring United travel to second place Royal Oak Pitsmoor and it was the leaders that came out on top to gain revenge for their only defeat of the season. Their was an element of luck about their opener though as Phil Cookson's in-swinging corner deceived everyone to fly straight into the net to give them a half time lead. The second half wasn't too old when Anthony Rodgers netted to drag Oak level, but his work was undone when Andy Jones's weak header fell for Andy Taylor to beat the Oak keeper. After that Oxspring looked comfortable and never really looked like dropping the points this time round.
Loxley improved their title chances with a convincing win over a Fletchers side that had been one of the in-form teams before the Christmas break. Simon Mirfin's slide rule pass allowed John Bailey to beat the offside trap to give Loxley the lead and Chris Whalley hammered home from twenty five yards to double it before the break. John Denton headed home Loxley's third before Mick Smith laid the ball on a plate for Bailey to hit his second. Gary Cooper netted a consolation for Fletchers, but Bailey had the final say to complete his hat-trick and take his tally to sixteen league goals.
Telecom Sports have plenty of games in hand on all the other title rivals and they did their chances no harm at all by beating Woodseats Abbey 5-2. Abbey started the day with the best defensive record in the division, but the warning signs came early on when only a great penalty save stopped Lee Johnstone giving Telecom the lead. Telecom weren't to be denied for long though and Richard Ford gave them the lead with his first of the season and it was quickly followed by another from Danny Mace. Johnstone then made amends for his penalty to make it 3-0 by half time.
There was no let up after the break with leading scorer Paul Marrison adding two more, the second being a great header from Joe Shaw's cross. They did take their foot off the pedal after that, but Chris Leek and Liam Colclough's goals for Abbey were nothing more than consolations.
Another side to hit top form was Pitsmoor Hotel who destroyed Oughtibridge Village 9-2. Despite first half goals by Danny Hill and James Mace, Village were never in the game as Gavin Davis netted three, Scott Sjazers and Tommy Fowler two each, with Layne Rigdon and an own goal completing the rout for Pitsmoor's biggest win of the season.
Division
Two - Old Boys smash
Cutlers record as Park go top
Cutlers
Arms unbeaten record was smashed by Handsworth Old Boys, but Park &
Arbourthorne go top with victory over Lisano Giants. Sportsman Stannington
and Millhouses Abacrombie both win, as do Hollin Bush to put a halt to
Colley Club's revival.
Cutlers Arms lost the leadership and the division's only unbeaten record as they went down 3-1 at Handsworth Old Boys. In a fairly even first half, Mark Jones grabbed the lead for the Old Boys only for Scott Smedley to cancel it out before half time, but the second half was practically one way traffic as the Old Boys took control. Dean Smith restored their lead and Joe Barrett made the points and that first defeat for Cutlers safe.
That lifted the Old Boys above Cutlers, but they were denied top spot by Park & Arbourthorne who took it with a 7-2 victory over bottom club Lisano Giants. Park received a shocks though when Nadjo Mbikayi gave the Giants the lead, but Darren Knowles got onto the end of Danny Moat's free kick to cancel it out.
The Giants had another goal disallowed before half time, but early in the second half Mbikayi struck again to stun Park. The lead didn't last long again though as Danny Adkins struck and Park took control with two more by Adkins. Knowles netted his second before both Paul Wheatley and Mark Bingham added their names to the
scoresheet.
Sportsman Stannington are just three points behind the leaders after their 3-1 win over Woodhouse Angel, but they had to come from behind as Angel produced a real gutsy performance. Jim Linfoot's strike gave Angel a first half lead, but after the break Jason Collier levelled from the edge of the area before Brad Jerrison gave Sportsman the lead with his first of the season. Collier netted his second to make the points safe, but despite a weakend side Angel could hold their heads high.
Millhouses Abacrombie improved their title chances by hammering a Civil Service side they had already failed to beat in both league and cup. The game was barely thirty seconds old when Paul Armitage gave Abacrombie the lead with a diving header and another header from Tom Gardner soon doubled it. Gardner then hit his second from outside the area and Ally Berry made it four by half time after a one-on-one with the keeper.
After the break, Gardner completed his hat-trick before Richard Hodgson lobbed the keeper for Service's consolation, but the final say went to Abacrombie's Sam Bartram as he left the final score 6-1.
Hollin Bush started the New year in great fashion with just their second win of the season, winning 4-2 at a Colley Club that had been finding it's best form before the Christmas break. Darryl Palmer and Steve Whitworth's penalty provided Colley's two goals, but they were no match for Bush who climbed out of the bottom two with goals from Jordie Loy, Kyle
Kilham, Dan Cooper and Chris Haddock.
