Phillips turns the screw in the title race –
Leaders Chapeltown RBL returned to winning ways with a hard fought 2-1
victory at Oughtibridge WM thanks to a Jed Phillips (left) winner and they
are now just two more wins from the title. Adam Thomas scored for OWM. It
took just 5 minutes for RBL to take the lead when Alex Mosley won the ball
and crossed for Jay Carter to score with a diving header. Luis
Afonso-Ferreira twice came close to doubling the advantage, but
Oughtibridge levelled when Josh Savage tripped an opponent in the box and
Adam Thomas scored with the penalty. Oughtibridge then shot themselves in
the foot when a poor challenge saw them reduced to ten men and the extra
man finally told when Mosley’s corner was headed home by leading scorer
Phillips.
Royal Earl kept pace with them with a Connor Chapell double helping them
to a 2-0 victory over Eckington and Stannington Village stayed in touch as
Luca DeFalco and Jack Holmes doubles helped them to a narrow 4-3 victory
over local rivals Wadsley Bridge Pheasant. Stannington took the lead when
Ben Cook found Shaun Flynn down the line and his pinpoint cross was met by
a DeFalco header that was too strong for the keeper. Pheasant hit back and
after one effort had come back off the woodwork, a Niall Wilkinson cross
deceived the keeper to level the scores. Stannington went back in front
when Jack Holmes played a one-two with Charlie Hobson before beating the
keeper.
The second half was end-to-end and Pheasant levelled a second time and it
was Wilkinson with his second, but almost immediately Stannington went in
front third time when DeFalco found Holmes and he netted hs second with a
left foot shot into the roof of the net. They increased their lead when
Joel Purkiss crossed for DeFalco to net his second. Pheasant didn’t give
up and George Rudd scored their third to make it a nervy finish, but
Stannington held on.
Joker Wickersley Youth CC kept a glimmer of hope in the title race as a
Ben Thornton double helped them to a 5-0 victory at an FC Inter stuck at
the bottom and played three games more than the teams above them. Jordan
Thomas opened the scoring and Thornton’s double made it 3-0 at the break.
The second half saw Inter have their best spell and only a good save by
Tom Corker prevented them pulling one back, but Joker regained control and
Alfie Bakes netted their fourth with a long range volley, before Alex Kemp
completed the scoring by finishing off a set-piece.

Dronfield beat
Reds to confirm promotion –
AFC Dronfield (right) were able to celebrate promotion to the CBC Premier
with a 2-0 victory at Mosborough Reds. Dronfield started quickly and only
an outstanding save by Reds keeper Luke Fogg kept the scores level, but
Dronfield did get their noses in front when Josh Millen’s shot was
deflected past Fogg by a defender. Finn Masterson doubled the lead before
half-time despite claims for a push on a defender. The second half though
saw Mosborough push Dronfield all the way. Jake Leonard’s free kick hit
the bar and Jak Hotchin missed a header when it looked easier to score.
The Dronfield keeper then made a good save to deny Matt Ellis and when
Hotchin did find the net with a header, the referee ruled the ball had
gone out before he scored.
A Louis Ballard treble
helped WH Crookes pull clear of the drop zone with a 4-2 victory at Sheaf
House. Sheaf scored five minutes before half-time through Khalid Qasem,
but Charlie Cope had Crookes level before the break. Ballard stole the
show in the second half to make it 4-1 before Jake Powell scored Sheaf’s
second.

DeFalco double
as Stannington hit back and Earl join them –
Luca DeFalco (right) scored twice as
Stannington came from two down at half time to beat Joker Wickersley Youth
CC 3-2 and take their place in their 7th Final. Joker took an
early lead when James Hardeman latched onto the ball on the 18 yard line
and hit the ball past the diving keeper. Ben Thornton then went close to
doubling the lead when he hit the post from distance, but soon after he
was more successful when he slid the ball home to give Joker a two goal
lead at half-time.
After the break only a world class save by Stannington keeper Harvey
Middleton from an Adam Daughtrey bullet stopped his side falling further
behind and his work gained further reward on the hour when the ball fell
to DeFalco and he smashed the ball into the top corner. It was soon 2-2
when a shot by Seb Robbemond was diverted home by DeFalco. Joker responded
and it took another fantastic save by Middleton to push Nathan Taylor’s
downward header round the post. Joker then had an effort cleared off the
line among a clutch of other close calls, but it was Stannington that
completed the turnround when Tom Staniland’s corner was headed home by sub
Jack Haslam
They will meet Royal Earl, who will be in their 3rd final after
skipper Jonno Williams tremendous early free kick sent them on their way
to a 3-0 victory over Woodman Intake. Earl doubled their lead when Alex
Rippon took advantage of some hesitant defending to force the ball home
with the help of a defelection. Earl continued to look threatening every
time they came forward but Tyler Crossland in the Woodman goal kept his
side in the game. The second half was much the same as the first with
Woodman finding it hard to make any impression on the Earl defence and
Crossland was much the busier of the two keepers. The goal that finally
settled the tie was a terrific solo effort by Joe Pearson, taking the ball
from the halfway line past a string of defenders before scoring.

Pheasant stun the leaders, and Platts is in 7th heaven –
Wadsley Bridge Pheasant stunned leaders Chapeltown RBL with a 2-1 victory
over them to boost their hopes of avoiding a bottom three finish. The game
started slowly and it remained goalless approaching half-time, but after
George Rudd had missed a glorious chance to put Pheasant in front, Chris
Steer showed him how to finish to give Pheasant the advantage at the
break.
Rudd
(left) had obviously learned the lesson as the second half was just a
minute old when he latched onto a long ball before volleying home to
double Pheasant’s lead. Pheasant perhaps should have increased their lead
further and almost paid for it when RBL made some changes and pulled one
back when Josh Savage rounded the keeper before sliding the ball home. RBL
pushed for the equaliser, but the Pheasant defence held firm without too
many scares and RBL suffered their first league defeat since October.
Chapeltown are still strong favourites to take the title, but it will have
given others more hope that they can catch them.
Another
to boost their hopes of avoiding the drop was Oughtibridge WM as Connor
Platts (right) scored seven times in an 8-3 win over an Eckington side
sliding dangerously close to the drop zone. Daniel Biggin and Adam Sydall
twice gave Eckington the lead and even after Oughtibridge got their noses
in front, Eckington made it 3-3 when Pat Stothard cross was turned into
his own net by a defender. Oughtibridge regained the lead just before
half-time and that gave them all the encouragement they needed and
Eckington just couldn’t stop Platts from scoring. Arnie Grayson netted
Oughtibridge’s other, but it was Platts that stole the show, setting a new
record for the League’s top division. It’s just over four years since
anyone else scored 7 in a League game - Jack Hawkes in a Division 2 game
for Brinsworth Phoenix, and it was just one short of the record 8 scored
by Michael Blythen in a Division 2 game for Cotts in 2015.

Dronfield
almost there, but South’s chances hit by Boynton –
AFC Dronfield need just one more win to confirm
their promotion to the CBC Premier Division after their 2-0 victory at
Mosborough Lions. Both goals came in the first half, with Ross Dawson
hitting the first and Sam Porter the second after Dawson had been brought
down in the area.
Jubilee Rangers stayed
hot on the heels of the leaders when they completed their home games with
a 2-0 victory over Mosborough Reds. A quick free-kick allowed Liam
Hill-Simmons to score early, but it was tight after that and it was late
in the game before Mason Hunt rounded the Reds keeper before scoring the
clincher.
Sheffield South’s
chances don’t look too good though after they suffered a heavy 7-1 defeat
by promotion rivals Boynton Sports. A Curtis Priday hat-trick, two from
Lee Jordan and one each for Issac Reardon and Jake Bonnett made Jim
Pollard’s goal for South of little consequence, but the result saw Boynton
climb above their hosts into third.

Cueball are
promoted, and Cotts stay in the chase –
Cueball became the first team to confirm promotion
this season as Travis Hodgson took his season’s tally to 23 with four in
their 6-1 win at Wadsley FC. Farrell Cawthorne and Matt Herrington netted
Cueball’s others, with Wadsley’s reply coming from Jordan Lewis.
Cotts
stayed in the promotion hunt after coming from three down to win 5-4 at
Royal Oak (Dronfield). Josh Sugden, Neil Rhodes, Jack Larissey and an own
goal gave Royal Oak a 4-1 lead at half-time. Michael Blythen’s first half
penalty gave them some hope and when Jacob Lally’s corner curled in to
make it 4-2 Cotts poured forward. When Joe Moaks was brought down just
outside the area, Sam Stacey produce an unstoppable free kick to make it
4-3 and Cotts levelled when a left wing cross was met by Alex Calton’s
left foot. Cotts completed the turnround when Andrew Swift’s cross was met
at the back post by Blythen (right) to score his second and the winner.
Norton Oaks earned their
first away win of the season with five different scorers at Steel City
Dons giving Oaks a 5-0 victory. Laurence Jeffrey-Badger’s corner was
tapped home by Jordan Noble for Oaks’ first and Jeffrey-Badger scored the
second with a free kick into the top corner. A Tom Blacksell penalty made
it three before half-time and after the break Tom Holden’s header was met
by Tom Adams looping toe-poke into the top corner. Holden completed the
scoring with Oks’ second penalty of the day. |

Earl narrow
the gap at the top but Stannington's hopes are hit by Joker, while Woodman
hit for Six –
An Alex Rippon double
helped Royal Earl to a 5-1 win at Wadsley Bridge Pheasant and narrow the
gap at the top. It was a dominant performance by Earl and as well as
Rippon’s double their others came from an own goal, Richard Tootle and Joe
Pearson, with George Rudd netting Pheasant’s consolation.
Stannington's chances of
keeping the title were hit when they could only draw 1-1 at home with
Joker Wickersley Youth CC. Observers said it was a top quality game that
was a great advert for the league. Joker started quickly and only some
terrific saves by Stannington’s keeper and the woodwork kept Joker out,
but Stannington grew into the game and had good chances of their own and
Seb Robbemond also hit the Joker woodwork.
It stayed goalless until
the second half when Jack Holmes picked the ball up on the halfway line
and after playing a 1-2 with Joel Purkiss, smashed the ball into the top
corner. Joker rallied and gained their share of the points when youngster
Jack Smith came off the bench to set Ben Thornton up to score. There was
more chances for both teams, but a game that could easily have been 5-5
ended 1-1.

Sheaf tame the
Lions to boost their survival hopes –
Sheaf House gained just their second win of the
season, 3-2 at home against fellow strugglers Mosborough Lions to boost
their survival hopes in the only Division One game to survive the weather.
Dan Beech gave Lions a first half lead and although he netted a second
goal in the second half, goals from Tom Duffield, Lestyn Jones and Aaron
Swaby gave Sheaf victory.
17 MAR – DIVISION 2 –
Wisewood go
top with hard earned win over Norton Oaks –
AFC Wisewood went back to the top of Division Two
with a hard earned 6-3 victory over Norton Oaks. Matt Civil and Charlie
Beachell both scored twice for Wisewood along with one each for Matt Ensor
and Cameron Foster, but Oaks gave them a real game. Wisewood went two up,
but Jack Higgins nutmegged Matt Cowen before hitting the bar and Tom
Holden followed up to score. Oaks levelled before half time when a deep
cross from Holden was picked up by Higgins and he curled the ball into the
net off the far post. Wisewood went back in front soon after the break,
but Oaks hit back to level again when Connor Boyle’s through ball was
finished by Higgins. Oaks only had a bare eleven and Wisewood took
advantage of some tired legs to win it with three late goals. |

Legion pull
further clear –
The CBC Premier leaders Champeltown RBL pulled further clear with victory
over FC Inter, despite Inter making a real game of it. A much changed RBL
team kept their recent run of good form going at home to FC Inter. Morgan
Cowell smashed the crossbar after a well worked moved. The first goal came
after a defence splitting ball by Connor Tonge found Jed Phillips who
opened up his body and placed the ball in the top corner on 38 minutes.
Two minutes later Mikey Vella made it 2-0 when Jacob Walkland’s deep cross
was volleyed home. Tonge made it 3-0 after a pass from Danny Booth,
cutting inside and finding the bottom corner from the edge of the area.
Booth got his second assist finding Morgan Cowell who beat his man and
fired home left footed to complete the scoring.
Wadsley Bridge Pheasant
improved their chances of avoiding the drop with a point from a 2-2 draw
at Joker Wickersley Youth CC - a result that did nothing for Joker's
chance of a top two finish. Adam Daughtrey and Nathan Taylor netted for
Joker, but George Rudd and Harry Spooner strikes earned Pheasant their
point.
