GEORGE GO TOP AFTER SCS TOPPLE MINNIES

With only their third win of the season, SCS Park climbed out of the CBC Premier's bottom three and knock Minnies off the top of the table, allowing Woodhouse George to take over at the top of for the first time with an 8-2 victory at Dronfield Talbot and it was a good day for Woodhouse as Division One leaders Woodhouse West End made it seven wins out of seven with victory at Oughtibridge Village.

Division Two leaders Loxley also slipped to their second defeat in a seven goal thriller at Burgoyne Arms, while Handsworth New Crown were celebrating their first win of the season after a remarkable 6-4 victory at Ball Boys.

After a goalless first half SCS Park soon had Minnies on the back foot and quick goals by Joe Barker, Lee Bridges and Michael Wood gave SCS the kind of league their dominance deserved. Minnies tried to get back into it and were twice thwarted by the woodwork before they eventually grabbed a consolation from Wrigglesworth.

Woodhouse George quickly recovered from the shock of Mark Havenhand giving hosts Dronfield Talbot the lead and two goals from Chris Towey and one each from Michael Blythen, Chris Askey and Kirk Briddon gave George a 5-1 half time lead.

Richard Beck netted a second for Talbot in the second half, but they were again outscored by George as Blythen hit his second, Towey completing his hat-trick and
Shaun Waller.

Dronfield Town did better than their neighbours and came away from Handsworth Old Boys with a hard earned 3-2 victory. Shaun Boyd gave Town an early lead only for Jamie Moore to hit a long range leveller before half time.

Ben Castell restored Town's lead and Ian Parkes hit what turned out to be the winner as the Old Boys netted a second with a last minute Kevin Batty penalty.

Ian Holmes hit his second successive treble as Hemsworth Villa kept their improvement going with a 5-2 victory at Stocksbridge Park Steels 'A'.

Mark Hopkinson gave Villa the lead when he followed up a saved penalty and after Holmes netted his first two, Hopkinson completed a one-sided first half by heading Villa's fourth.

Steels improved after the break and Richard Gill and Chris Kelly pulled two back, but Villa's victory was confirmed when Andy Crossland crossed for Holmes to complete his hat-trick.

Woodhouse West End's domination of Division One continued as they went seven points clear with a 3-0 victory at an Oughtibridge Villa that were just a place behind them.

Spencer Taylor hit a spectacular opener to give West End a first half lead and they made it their seventh win out of seven certain with second half goals from Sammy Glaves and David Haley.

Royal Oak Pitsmoor moved up to second place when a last gasp strike by Lee Clarke gave them victory over Crookes Club. David Rowe had given Crookes an early lead and even though John Mellor levelled for Oak from the penalty spot, Crookes still looked the more likely to win it, but the points went Oak's way thanks to Clarke.

Up to third are Redmires after they crushed Civil Service 5-1. Lee Rodgers netted Redmires' opener after fifteen minutes only for Service to level when Martyn Kitridge's deflected shot found the net.

Redmires were soon back in front when Ian Gambling raced through to hit a cross shot into the roof of the net and when Andy Birks was brought down in the penalty area, Chris Bethell stepped up to score Redmires third.

It was almost one way traffic after the break, with Service keeper Steve Warrington having to make save after save, but even he couldn't stop Rodgers netting his second and Bethell scoring a second penalty.

Telecom Sports put some space between themselves and the bottom three as a Rob Lawson treble helped them to a 4-2 victory at St Cecelias.

Lawson had given Telecom a first half lead when he headed Dean Grayson's cross home, but soon after the break The Saints levelled with a Stacey Sharif strike. Lawson restored Telecom's lead with a cheeky backheel, only for Ben Hilbert to again level, but Dean Grayson soon had Telecom back in front and Lawson confirmed their victory with his third.

In Division Two, it was a red letter day for Handsworth New Crown as they finally grabbed their first win of the season in a ten goal thriller at Ball Boys.

Even though Dave Carr's early goal for Crown was cancelled out by David Browse, Crown had a two goal lead at the interval thanks to Paul Messina and John Purdy's corner that flew straight into the net.

Ryan Buttery and Paul Renshaw extended Crown's lead, but Ball hit back through Browse's second and one each for Craig Woolley and Ryan Goodison. Crown had been unlucky not to gain that first win before, but this time they held on and that first victory was confirmed when Renshaw netted his second.

Division Two leaders Loxley looked top be on their way to victory when Geoff Mayfield and Mark Newman's first of the season gave them an early two goal lead, but hosts Burgoyne Arms are in a good run of form and two Darren Firth strikes had them level by half time.

After the break, Firth completed his hat-trick to put Arms in front and Andy Mitchell made it four with a terrific chip over Loxley's stranded keeper and even though Carl wells headed a third for Loxley, they couldn't find another.

That gave Lord Nelson the chance to regain the top spot, but after Matt Bray and Dave Thompson goals had given them a half time lead over Laycock Sports, they also slipped to defeat.

Mick Plumtree had netted Laycock's first half goal and in the second half ace marksman Sam Sequerra levelled for them before Simon Turner won it for them when his corner flew straight into the net.

That gave Pen Nook the opportunity to move up to second place, but it didn't look good when Simon Bralsford scrambled the ball home to give hosts Lynthorpe Oak the lead.

Nook hit back and Mark Woodcock levelled the scores with a brilliant solo effort and Ryan Cockayne had them in front by half time. After the break it was Oak's turn to hit back and Richard Tidy's strike looked like giving them a deserved point until Cockayne finished off the best move of the game to net his second and Nook's winner.

Stocksbridge Park Steels 'B' ended their run of four games without a win when they came from behind to take all three points at New Inn Norton.

Alex Yule gave the home side a first half lead and it still looked good for them with little more than twenty minutes left, but Steels substitute Warren Barton came on to change the game. He scored with one of his first touches and then instrumental in both Daniel McLean's goals that gave Steels victory.

Jordanthorpe Hotel maintained their unbeaten home record as doubles from Craig Green and Lee Sergeant and one from David Gooch gave them a comfortable 5-0 victory over Dynamo Hartshead.

Our last survivor in the County FA Senior Sunday Cup, Stannington Village, bowed out, but only after they had pushed Meadowhall Premier leaders Royal Earl to the limit.

Earl opened the scoring with a thirty yard scorcher and doubled their lead from closer in, but Lee Adnett pulled one back for Stannington and David Hague levelled things up before half time when he coolly slotted home from the penalty spot.

The second half saw Stannington constantly have their highly rated hosts on the back foot, but Earl went back in front in a rare break and despite even more intense pressure from Stannington they held on..

VILLA SMASH NINE, GEORGE AN TOWN GO OUT OF SENIOR CUP, BUT ARK, WEST END AND REDMIRES ALL GO THROUGH TO LAST 16 OF JUNIOR CUP

Although many of the games were hit by the freezing weather last weekend, Hemsworth Villa made things very hot for visitors Dronfield Talbot and sent them packing after a 9-1 demolition.

It was the only CBC Premier game that survived, but Dronfield probably wished it hadn't as they had to start with a much depleted side. It wasn't long before they went behind when Villa centre half Glynn Radford slammed home an early penalty and things quickly got worse for the visitors as Scott Moat scored a quick fire hat-trick before the interval.

Ian Holmes repeated Moat's feat early in the second half and although Talbot managed a consolation through Carl Harrison, it was Villa that finished the scoring with a header from Radford and a ninth from Connor Bell. It was Villa's third win in a row, but it's importance was emphasised as it took them out of the bottom three and up four places.

In Division One's only game of the day, Niagara looked set for their first win of the season when Simon Staniforth and Ricky Parsisson goals gave them a two goal lead at home to Royal Oak Pitsmoor.

It wasn't to be though as Oak first pulled one back with a John Mellor penalty and then earned a share of the points with a late goal from Adrian Jackson.

In Division Two, with leaders Loxley's game postponed, Lord Nelson was looking to go back to the top of the column, but missed the chance when they could only draw at home with Pen Nook.

It could have been much worse for Nelson as they were two down at half time after Mark Dodds and Lee Revitt strikes for the visitors and even though they had spent most of the second half camped in their visitors half, with just ten minutes remaining they were still those two goals behind.

Nelson never gave up though and David Swift pulled one back, before Liam Echart grabbed a deserved equaliser and they nearly won it with a Dave Thompson header.

Burgoyne Arms continued their impressive form and climbed three places by making it five games unbeaten with a 6-1 victory at Lynthorpe Oak.

Oak were only briefly in the game when a Steve Fairbank penalty briefly made it one each, but on the day they were no match for their visitors. Chris Greenwood bagged two of Burgoyne's goals, with the others coming from Simon Marcus, Darren Firth, Andy Mitchell and Danny Booker.

COUNTY FA SUNDAY CUPS

Blades Super Draw League sides had mixed fortunes in the County FA Sunday Cup competitions, with both Woodhouse George and Dronfield Town going out of the Senior Cup, but Noahs Ark, Redmires and Woodhouse West End all going through to the last sixteen of the Junior Cup.

Dronfield Town travelled to Worksop's top side Manton Club and looked comfortable during a goalless first half, but Town's youngsters began to tire during the second half and it was no surprise when Manton took the lead midway through the half. Town couldn't respond and Manton clinched victory with a second in the final minute.

Woodhouse George can count themselves the unluckiest team of the day when, despite playing for over an hour with just ten men, a single first half goal saw them go out to Meadowhall's Bradway.

The goal came after twenty minutes and soon after Chris Towey received his marching orders when he handled on the line, but Bradway missed the spot kick and after that George kept their visitors firmly on the back foot.

Shaun Waller hit a post and with more steadiness in front of goal George would surely have got at least the equaliser their performance deserved, but it wasn't to be and they went out.

Woodhouse West End had better luck in the Junior Cup and showed why they are one of the favourites to lift the trophy by beating Cutting Edge 7-0.

Spencer Taylor started the rout with a free kick that flew past the keeper and Alan Hull gave a repeat performance to double their lead. Taylor made it three, David Halley four and Lee Glaves five, before sub Lee Dolan grabbed a sixth.

West End then brought keeper John Badkin out of goal and he showed that if called upon he could do a job up front when he produced a brilliant lob over the keeper to complete the scoring.

Noahs Ark were twice behind to Crown FC, but their visitors from Wath found Adam Burley far to hot for them and former Blade's hat-trick proved decisive.

Wath took the lead after ten minutes and although Burley soon levelled from the penalty spot, Crown went back in front with a penalty of their own. Darren Coyle again levelled for Ark and Burley's second put them ahead.

Richard Bates doubled Ark's lead before half time, only for Crown to pull one back soon after the interval. That gave Ark a nervous few minutes, but the game was finally settled when Burley completed his hat-trick.

Redmires became our third side through to the last sixteen when a Lee Rodgers double helped them beat fellow Division One side Oughtibridge Village 4-1.

Rodgers outpaced the home side's defence to open the scoring for Redmires and Nick Milnes marked his return from injury with the second before half time.

Redmires stayed on top after the break and it was no surprise when Tom Lawrence increased their lead and the tie was over when Rodgers netted their fourth, but Oughtibridge kept plugging away and Ian Phillips netted a deserved consolation late in the game.

MINNIES LET IT SLIP

While the CBC Premier leaders Minnies were letting two points and a two goal lead slip at Dronfield Talbot, the pack behind them were getting ever closer as Woodhouse George brushed aside SCS Park and Freedom House blitzed an understrength Handsworth Old Boys.

Division One leaders Woodhouse West End are now the only side left with a 100 per cent record after Noahs Ark lost their's, while Division Two leaders Loxley widen the gap at the top with a narrow victory at Handsworth New Crown

It turned out to be a real Gray day for the Old Boys as Freedom's James Gray helped himself to four goals in a 7-1 victory. Gray's first two and one from Otis Pike had Freedom three up at the interval and although Dale Moore's terrific free kick briefly gave the Old Boys some hope, they were soon on the receiving end again and Shaun Ward, James Todd and another two from Gray finished them off.

It took Woodhouse George just ten minutes to get off the mark at SCS Park when Chris Towey headed home and Michael Blythen made it two on the half hour mark. Adam Parker gave SCS a glimmer of hope just before half time, but that was extinguished by a Kirk Briddon strike just five minutes into the second half.

Chris Askey added another soon after and even though Parker claimed his second for SCS, George had the final say when Blythen grabbed his second of the game.

Minnies got off to a flyer at Dronfield Talbot when Richard Wright volleyed them into a first minute lead and they looked to have three points sewn up when Alistair Mitchell doubled their lead, but Carl Harrison started Talbot's fightback just before half time and Rob Marriott's second half strike earned them a deserved share of the spoils.

Also catching Minnies up are Dronfield Town's youngsters after an Adam Fordham treble and two from Ben Castell gave them all three points at Moorview Ranges, but the game was also marred by a suspected leg break of Ranges' long serving player Jon Payne.

Ashleigh Fletcher and Ryan Douglas twice levelled for Ranges, but they were two down before the game was delayed by twenty minutes for Payne's injury and they did well to finish the game after their popular team mate was taken to hospital. We all wish him well.

Stocksbridge Park Steels 'A' climbed out of the bottom three with their second successive league win, 2-1 over Handsworth WMC, but they almost 'handed' their visitors a point with an incident that would have been a must for "What happened next".

Handsworth were hitting back after Nick Ward's header had put Stocksbridge in front and the Steels' keeper was fortunate to see a shot he pushed onto the post rebound back to him. He immediately threw the ball out to full back Adrian Tazziman, but he thought the referee had awarded a goal and caught the ball, leaving the referee no alternative than to award a penalty.

Carl Eaton slammed home the spot kick, but Handsworth eventually let the gift slip from their grasp when Chris Kelly grabbed a second half winner for the home side.

Woodhouse West End maintained their 100 per cent record and their seemingly unstoppable march towards the Division One title going with a 4-1 victory at St Cecelias.

After Lee Glaves had put the leaders in front midway through the first half, the Saints levelled with Alan Parkin's volley, but Glaves second had West End back in front before half time, and he completed his hat-trick before David Healey finished the scoring.

After Martin Edwards had given Noahs Ark the lead midway through the second half at home to Telecom Sports, they also looked set to maintain their all-win record, but the visitors ruined it when Dean Grayson slammed home a last minute spot kick.

After a poor start to the season, Oughtibridge Village are now up to second place following their 6-2 thumping of Oxspring United. Oliver Hague and Dave Hudson goals quickly had Village in command and even though Matt Haslam pulled one back from the edge of the area, the two goal margin was restored before half time by Dave Utley.

Things went from bad to worse for Oxspring in the second half and their goal came under a constant barrage and had it not been for several saves, including a penalty, by Oxspring keeper 'Geordie' Mick Wilson, the winning margin would have been much greater. As it was even Mick couldn't stop Hudson, Keith Hague and Danny Hill adding to the home side's tally before Matt Waring netted another consolation for the visitors.

After a goalless first half, Royal Oak Pitsmoor made it two league wins on the trot when second half goals from Dale Jackson and John Mellor's double gave them a 3-0 victory over Civil Service.

Redmires had now fewer than eight players out injured and even striker Luke Siggs played with a knock, but it didn't stop him giving his side a second half lead over Crookes Club.

Crookes' Paul Jennings failed to find the net for the first time in the league this season, but he did set up an equaliser for Dave Rowe. Pete Walton outpaced the Crookes defence to restore Redmires lead, but the visitors claimed a point when Rowe bagged his second late on.

If Division Two leaders Loxley expected a comfortable win at bottom club Handsworth New Crown they couldn't have been more wrong and even though they did eventually take the three points that keeps them at the top, Crown can count themselves unlucky not to get a share of the spoils.

Geoff Mayfield headed home Darren Foster's corner to give Loxley the lead, but Crown levelled before half time with a Dave Carr strike. After the break John Rhodes restored Loxley's lead with a cracker from the edge of the area and they extended it when Neil Coyle produced a stunning free kick, but Crown got back in it with a Jason Ball penalty and they came very close to getting an equaliser in the final few minutes.

It turned out to be a very good result for Loxley as all the other games ended in draws. Second place Lord Nelson looked as if they would be beaten at third place Ball Boys when goals from Ryan Goodinson, Matt Parkeson, Dave Browse and Craig Woolley had given the home side a 4-2 lead well into the second half, but Nelson eventually clawed their way back to a point thanks to a hat-trick from Brian McGuire and a special from Dave Thompson.

Fourth place Pen Nook met their very local rivals Stocksbridge Park Steels 'B' for a game that, after a slow start, turned out to be a real cracker. The nearest either side came to opening the scoring in the first half was when Steels hit the woodwork, but they eventually broke the deadlock five minutes after the break when Adam Todd slotted home.

Damien Smith wasted no time in equalising with a free kick that gave the keeper no chance and when Nook were awarded a penalty for handball, Smith smashed home his second to give his side the lead, but Steels got the point they deserved when former Nook player Andy Taylor set Daniel MacLean up and they might even have won it with a late disallowed effort.

Alex Yule kept up his remarkable scoring record for fifth place New Inn Norton in their local derby with Jordanthorpe Hotel, but it wasn't enough to win it as 'super sub' Paul Cusworth came off the bench to net a late equaliser for the home side.

Despite finding themselves on the back foot for most of the game, Burgoyne Arms looked as if they would complete a smash and grab victory over Laycock Sports when second half Darren Firth and Matt Levitt strikes gave them a two goal lead.

Laycocks never gave up though and even though Burgoyne keeper Chris Taylor was somehow keeping his side in front, Sam Sequerra again showed his pedigree for Laycocks and he earned them a more than deserved point with a brilliant finish and an even later penalty.

REDMIRES TAKE OUT STEELMEN AND NIAGARA FALL AT JORDANTHORPE

The 2nd Round of the ACC Milk Cup failed to deliver too many shocks with only one Premier league side falling to lower league opposition. First Division Redmires made the most of home advantage to inflict a 4-1 defeat on Premier Division strugglers Stocksbridge Park Steels “A”.

Danny Cross gave the Steelmen the lead before a Lee Rodgers header from Furness’ cross levelled it up at the break. Walton came on at half time and was soon prominent, setting up Craig Gambling to give Redmires the lead before two further strikes by Lee Rodgers, completing his second hatrick in a fortnight, ensured victory for Redmires.

The tie of the round saw Freedom House entertain Stannington Village in a repeat of last seasons Bramall Lane Final. Freedom were keen to avenge their defeat in that game and dominated from the start, creating numerous chances without converting any. This proved costly as Stannington, in a rare attack, took an interval lead through Kevin Bly. Freedom continued to have the better of things in the second half but ultimately paid the price for poor finishing as Bly added a second to wrap things up for the holders.

Premier league table-toppers Minnies faced a tough test against 5th placed Handsworth Old Boys. Minnies dominated the tie and took a deserved lead on 25 minutes through James Hird. At 1-0 the match was still in the balance though and it wasn’t until Leon Stones scored five minutes from time that the match was safe for Minnies.

Another all Premier affair saw Handsworth WMC host Moorview Ranges. Handsworth raced into a 3-0 lead at the break with goals from Varns, Taylor & Newton with Ryan Dunne’s second half strike a mere consolation for an under strength Ranges side.

There were five more Premier sides in action against lower league opposition and all came through their ties unscathed. Hemsworth Villa (pictured) triumphed over a Stocksbridge Park Steels “B” side who put up a brave fight, but nonetheless made it an unwanted double for the both the Steelmen teams. A debut brace by Andrew Crossland, hatrick from Lee Webber and a Glynn Radford strike completed a rather flattering 6-0 scoreline.

Dronfield Town travelled to Pen Nook and came home with a 4-1 victory. Damien Smith scored from the spot for Pen Nook but Town raced into a 3-1 lead at the interval with goals from Fordham, Kistell and Gange. Town added a fourth in the second half with a superb piece of flowing football culminating in Fordham sweeping home his second with three minutes left.

Dronfield Talbot made it a Dronfield double when they beat lowly Handsworth New Crown 4-1. Beck’s pass was converted by Mason, before Jason Ball levelled for the visitors. There was little to choose between the sides and it took until last quarter of the game before Talbot finally took charge. Player Manager Beck was involved again when his cross was flicked on by Havenhand and tucked into the corner by Smith. Nick Wells slide rule pass allowed Steve Adie to make it 3-1, before Wells cross was headed home by Mason for his second with the last touch of the game. The scoreline flattered the home side and Crown’s Jason Ball was the game’s outstanding player, causing Talbot’s defence problems and with better service he may have added to his one goal.

SCS Park recorded a comfortable 3-1 victory over Civil Service with two goals from Matthew Hill and one from Adam Parker. The Service consolation goal was scored by Paul Rodesthenous.

Woodhouse George recorded a comprehensive 11-1 victory over a spirited Burgoyne Arms. Wes Pierce bagged 4 goals, the Towney brothers Chris and Michael two a piece, with Michael Blythen, Andy Marples and Gary Waller completing the scoring for the visitors. The Arms grabbed a deserved consolation goal through Daren Firth.

A tight affair was expected when Crookes Club hosted Noah's Ark, so it was no surprise when Danny Bennett's opener was cancelled out by former Blade Adam Burley to bring the teams in level at the break. Burley showed his class in the second half though, adding two further goals to complete his hatrick.

Second Division newcomers Jordanthorpe Hotel beat Division one side Niagara 3-2 to progress to the last 16. Niagara took a halftime lead through Liam Hunt. The hosts turned things around in the second half though with goals from Cusworth, Waterfall and Spencer Colton giving them a 3-1 lead. Niagara pulled one back through Staniforth but it was too little too late for the boys in blue.

There were goals galore as Lord Nelson hosted St. Cecelias. Nelson lead 2-0 at the break with goals from Danny Goodwin and John Sanderson, but the Saints came marching back in the second half, taking a 3-2 lead with headed goals from Staniland and Walsh and strike from Stacy Sherif. Goodwin them handed Lord Nelson a late lifeline with his second, taking the match into extra time but further goals from Andy Fitzmaurice and two from Sherif, the last a 20 yarder to complete his hatrick, gave victory to the visitors.

It was another topsy-turvy affair as New inn Norton entertained Ball Boys. Ball Boys drew first blood when Parkeson fired home. Norton were soon level through Alex Yule and took the lead before the break when James Sullivan netted. Into the second period and the game took another twist when Gareth Simons equalised for the visitors. The game seemed destined for extra time when Richard Dale popped in the winner in the dying moments to give Norton the win.

Alan Crofts scored in either half to put Oxspring in command but goals from Lee Clarke and Matty Jackson levelled things up for Royal Oak Pitsmoor. Pitsmoor’s joy was short lived though, as further goals from Haslam and Cooper felled the Oak.

Telecom took an interval lead when Dean Grayson put them in front against Loxley. Loxley rallied in the second half when debutant Stephen Mayfield equalised. Things got even better for the visitors when Andy Hogg’s screamer gave them the lead. They couldn’t hold on though and a disastrous last ten minutes saw them concede three goals, Robert Lawson levelled before Grayson grabbed two to complete his hatrick, one of seven scored in this weeks games!

Woodhouse W E faced fellow Division One side Oughtibridge Village and took a commanding 2-0 halftime lead through Lee Glaves and Danny Hooper. David Hayley added a third and Kieron Curry completed the scoring with a consolation goal for Village to make it 3-1.

DIVISION 2

In the only league game played Lynthorpe Oak faced Laycock Sports - and they found the form of ace marksman Sam Sequerra too hot to handle, going down 5-1. Sequerra bagged a brace before halftime and added three more in the second half to make it five and earn himself a deserved man of the match award. Oaks sole reply came through a Richard Tidy goal.
