George beat West End in Woodhouse Derby

On a day when the five CBC Premier games produced a staggering thirty four goals, champions Woodhouse George again cemented their place at the top of the table by hammering their local rivals Woodhouse West End 5-1. Dronfield Town also scored five at Crookes Club to keep their 100% start going and Stannington Village also have a perfect record after victory over The Park, but Redmires were the day's biggest hitters, thrashing a ten man Royal Oak Pitsmoor 8-2.

Woodhouse West End had beaten George the last time they met and it looked good for them again when Lee Glaves gave them a first half lead, but they couldn't hold on to it and Paul Hancock levelled with a header from a corner.

George then made three changes at half time and after Mark Coggin had given them the lead with a fortunate cross-cum shot, their power and pace proved too much for their visitors and further goals came from Wes Pierce, Shaun Waller and Michael Blythen. It had been a great game though and both sides were full of praise for the part the man in the middle, Mr Hodgett, had played.

Danny Gibbons was on target again with two more for Dronfield Town as they came away from Crookes Club with a 5-3 victory, but in the end they needed plenty of resolve to hang onto all three points. Sean Boyd, Pete Myers and Nick Horsfield hit Town's others, but Crookes were never out of it thanks to Paul Jennings, David Rowe and Daniel Bennett strikes and they were left frustrated by a missed penalty and the woodwork.

Stannington Village are the third side to maintain a perfect start with a 4-2 victory over The Park. Two from Shane Toulson and one from Wayne Bird gave Village a three goal half time lead and although Ed Colton and Ryan Marshall both netted for The Park in the second half, Simon Howe made the points safe from the penalty spot.

Luke Siggs gave Redmires an early lead at home against Royal Oak Pitsmoor and when an Oak defender saw red for handball on the line, Siggs doubled that lead from the penalty spot. Dan Peckett made it three before the break, but Oak didn't give up hope and early in the second half pulled one back through a John Mellor penalty.

A Graham Clarke free kick restored Redmires' three goal advantage and although Scott Empsey netted a second for Oak, the man advantage began to take it's toll and after Siggs had completed his hat-trick, Des Pyke and a Simon Bradbury double saw Redmires run away with it.

A trademark Ian Holmes volley gave Hemsworth Villa a first half lead at Handsworth WMC, but they surrendered it just past the hour when Robert Pratt fired home. David Cawrey then put Handsworth ahead and they should have sown the points up when they were awarded a penalty, but Villa's stand-in keeper Mark Hopkinson made a tremendous save to keep his side in it and his efforts were rewarded when centre half Stefan Harris headed home very late in the game.

Despite conceding their first goal in any competition, Burgoyne Arms are flying at the top of Division One after hammering Telecom Sports 10-1. Darren Firth did much of the damage, netting all his side's first five goals and Jonathan Dixon then weighed in with three before skipper Simon Marcus  and Bob Shaw made it double figures. Telecom's sole consolation came from Dean Grayson.

Burgoyne are just one of four clubs with maximum points though and right behind them are Bagshaw Arms after they came from behind to win 2-1 at Lord Nelson. Brian McGuire gave the home side the lead early in the second half, but Richard Dale levelled before Alex Yule headed Bagshaw's winner with just five minutes remaining.

Laycock Sports had an even bigger mountain to climb at Jordanthorpe Hotel after Jamie Sargent and a double from his brother Lee Sargent had more than cancelled out Sam Sequerra's early strike for Sports.. The second half was a different story though and Gary McWilliams netted before a brilliant solo goal from Lloyd McPherson brought the sides level. McWilliams then gave Laycock's the lead before Sam Sequerra made the points safe with his second after they had handed a debut to sub Chris Ross, brother of the Blades rising star Ian Ross.

Civil Service were looking to keep their impressive start on track at Oughtibridge Village and after Brett Cockayne had given them the lead, the result rarely looked in doubt. The points were eventually secured when Trevor Daniels marked his debut with a goal after being left one-on-one with the keeper.

Niagara looked on course to keep their perfect start going when Paul Cadman gave them a second half lead at home to Stocksbridge Park Steels 'B', but it had been a very open, end-to-end game and Steels gained their reward and a point with a Glen Chapman strike.

Oxspring United have been having a torrid time of late and it looked as if it was going to be another very bad day at the office when Daniel McLean and a Mick Furniss own goal gave Pen Nook a two goal lead, but for once Oxspring, with Paul Faxon outstanding, found some resolve and after Richard Parkin had pulled one back, Nook's keeper palmed Steve Wood's long throw into his own net to level. Their performance didn't get the reward it deserved though as Nook left with all three points when McLean picked up the loose ball after the Oxspring keeper had made a tremendous save.

Ecclesfield Travellers led Division Two at the start of the day, but despite Dave Hoyland cancelling out Scott Spiers early opener for the visiting Pitsmoor Hotel, they lost their unbeaten record and top spot after another from Spiers and two from Gavin Davies saw Pitsmoor take home the points.

Replacing them at the top on goal difference is Cutlers Arms, but they will be kicking themselves after twice letting the lead slip at Wadsley Bridge Travellers and seeing a penalty saved by Travellers keeper Paul Wharncliffe. Steve Butler put Cutlers in front only for Dave Gleeson to volley Travellers level, but Cutlers found their cutting edge again and Nathan Marsden put them back in front before half time. Travellers didn't give up though and deservedly took a share of the points when Neil Whitworth fired home.

Ball Boys claimed their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Lynthorpe Oak. Chris Hall and Chris Shirtcliffe's neat finish gave them a two goal lead and had it not been for Oak keeper Wayne Bralsford they would have had many more, but in the end Ball were left hanging after Thomas Abditch pulled one back for the visitors.

Woodseats Abbey also claimed their first three points of the season with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Capita Hartshead. Mark Richards headed them into the lead and after Paulo Messina had netted a second, Richards made it three before half time. Jim Linfoot pulled one back for Capita, but that was as close as they got and Jason Ball wrapped up Abbey's first win with his side's fourth.

In the County FA Sunday Junior Cup, Hollin Bush went through at the second attempt after their previous attempt had been abandoned due to a serious injury to one of their Pomona opponents. Thankfully, their was no such drama this time and Bush won it comfortably with Martin Edwards, Dan Cooper and Lee Sweet goals.

Nelson top the hit parade with sweet 16

In the first round of the County FA Sunday Cups it was a mainly successful day for with eighteen out of twenty one ties seeing Blades Super Draw League clubs go through and top of the column in the Sunday Junior Cup were Lord Nelson after their 16-0 romp at Beighton Falcons. Top of the hit parade was nine goal Brian McGuire, while Dave Thompson, Dan Corby, Andy West, Luke Holmes and Lee Sheedy chipped in with the others.

Not too far behind were Stocksbridge Park Steels 'B' who beat fellow Division One side Oxspring United 9-0. Richard Dale struck four of them, while Mick Smith grabbed a couple. Another Richard dale was also on target for Bagshaw Arms as they strolled to an 8-0 victory over Horse & Jockey. Alex Yule netted three of them while Scott Fitzgerald helped himself to a couple.

Two all-Blades Super Draw ties also saw big wins. Ryan Marshall hit four and Steve McMahan and Adam Parker two each for The Park who were easy 8-3 winners at Tosalisana and Daniel McLean and John Ward were among the goals as Pen Nook comfortably saw off Cutlers Arms 6-0.

Woodseats Abbey and Ecclesfield Travellers both pulled off shock wins at Division One sides. Jason Ball hit two and Mark Richards and Chris Leach one each as Abbey went through 4-0 at Oughtibridge Village, while Ecclesfield had an equally easy 5-1 victory at Civil Service.

Sam Sequerra soon had Laycock Sports in front at home against fellow Division One side Jordanthorpe Hotel and after Paddy McWilliams had grabbed a second, Sequerra made it three before the break. Jamie Sargent pulled one back for Jordanthorpe, but McWilliams second put a comeback beyond them.

Three other all-Blades Super draw ties were much closer affairs. Jonathan Dixion kept his record of goals in every game as his solitary strike for Burgoyne Arms was enough to win at Niagara, while a hat-trick for Hartley House's Craig Senior proved to be in vain as Loxley finally saw them off 5-3 with a Chris Barber double and one each for Joe Lilleyman, Simon Mirfin and Jon Rhodes.

Ball Boys victory over Wadsley Bridge Travellers was even closer. Blakeney and Riley goals for Ball were twice cancelled out by Nick Gleeson and Ian Sharland, but when Craig Woolley put Ball ahead a third time with just two minutes remaining, Bridge had no time to respond again.

Pitsmoor Hotel also had a late John Senior strike to finally see off Sheffield Arms after they had twice cancelled out goals by Luke Buwana and Gavin Davis, and although Royal Oak Pitsmoor were hoping to batter The Place, they had two John Mellor (pictured) strikes to thank for a narrow 2-1 victory.

Simon Smith grabbed two as Telecom Sports eased past Stannington Warriors 5-2, but a Jim Linfoot strike for Capita Hartshead wasn't enough to stop them going out 2-1 at High Green Rovers, while all Lynthorpe Oak had to show was a Steve Fairbank penalty as they went out 7-1 at Blue Bell.

With the score at 2-2, Hollin Bush's tie at home to Pomona had to be abandoned after one of the Pomona players suffered a badly broken leg, so they will probably have to try again next weekend.

Stannington take the Crown in Senior Cup

In the Senior Sunday Cup Stannington Village proved to be much too strong for New Crown Handsworth and Michael Barnes and Ben Palmer both found the net twice in a very comfortable 6-0 triumph.

Hemsworth Villa were almost as impressive as Ian Holmes and a Lee Webber treble gave them a 4-1 victory, while Dronfield Town also had few problems making progress, 2-0 at Banner Cross. Pete Myers gave them the lead with a terrific free kick and Danny Gibbons scored their second before half time.

Crookes Club were also too strong for visitors Shiregreen Rovers, with Kev Haigh, Andy Billings, Dave Rowe and Andy Thorpe goals gave them a 4-2 victory.

It looked as if Redmires would also go through without too much trouble when one from Andy Birks and two from Craig Gambling gave them a three goal interval lead at Pack Horse Inn. Their hosts came back strongly in the second half though and pulled two back, but with goalkeeper Karl Taylor in terrific form, Redmires held on.

Our only faller in the Senior Cup was Stocksbridge Park Steels 'A' who put on a very brave performance before going out to a single goal at holders Hoyland Town Jaguars. Steels need keeper Mick Ward to be at his very best to stay in the game, but the Jaguars were also thankful to their keeper when he brilliantly saved an Andy Hibbert penalty.

George hit five to go top

The weekend's only league game saw Woodhouse George climb to the top of the CBC Premier courtesy of a 5-0 victory at Handsworth WMC. Michael Blythen grabbed the opener after just five minutes and with Spencer Starkie, Mark Coggin and Kirk Briddon adding three more before the break, the game was as over long before Michael Towey added the fifth in the second half.

In midweek Redmires could count themselves a little fortunate to leave Royal Oak Pitsmoor with all three points. Scott Empsey deservedly gave Oak the lead early in the second half, but Luke Siggs took advantage of a mistake to hit Redmires level. Des Pyke powerfully headed Redmires in front from a Siggs corner, but they still needed a brilliant one handed save by Karl Taylor to hang onto the points.

Goals Galore sees Town go top

There was a real goal bonanza in the CBC Premier last weekend, with Dronfield Town leading the way when they took advantage of the wide open spaces of the Don Valley stadium to beat newly promoted Royal Oak Pitsmoor 8-3.

Nick Horsefield produced a sharp finish to put Town ahead, but it didn't last too long as John Clark smashed a free kick through the wall to level. Horsefield finished off a flowing move to put Town back in front, but Oak were also playing some neat football and Clark again grabbed a deserved equaliser.

Town's pace up front was a continual thorn in Oak's side and Danny Gibbons raced away to put Town back in front and soon after he added his second, then just before half time a slip by the keeper allowed Pete Myers speculative effort to cross the line to further increase Town's lead.

Both teams continued to play some tidy football, but it was Town that carried the greater threat and Horsefield's cross was finished superbly by Gibbons to complete his hat-trick, but Oak didn't give up and when they were awarded a penalty, John Mellor easily beat the keeper for their third.

Both sides were clearly enjoying playing at Don Valley and Horsfield made the most of the space a tiring defence offered him to hit his third and fourth to make the final score 8-3 to Town.

Champions Woodhouse George and Milk Cup winners Hemsworth Villa faced each other twice in the space of four days and it was George that twice came out on top.

They first met in the Steve Gee Merit Final at Bracken Moor where Villa started much the better and deservedly took the lead when Scott Moat beat the offside trap to round the keeper and score, and if they had taken just a few of the further chances they created they would have gone into the half time break with a lead that would have been hard to catch.

It was a different story after the break though and after George had tightened things up at the back, they began to get on top and it was no surprise when Wes Pierce levelled from close range. Further pressure eventually saw the Villa defence crack again with Michael Towey dribbling past two defenders before curling it into the far corner to win the trophy for a second season in succession.

They met again four days later and this time it was George that dominated the first half and lead through Chris Towey. Villa hit back after the break and Lee Webber brought them level and they had two great chances to go in front, but George soon made them pay for being so wasteful and ran out comfortable winners with a Michael Blythen double and one each for Spencer Starkie and Paul Robertson.

Woodhouse West End were also celebrating after Dale Fuller, Spencer Taylor and an own goal earned them their first three CBC Premier points from a comfortable 3-1 victory at Stocksbridge Park Steels.

Stannington Village maintained their perfect start as Michael Barnes, Shane Toulson and Kevin Bly goals gave them a 3-1 home victory over Crookes Club, while the Premier's tighest game saw The Park just pip Handsworth WMC by the odd goal in seven.

Lee Bridges put The Park ahead only to see Andy Stevens head Handsworth level and even though Scott Mickelthwaite put Park back in front just before half time, the second half wasn't too old when Karl Eaton again levelled for Handsworth.

Micheal Wood again put Park ahead and this time it was they who scored again through Adam Stringfellow, and even though Eddie Holmes grabbed a third for Handsworth, this time The Park held on for their first points of the season.

Division One's early leaders are Bagshaw Arms after James Sullivan, Mark Sanderson, Rob Smith and an own goal gave them a 4-1 victory at Oughtibridge Village, but they are just one of five teams that have maximum points.

Sam Sequerra and Paddy McWilliams both found the net twice as Laycock Sports comfortably beat Telecom Sports 5-1, and Darren Firth and Jonathan Dixon also both grabbed doubles as Burgoyne Arms beat Stocksbridge Park Steels 'B' 4-0.

A Lee Jubb header, a Wayne Stacey chip and Simon Hall's neat finish gave Civil Service a 3-0 home win over Oxspring United, while first half strikes by Ricky Parfisson and Simon Staniforth proved just enough for Niagara to win 2-1 at Jordanthorpe Hotel.

Pen Nook picked up their first points of the season despite falling behind to Danny Wilkinson's goal for Lord Nelson on the stroke of half time. Danny McLean levelled soon after the break and two late goals from super sub Mark Dobbs gave Nook their first win of the season.

Ecclesfield Travellers are the early leaders of Division Two after two Scott Johnson strikes earned them four points in the space of four days. His first gave them a point when it cancelled out Will Blakeney's goal for Ball Boys, but his second was all his side needed to defeat Loxley.

Just behind them are Cutlers Arms after Nathan Marsden and Greg McIntosh strikes first gave them a 2-0 midweek win at Hollin Bush and they were both on target again in an 8-3 victory at Ball Boys. Mark Franklin took the honours with three of the eight, while Will Blakeney's treble for Ball Boys was their only consolation.

Cutlers weren't the highest scorers though as Hartley House smashed nine past Capita Hartshead, but although the victory was emphatic in the end it doesn't tell the story of an enthralling game.

Capita looked likely winners when John Barnara and John Rhodes goals put them two up, but Craig Senior and Jamie Grayson goals then put the home side ahead. Paul Gregory levelled for Capita and with little more than ten minutes remaining, they looked good for a point, but Senior and Grayson both completed trebles and James Todd, Mick Smith and Martin Savage rubbed salt into their visitors wounds.

Despite Steve Fairbank cancelling out Daniel Goodwin's early strike, Hollin Bush also grabbed their first win of the season when a well worked free kick gave Paul Hanstock the opportunity to strike their winner.

Half Moon must have thought they were on their way to their first win, but despite doubles from Jason Barrass and Nathan Kingswood giving them the lead three times, they had to settle for a point in the end as Pitsmoor Hotel hit back with two from Gavin Davis and one each from Scott Spiers and Stevie Little.

After Kieran Harrison's strike had given them the lead, Wadsley Bridge Travellers came even closer to a first win, but Noah Manzi grabbed a share of the spoils for Tosalisana in injury time.
